I think it is a good price for a laptop with a 3060. Quick google search and you can find it for 200 more in other stores, so still good savings.

any good prices on a time machine?
      hahah.jkz.

    • Unfortunately international shipping cost are going up, you can't even ship to multiple Asian country via eParcel
Compounded with a bit of inflation in the US, and energy shortages in multiple countries.

This will add to the price of things unfortunately.

  • not bad

Honestly I know they're not as powerful, but these are getting mighty tempting with the price of normal PC's these days.

    • Not PC, just the GPU.

Did you know that around his mates he used to be known as Harvey "grift guy" Norman. Hey grifty chuck me a beer… they would say. And he's all like that'll be $5 even though we are best friends for life.

Did you know Harvey and Norman are two different people

Did you know I saw Harvey at a Woolies on the Gold Coast yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything. He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?” I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Caramello Koalas in his hands without paying.

The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Excuse me Normdawg, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.

When she took one of the choccies and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

I met Gerry about 2-3 years ago. I got roped into watching my 3 month old niece while my sister got her hair done. So there I am, sitting in the waiting area of a hair salon with my niece, and who walks in but Gerry himself.

I was nervous as shit, and just kept looking at him as he played Agar.io on his phone and waited, but was too scared to say anything to him. Pretty soon my niece started crying, and I'm trying to quiet her down because I didn't want her to bother Gerry, but she wouldn't stop. Pretty soon Gerry gets up and walks over. He started running his hands through her hair and asked what was wrong. I replied that she was probably hungry or something. So Gerry put down his phone, picked up my niece and lifted his shirt. He breast fed her right there in the middle of the hair salon. Chill guy, really nice about it.

Na base M1 MacBook Air smashing this all day

    • +10

To bad the M1 won’t run most the games I currently play haha. M1 is fine for Blizzard games or mainstream pvp games that have been ported to ARM.

Also have to be conscious that you’re unlikely to get >60hz output working easily with the M1

      • Shh let the isheep enjoy their overpriced pretty things.

    • Yeah might be faster but different market and role.

    • +3

I went from the Macbook Air M1 8 core GPU to the i7/16GB of RAM version of this.

Is the M1 snappier? At times yes. Does it have good games support? Hell no.

  • This little unit has pretty much replaced my 1600x/ 2070s

Chuck in another stick of ram and you'll be laughing.

The only issue is the lack of thunderbolt and the HDMI (I think) doesn't output 144hz externally.

    • yeah. I have this one, added 16GB 3200 RAM stick and it's a 1080p gaming destroyer.

    • This laptop has Thunderbolt.

      • +1

I don't think it does. it has USB-C but no Thunderbolt

        • Oh I thought I had read that it had Thunderbolt.

      • Can confirm. No Thunderbolt or display port.

        I own the i7 version.

    • was looking at benchmarks and 2070 still appears the better card. So 3060 is faster?

      • +2

"The performance depends on the TGP setting and cooling of the laptop. On average it should be similar to the older GeForce RTX 2070 Super Mobile and therefore best suited for QHD gaming (very demanding games)."

        https://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-RTX-3060-Mobile…

2070 is older architecture and 12nm process. 3060 is 8nm process and new architecture. out with the old and in with the new!

        • cheers for that

        • +2

This is a low-mid TDP RTX 3060, I checked a a few 3D mark scores for low TDP 2070s ~80w and they were about 10% higher than the scores for this acer configuration. The 2gb of ram extra in the 2070s will make a differrence, particularly at higher resolutions

          • @Lukas: correct me if I'm wrong, but 3060 has TGP range of 60-115w

are you sure that 95w is mid-low TGP in that range? much closer to the top than the bottom

if you add a well cooled beefy 15" Clevo design with full power 2070 super to the comparison, it punches around 15% higher than this laptop in graphic tests

but it also needs a 650g 230w power supply to achieve that, and the surface of the laptop hits 65 degrees at peak performance

for a gaming laptop this nitro 5 is slim and well balanced thanks to 3060 improved process and power efficiency, which means more fps per watt. I wouldn't buy 2070s even if it was same price.

            • @shabaka: I had said the 2070 was 80w, so it would be a thin an light laptop I was comparing with, obiously much more expensive due to being a thin and light and premium + branded range though. At 115w a 3060 mobile would easily beat most 2070s chips.

