If you wear these I know you're deeply appreciatively of "high quality" audio

  • -2

I don't get the hate for the audio quality of Beats headphones. Granted I've only tried the most expensive model, but they were the most impressive sounding headphones I've tried. The bass was incredible… Probably not accurate or whatever audiophiles would complain about, but they sound like what I like to hear when I listen to music and play games

better things can be had for less, Ozbargainers go value for money not pimp ma ears

      • -7

Bose is better and Sennheiser is at least as good.

        • There's plenty that are even better than that.
And for a much better cost to performance ratio.

      • +11

I set myself $300 to spend on headphones and Beats didn't cross my mind. It's like buying a Louis Vuitton bag, the cost of the brand outweighs the practicality of it.
Take a look at some respected audio brands like Shure or Klipsch.

        • OT, but esp compared to other luxury brands (Burberry, Prada, Dior etc), LV is solid value. The bags and wallets they make are rock solid quality and pretty practical/durable.

        • I just used that as an example. I have no idea what the quality of 'luxury' brands are.

        audio technica ath-m50
        Sony MDR XB500/XB700
        Alessandro MS-1
**I'm sure there are others that can be added to the list, but the ones above the line can be had for less than the price of the Beats

**The Ones below are a tiny bit more expensive than the Beats and may require an amp. Personally the DT 770 with a Fiio E7 is the best of the lot.

        AKG K701
        DT 770
        Ultrasones PRO 750

        • Ath-m50 IMO is by far better then the beats

        • I have just received an Audio Technica ATH-WS55i in lieu of Beats Solo (non HD) from Coke Unleashed redemption (bundled with HTC Sensation XL), has anyone ever used that AT headphones? Any good?

        • i can vouch for ATH-M50…marvellous headphones! reviews online will back this up

        • I also just received Audio Technica ATH-WS55i in lieu of Beats Solo from Coke Unleashed redemption (bundled with HTC Sensation XL), see review below: http://sigalonmac.soup.io/post/167942805/Audio-Technica-Soli…

They are probably better than Beats Solo but are cheaper and not as well known, which is not good for me as I was going to sell the Beats.

        • Thanks billy_bob for the review

      • +6

Ah yes… The "If criticise it, they obviously can't afford it unlike ME!" mentality, almost like you believe money sunk: value/quality, is a linear scale. This is a thought train which is so mind-bogglingly juvenile I'm still not sure if you're trolling.

          welcome to my world…

What other headphones have you tried?

      • I haven't gone to a headphone specialist store or anything, but I did the rounds of JB, Harvey Norman and the like and didn't hear anything comparable to the beats as far as the tightness and "kick-y-ness" of the bass went. I actually ended up buying a pair of Razor Electra headphones due to reviews that said they were really bass heavy, thinking that that's what I must like, but they were absolutely awful. The bass was so overwhelming that it seemed to make the whole sound sound like mud. I took them back and ended up getting some Plantronics GameCom 367s which just get the job done without being anything special.

        • if you like bass, try the sony XB700.

here's a video of the headphones in action http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHqsn8Qme_s

        • With all due respect, that doesn't mean anything.

The headphones on display at non-specialty stores tend to be all low quality, consumer oriented entry level stuff (albeit sold above entry level prices), 'my first aftermarket headphone' for the legions of Apple earbud owners that probably aren't well versed in audio. Not too hard to see the $500 Beats leading the pack in that instance, especially when most of the other cans are under $150 (after the JB/HN markup).

I haven't properly listened to the more expensive Beats Studio (which is generally considered to have $100-150 while costing $500) but I have tried the Solo, which is irredeemably terrible for the price, or even half the price. The $70 Creative Aurvana Live! sounded better in every way and doesn't make you look like a wanker.

Your reaction is justified since most people will be floored when they hear their first decent $100 headphone but if you want to have an informed opinion, walk into a proper store and see what happens. Or find someone with a decent set nice enough to give you an audition.

The bass was incredible… Probably not accurate or whatever audiophiles would complain about,

Dre's are heavy on the bass…. and crap on everything else.

They're good, if not excellent for your R&B and pop music, but try and play some rock/ pop / classical music on it and you'll notice how muddy the sound is.

      • Thanks, I actually didn't get to try them on much of a range of music.

When I was at JBHIFI some months ago I was comparing the Beats with a few of the other demo display models they had out and a pair of $70 Skullcandy Hesh's had much better bass than all 3 Beats they had on display (Pro's, Studios and Solo HD's).

Beats aren't even good for bass despite popular belief. They're just 100% aesthetics.

    • i tried on the studio headphones before these things became 'cool' and was impressed to the point that i wanted to buy them. id be embarrased to wear them in public though, i like discreet things

  • +7

    Sennheiser… that is all.

  • +7

Yeah, I can see how these are actually decent looking headphones, especially when you are out and about. But, even at $199 these headphones are substantially overpriced. You're really just paying for the 'Dr.Dre Tag'

  • +1

if the Solo was $99 and the Studio was $150, then maybe they'd be worth it, i'd grab a pair for DJing, but at this price, even vastly reduced…. urgh.

Would rather grab a pair of Aiaiai TMA-1s, AT M50s etc etc

    • +9

Please don't DJ with a pair of Beats, it just gives the image that you have no idea what you are doing.

      • +1

        Skrillex does :p

But nah, I was just saying, because of the bass heavy sound signature they seem like they could be a good DJ can…. still nothing on the TMA-1s and HD25s and other dj headphones but yea :p

      • +2

I was actually looking for that one but I couldn't find it so I just made my own lol.

Has me racking my brain trying to remember the actual dialogue from that scene.

  • dealextreme up untill about 4 weeks ago….
thats all i'm going to say

    • Still on dhgate/aliexpress/etc. $60-80 for a pair of knock offs is a bit rich though.

  • It's easy to spot posers against real dj's when you see them wearing these or HD25's.

  • ill buy when it goes under 100

  • If your in Sydney City you can walk in and try out the headphones for yourself. JB Hi Fi has them on display near Town Hall. In my opinion you can have better headphones for that price. Also you can walk into JB Hi Fi in Westfields and compare it to most of the Sennheiser range. I'd like to add that I didn't know what good sound was untill I bought myself Triple fi 10's for around $200 in ebay along time ago.. Just my 2 cents.

    • True but IEMs /= Headphones
Some people don't like sticking bits of plastic inside their ears, headphones are the only way to go for them.

    • Go to Audio-Technica Lounge at Westfields Sydney and try the ATH-M50's you can get a price match with headphones.com.au for $160. They absolutely shit on these.

  • -4

to be fair though, these headphones look sexy (even if the audio quality is terrible).

Anyone know of a pair of headphones with a great looking design but also decent audio quality?

  • when i was buying my headphones (noise cancelling),
I looked into the beats, bose qc15,b&w and sennheiser pxc350.
for me the b&w was definitely the most attractive pair

    http://www.bowers-wilkins.com/Headphones/Headphones/P5/Overv…

however i ended up getting the bose for better comfort and amazing noise cancelling =) and also best sounding

  • Don't get a Solo not only they sound weird but also they easy to break. I have a beats pro, they make it rock solid quality but it doesn't sound like a $600 product. I mean you pay the extra money for the design but honestly I am not so regret. However if you want me to buy a Solo, I will say no!

  • +1

pay less and get more for other brands. its strange why people think a rapper endorsement is related to audio technology?

  • Expired? The price seems to have gone back up.
