Best Way to Hang Heavy Items on Walls

We need to hang a heavy mirror (probably 7 kg? Not sure) to our wall. I hate to have holes on my wall tho so just wondering if any ideas for the alternatives? I was told by a removalist that there's some sticky /3M thingy which can hold up to 80kgs without making a hole? Not sure if he bs me coz he said he forgot what brand or product. Lol. If anyone can tip me, that would be awesome. Thanks

    • Thanks but I'm a bit nervous hanging a big mirror with sticky tapes haha. And it will damage the paint I reckon if it's left for a long time? Thanks

      • It won't damage the paint, but I would be nervous too if it's 7KG. Maybe not ideal solution. Just answering your "does this really exist" query.

      • If you don't want holes and you don't want stick on exactly what are you envisioning as a solution?

The 3M strips are excellent IMO though I do advise replacing them every 3 years or so. Not because they let go but because I've found when you pull the tab to remove them it often gives way rather than coming off as a single piece. I've never had one damage paint though I wouldn't say it's impossible. A pair of the large strips is supposed to hold 7kg, that's your mirror, but you can use as many as you want. Use 3 pair or as many as you can fit.

Or take the easy route and use a screw/nail/hook and patch it next time you paint if you don't intend to hang in the same spot.

          Sky hooks?

          • @pjetson: You could use sky hooks but I think they would need to be balanced with a long weight.

@pjetson: The band? Seems excessive to have people standing around holding mirrors and pictures.

            • @apsilon: They are getting on a bit. I doubt they'd have the strength to sustain it for very long.

Even if you get a 3M sticky thingy, the weight will be limited by the surface material of the wall. As example, if you're trying to stick onto wall paper or old wall paint, the 3M and mirror could still fall by simply ripping off the wall paper and paint.

Check YouTube on how to find a wall stud and anchor the heavy item to that.

    • This - no paint or wall covering is going to hold the 80kg - the strips might hold to the paint, but the paint aint gonna hold to the plaster.
Holes in your wall are easily covered with spakfilla and a bit of sanding when you don't need them anymore (if we are tralking about a brick wall?).

We had hung a couple of largish paintings with the 3M thingies. Made sure we used ones appropriate for the weight of the painting.
Worked well for a few years and then heard a crash in the night - one painting had come off and hit the floor, broke the frame.
Not too long after the other painting started to come loose.

So I would suggest, if you are going to use the 3Ms that you replace them reasonably regularly.
But for me, for large things, especially mirrors, I now stick with hooks you can hammer in.

  • I would probably not trust sticky tapes for a mirror. I have used the 3M product on my picture frames. For a large picture frame, I used 6 of them. The picture frame will still fall onto the floor sometimes, maybe 3 times in the last 5 years, not sure if it is due to the wind or the expansion and contraction of the walls in cold and hot weather.

My advice would be to bite the bullet and use an anchor, otherwise this will end in tears, eventually.

Swore off the basic 3M command strips after one frame fell during a hot summer day, smashing the frame. The print was fine but the frame was $350 (wife overpaid for it) and was totally unrepairable.

I hate to have holes on my wall

Why? The hook or nail will be in it so you won't see it. It will also be behind a mirror.

Do you not want holes because you are renting?

I wouldn't hang 7kg off a sticky mount unless you are prepared for it to fall at some stage.

  • I have 3 mirrors on a wall, stuck with command strips, mirrors are 10kgs, 5 command strips, been a year so far and so far no issues.

  • Just use more 3m command strips than recommended, and you're good (assuming, as some have mentioned, your wall/paint can handle the weight). For 7 kg I'd use maybe the number of strips required for 20kg, just for redundancy and peace of mind.

I also hate making holes in walls, seems so old-fashioned and inflexible. 3M Command strips (sticky, wet-area and locking types) hold up everything on our walls.

Are you thinking of changing mirrors anytime soon?

Drill the holes, put in proper hooks, let the next occupant worry about how the holes look.

  • Have you bought this mirror already? Is it more of a functional mirror (e.g. in bedroom for getting ready) or more for aesthetics and decoration (e.g. large fancy, intricate mirror for living room décor)?

If it's a mirror you need for just functional purposes to get ready in the morning, you might want to consider those acrylic stick on mirror sheets (not real mirrors but they are super reflective) instead.

If it's an actual mirror definitely do not recommend just using 3M especially for something that will shatter.

  • To install our bathroom mirror, I used Scotch 3M mirror mounting tape and Parfix 300g Clear All Purpose Silicone.
I followed this website on how best to apply the silicone: https://glassshop.com.au/how-to-install-a-mirror-safely/