              3DMark 11 - 1280x720 Performance GPU

              Acer Aspire Nitro 5 AN515-55-57GF - 24476 Points (85w stock)
              Razer Blade 15 RTX 2070 Super Max-Q - 28678 Points (80w)
              NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Super Max-Q - 27104 Points

              https://www.notebookcheck.net/Razer-Blade-15-GeForce-RTX-207…

OP went from a 8gb 2070s desktop to 6gb 3060 mobile though, I have no idea how he is getting nearly the same performance. I went from a 970 desktop system to 1060 6gb mobile and my 1440p gaming and multitasking performance took pretty big hits, mainly due to lack of thermal headroom. Tried a 4gb 3050 gtx laptop recently and it couldnt keep up with the ageing 1060 6gb mobile. If your use case is purely gaming though I can see how you may not see differences though.

    • That's because it's good as a portable PC.

It's not good at being a laptop tho (Sub-par build quality, VERY small battery…)

      • build quality is actually better than I expected

I owned the nitro 5 with 8th gen Intel 8300H and design was flimsy AF. low quality plastic, everything creaking, keyboard was shite

this generation pleasantly surprised me. much better plastic, very solid build, pleasant to the touch, and no creaking. very usable keyboard

I get 2h from it on "better battery" power setting l, and I charge it to 80% only since most of the time it's plugged in, to reduce battery wear

so not too bad. the 17" Clevo monster I had before that used to die within an hour flat.

        • Fair enough. To be honest I was judging this generation of Nitro based on the previous one which you had. I remember it being terrible and even the ones before that were bad. Didn't except Acer to actually make a change as it seemed to be the way they cut costs on these laptops and sold them 'cheaper' than other laptops.

2 hours is meh. It just proves my point. My G14 is equally powerful yet still manages 10 hours battery life. At the same time tho, it's more expensive, however just shows the difference when you pay extra for a laptop. The G14 is smaller, lighter, more powerful CPU, Ultrabook battery life and the build quality is awesome!! - feels so rigid

          • @Zackeroo: yah, I am definitely not saying 2h is good, but good enough for me

nothing compared to my Dell that I had before that. 97wh battery and easily 10h

but you can't have it all, though

14" is def too small for me, I feel like they are too cramped, and everything smaller is just plain unusable - for me

I considered getting G14 but that stopped me in my tracks. too small

portable PC is exactly what I want. for portable experience I got the Lenovo Duet, it's a bit slow but perfect to write a few emails, take notes on the go, watch movies on a train etc. and it lasts forever

and nitro 5 for everything else which is my home PC replacement

now is a shit time to build PC, so this is a perfect alternative. sold my old gaming rig with a profit, but not keen to build a new one until prices return to sensible levels. until then nitro 5 will tide me over just fine

I tried for years to get one device to rule them all, but I just can't. portable devices feel cramped and overheat. also not immersive enough for gaming. larger devices are not comfortable to haul around and don't last long

so I gave up and split into 2 devices, and now I am happy as. also, cheaper in the long run! as devices that sort of excel at everything cost $$$$, while if I get 2 good devices that get only some things right, the 2 together cost less

            each to their own though

          • @Zackeroo: What gpu? Thatll drain the most power tbb

            • +1

@FrozenFred: RTX 3060. The laptop has the ability to switch over to iGPU when you're using it as a normal laptop. It then becomes like any other portable laptop, except when you want it to perform, you just switch over to dGPU, plug in an adaptor and it's a full on PC.

And yea I agree, the laptop can get about 2-3 hours of gaming if you're using it off power, but there's really no point doing that. I bought this laptop to replace my gaming PC while simultaneously having a lightweight laptop for uni with good battery life.

              Twas' an excellent choice imo

              • @Zackeroo: Yeah sweet! Yeah been wondering if i should do the same, especially when gpu alone is the price of a whole laptop!

  • Any idea how many watts this RTX3060 is?

    • 85 Watts, there is a bios update for 95W but the power brick is only 130 Watts if I’m not mistake.

      • 95w isnt too bad, a 130w power brick seems too small however?

        • +1

that i5 is 45w so doubt its 130, in any case i think you're right about 95w so thats not too bad at all

      • +2

180w power brick. BIOS does indeed increase to 95w. I have this model and can confirm.

