OzBargain Website Slight Redesign - October 2021

So I log on this morning for my daily ritual of seeing if there was any crazy freebie I missed or if there was anything else I don't need which I might FOMO into and I noticed there is a slight aesthetic change on the website.

  • / - icons are slightly differently coloured, the numbers are slightly more grey and there is a checkbox for hiding expire deals. There's probably more but this is just what I noticed briefly.

What do we all think about the changes?

Comments

  • When I click on the forums heading, I don’t get the drop down for ‘new’ or anything else. So now I have to click on forums, then it loads and I have to click the ‘new’ button. I don’t like it,

    • click on the forums heading

Clicking on the Forums heading brings you to the All forums page — it has always been the case.

Actually nothing has changed with the menu. "New" button — you mean to create a new forum post? It has always been there as well?

      • I am almost certain I could click on forums and there was a drop down to select new to see new forums.

        • +1

Still there for me, under ‘all discussion’ there is ‘new discussions’

          • @morse: I’m not sure how to explain what I mean.
In the orange banner, I want to click on forums, and it have a drop down that lists new, hot, etc.
I am sure it had it before but I may be making it up because nobody else knows what I am on about.

            • +2

@loulou1: Yeah, I know what you mean and it’s still there for me…

            • +3

@loulou1: It still works the same, just tap the arrow.

        • I still have that I think. Pressing the arrow on the left gets this https://i.imgur.com/rrCOZDs.png

  • Instead of "Slight Redesign", it's just recolouring the vote buttons so they look more consistent on dark mode, that's all. Most other changes that got pushed out this morning are functionality & bug fixes. Copying from our changelog:

    • Fixed: Mod tag missing when loading comments from API
    • Fixed: Exception when trying to add a non-existing tag to block list
    • New: Desktop sticky ads A/B testing for guest users
    • New: Update vote button colours to fit with dark mode
    • New: Referral block shows current user's last click / click count
    • New: Confirmation checkbox for user deactivation page and instructions for reactivation on user registration page
    • New: "No Expired" checkbox for new deals and new freebies page.

And a new thread just to discuss "slight aesthetic change" to the website? I guess that's the other extreme to those who want a major refresh.

    • +4

Hide expired deals is great for those with strong FOMO anxiety

    • Sorry for missing the changelog! I wasn't trying to start anything. I enjoy the aesthetic changes and think it looks neat and modern.

I'm not keen on a major refresh haha I just like hearing what the community thinks. And then for 1 person to say that these new changes are the worst thing since the black plague and they will boycott the website (and for everyone to call them dramatic)

    • Very impressed with upgrade for premium/platinum user interface. Makes the subscription worthwhile just for the fantastic UI.

    • Everything now on light mode just looks 'washed out', can there not be some sort of toggle which changes more than just the background colours?

    • The margins are also smaller too, I noticed which you have not mentioned….

  • +12

I don't like that the comments are missing the word "votes"

    • +3

      They’re not?

      • +12

It just has +/- and number. Used to say votes too.

I noticed something off this morning. Took a minute to realise.

        • +1

Oh! I thought you meant the word “votes” underneath the comment was gone (next to reply, etc). I stand corrected.

    • I prefer it, that part looks cleaner with less clutter, to me

      • Yep its cleaner and better.
I'm just so used to seeing votes it just feels weird.

  • +18

Colour palette is a bit pale. E.g. comments votes.

    Caused by daylight saving.

    • +4

Yes, contrast is wrong, too pale on light mode

    • +1

yes, I felt the same, better if we can change it to black or so

    • +1

Its definitely clear for dark mode, but ozbargain seems a bit jarring with the black/orange look, so I've always used it in normal mode.

    • Colour palette is a bit pale.

I thought someone was fiddling with my monitor so I sent my kids to their rooms until one of them confessed

  • +13

    SCOTTY I DON'T LIKE CHANGE

    • That's not true.

Not if you win a $10M lotto price, or you can give it to me to save you from change :)

  • +1

Definitely not a fan of the faded writing in the comments and upvotes, a little harder to read on white backgrounds. Thought my screen's contrast had problems. Maybe it will grow on me though.

  • +9

Eh, I like the old colour of the vote buttons more. Easier to see.

it's just recolouring the vote buttons so they look more consistent on dark mode, that's all.

I use dark mode, I didn't notice the inconsistency. Looked perfectly fine to me.

    • i was wondering what looked different with the voting buttons

    • +1

Agree, I tend to skip to the comments that either have a lot of positive votes or are negged into oblivion, it now makes them harder to see.

  • +1

Could the "Hide expired deals" checkbox be moved to the Settings page?

    • I like it where it is, you can quickly turn it on and off without needing to go into the settings

  • +4

Yeah, the contrast of the new vote buttons definitely looks wrong on light mode. I appreciate the change is to make dark mode nicer, but it’s a step backwards on light mode.

I like how the comments just say the number next to them now to mark upvotes, though!

I feel this thread is a great example of where beggars can be choosers

  • +1

    Too pale

  • +2

I thought my monitor was dying when I first went on the website. Put it back.

    • +1

Me too! I thought my screen was broken, it looks very odd

    • +1

Someone needs to calibrate their monitor. This is atrocious.

  • +1

I’m not a fan but I guess I’ll adjust to it. Don’t need to fix what isn’t broke IMO, I used the dark mode for a bit but reverted back as it wasn’t very pleasing to look at.

    • Really? I can't stand the light mode, used it at first, but I much rather would use dark mode. Easier on the eyes for me.

      • I haven’t tried dark mode in a while but when I did (I think soon after it was implemented) I thought it looked kind of low budget and quickly strewn together. I do prefer dark mode in general but not on here.

After testing on mobile it actually looks decent now. Will have to try on desktop sometime.

        • I'm on desktop now, I think it looks equally good on both. What about it before made it look low budget and hastily put together? I haven't been on the site a whole long time, it's been the same dark mode for me since I first joined.

          • +1

@CrispyChrispy: I think it's been updated. The colour scheme and contrast for dark mode previously was not as pleasing, if I recall correctly the background was just a dark black, which is too dark IMO for dark modes. Others appear to have agreed when it was rolled out.

            • @Ghost47: If I recall correctly, when that forum post you linked was posted,(was just a month or so ago), the background was the same shade of blackness? I commented on that post the time it was released about how the colour scheme looked fine to me.

But yeah, I agree with you on the having a too dark of a black background and how it's too dark for dark modes. Reddit has a similar thing with their mobile app, where's there Night mode (a lighter black) and Midnight (the dark, full black).

              • @CrispyChrispy: I don’t think it was the same, I checked on desktop and the shade of black now is somewhat lighter than I remember. Who knows though maybe I’m wrong, but if I didn’t mind the dark mode I don’t think I would have reverted back to light mode.

  • +8

I don't like the faded text and the new green used for the upvote count that also feels faded.

  • Couldn't the comment count be a different colour in light vs dark mode? The grey is fine in dark mode, but NOT good in light mode. It would really benefit from being black again for light mode.

  • +5

The faded voting colours (green) especially hurts my eyes, terrible idea!

  • +5

Not a fan of the faded green, makes me feel like I'm going blind. Perhaps an outline on the numbers may help I dunno

    • Ozbargain HQ has air conditioning so doesn't need fans anymore

  • Not crazy about the grey vote numbers also. Just not very pleasant on the eyes.

  • -2

I've noticed OzB works a bit like the Government, quick to push through unwanted ideas, and takes forever to fix issues on stuff that wasn't broken in the first place.

Incredible effort guys keep up the slow work!
