frustrating, I've found their 'free shipping' is only certain warehouse/product combinations. Also they add GST at checkout, but that's perfectly understandable.

No I am saying that on one screen a item says free shipping but when you get to the cart it will not allow the free shipping but instead selects a paid version.
I don’t mind paying for shipping but I want to compare the price of product and shipping to work out who has best deal. But 80% of the items will come up more more expensive then what it was when added to cart.

Edit: Managed to work out your problem. You have changed the currency to AUD. You need to leave it as US exactly like the link. It will charge shipping if you change your currency. No need to change it, it will convert for you anyways. Cainiao Super Economy Global is not available with AUD selected, only Standard AliExpress.

ahhhhhhhh thanks! I've been suffering this issue of free shipping (on item page) changing to ~AUD$5 shipping (only visible once at the cart) for the past couple of months and couldn't work out what was happening! I just kept trying different sellers until one of them remained with free shipping.

Nope I was logged in. It’s something that changed in last few months but not sure why. If you try to change shipping to the free one in the cart it just ignores it and selects the next one in the list.
Only thing we have worked out is that it affects me and my friends that use AliExpress a lot. People like my mum still get free shipping with the same item.
Also the cost of the actual product can change. Add a $2 item and look at the cart and suddenly it’s a $8 item. I almost paid $18 for some chopsticks the other day because of this tactic.
Just double check that when paying that the price is still valid in the cart.

I changed quantity to 2, then it was $5.19 shipping (more than the cost of the product).
So I changed quantity back to 1, then it was $4.76 shipping.
Then I refreshed the page and back to free shipping.
In the end, I placed 2 separate orders for quantity of 1 in each order to get the free shipping.
This is stupid.
If AliExpress website is faulty, please fix it.
If AliExpress are doing this deliberately, I will stop buying.