      • +1

        Power brick is 180w

    • 95w for 3060 in this model. I have one

      power brick is 180w.

in demanding titles (Control maxed out DX12 with ray tracing to the max) graphics does reach 95w, CPU is powerful enough to feed it

      very capable device.

got mine from Acer directly, refurb, for $1149 a few weeks back. but it hasn't been this price since then, latest was $1299 last weekend, and it was scooped very quickly.

$1400 is a bit much for it I would say. on Acer refurb you could pick up a 3070 Helios 300 for $1900 couple weeks back (disappeared quickly).

      • +1

Do you still check on reburbished acer regularly even though you already got one for $1,149?

        • +2

yeah I do, to keep my fellow Ozbargainer up to date on latest price drops

why would I let someone spend $1400 when I bought for $1149

but who knows, maybe I made them so popular that they're not going to drop prices like that again?

          • @shabaka: I saw 2060 at 1199 last weekend. 10th gen i5 8GB. Was thinking about your $1149 for 3060, i didnt end up getting the 2060. haha..

            • @Succulent: yeah.. sometimes I think it might have been a one off? just like the 11th gen version at Bing Lee

but yeah, keep checking, they add stock occasionally, and prices reduce on weekends

              • @shabaka: 3 months ago, HN had nitro 5 2060 at $998. Waiting for this to happen again, which is a wishful thinking..

                • @Succulent: that sounds like a great deal

                  hopefully there's more to come

            • @Succulent: $1349 for the 3060 this weekend

              • @shabaka: Yep saw that thanks. I am not in the rush so happy to wait for them to drop further haha..

                • @Succulent: I bought mine at $1299 two weeks ago. Tbh I dun think the price will drop to $1149 again.

  • +2

Waiting for it to go below $1000…

black Friday maybe? currently the only thing you can get under $1k is 1650

with 3050 and 3050 ti firmly sitting between 1650 and 3060 it's gonna be a bit of wait to see this below $1k

  • +2

I got i5-11400H version from Bing Lee for $1279 and it's awesome. Better wait till the black friday sale.

    • +1

yeah lucky you! I missed out on that one. but I got 10300H version for $1149 so not too shabby either. having 11th gen CPU would have been a cherry on top, but I can live with 10th gen, too

Why are all the laptop deals on ozbargain so sh*t?

  • Is this a better laptop. Five years ago I always had problems with acer laptop and returned twice. Have they improved in recent years

    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/hp-omen-15-6-full-hd-gami…

  • Great laptop. Nitros are fantastic bang for buck.

  • Compared to other laptop brands that have the same GPU I think it’s alright, but, as understand things Acer have a lower power supply so the benchmarks for the 3060 might not be accurate.

That being said, as far as I know the Lenovo Legion has the max rated power but it is significantly more expensive.

I was looking at these laptops too, and I think they’re good value, but that’s just maybe something to be aware of.

    • +1

It works out in its favour.

Less power means less heat. The Legion throttles itself while the Nitro seems to deal with heat better and continues at full clock speeds.

Compared side by side with a mate.

      • Ah fair enough. That makes sense. Thanks for the reply :)

  • Can we play BF 2042 with this?

Looking for new laptop > Hating Harvey Norman > Hear that Gerry has given the money back now > Use this to justify buying > Check the reviews > See first review mentions it was a great buy for 1298 > go back to hating Harvey Norman

    • didnt he only give back 6 million of the 22 million? Soi think anyone who was overpaid or had a robodebt should only have to pay back 30% or only pay 30% of the retail price of any goods purchased at HN

      • +1

That does look to be correct! Back to double hating Harvey Norman, hah.

I'm just your average lefty weirdo, so I don't believe the government should be chasing people for any of the jobseeker debt, but should be sending the army after jobkeeper debt.

  • +2

I have this from the previous deal. I've previously had the Dell G3. Build quality wise I can recommend this- Nitro feels lighter and also performs much quieter. Cpu and GPU temps are pretty good. Extra 8gb ram for dual core is a MUST. Gaming is very decent, can do >60fps on ultra on new single player titles. Stacks well with other more expensive rtx laptops. I do sort of wish I had a desktop but when covid restrictions ease, I do plan to go to a lot of LAN's with mates
