Welcome to OzBargain Test Centre Advice Desk

should I call the test center and ask them

That should be the first thing to do.

  • +1

    whats PTE?

    • Think it’s some English test

      • +4

        Obviously failed the test.

        • Surprisingly used "advice" correctly though.

          • +3

@brendanm: Followed by "center" (US spelling on OzBargain). And why is Frank "with holding" his result?

          • -3

@brendanm: Am not that uneducated. I may make mistake in that first post because of tension and anxiety but check my other discussions.Saying I used ' Advice' correctly is an insult to me.I write and speak English very well.

            • +3

@Oluchi: It's a joke champ. For some reason people always use advice and advise in the incorrect way when asking for "advise" on here.

I moved my mask away from covering my nose fully during exam.As a result my result is under investigation. To be Frank, I did not know when this happened.

You may have done this without thinking at the time.

I was told that test center said I moved my mask away from covering my nose fully during exam

So they seems to be suspecting thet you were cheating. I don't think you will be able to book another test until this investigation finishes as they might permanently ban you (just my idea, I don't know anything on this exam).
Try to contact the test centre for advice on next steps.

Alternatively, you can take an IELTS test

I was told that test center said I moved my mask away from covering my nose fully during exam.

They're using the mask as an excuse to fail your test and force you to pay another fee to retake it.

You must wear a face mask at all times during your test appointment. Read more about the use of face masks in our test centers.

    • The official uses “center” spelling as well!

I teach and mark PTE exams. Based on the grammar, language and errors in this forum post alone, you should expect to resit the exam. The mask issue, at this point, is likely inconsequential.

    • +8

I was trying to think of a polite way to say their English sucked, but you've done better than I could.

      • +2

Look PTE is a tough exam. Even tougher if you are unable to use punctuation correctly.

        • -7

Thank you. I beseech you not to judge me yet. This was written in a tensed state , after I called PTE costumer. I know my grammar and punctuations.

          • +5

@Oluchi: Just a note that the phrase would be "in a tense state" since tense is already an adjective. Also, the word beseech hasn't been popular since the 19th century, unless one's trying to be funny. I can't really help with the word "costumer"? You'll get the hang of it eventually. Wish I could learn a new language properly without going abroad.

            • -2

@peterpeterpumpkin: I like beseech it is quaint. Maybe OP is from India they tend toward a flowery form of speech. Do these tests penalise cultural embellishments?

          • -2

            @Oluchi: Sorry PTE costumer care……

            • +3

              @Oluchi: There’s a difference between a costumer and a customer.

            • @Oluchi:

              costumer care

              ^^
              customer care

Are you trying to be funny by deliberately misspelling the same word twice?

              • @DoctorCalculon: No, this is autocorrect,it's misspells atimes, I wouldn't do that .Thanks for the observation.

        • It's stressful (time pressure), but I literally scored 100% for the 4 main sections and 98% for the 3 or 5 supporting groups. This going back to 2016 I think.

      • +11

Sad thing is, their English is soooo much better than many born and bred Aussies I see on Facebook lol

        • +6

You take stalkerbook as a place to look for good English?

          • +3

@pharkurnell: Don't take it for anything, just an observation ive come across. Have a whinge page and centerlink support group, OP's English skills easily surpass a majority of those Australians. For a 2nd language, this is more than understandable, yet people who only know 1 language can't even use it well.

            • @MeesusEff: Thanks dear.

              • @Oluchi:

                Thanks dear.

Is this an asian thing? It's so annoying

                • +3

@brad1-8tsi: I thought it was a western thing! Older (western) ladies at work used to call me that!

                  • @bobbified:

I thought it was a western thing! Older (western) ladies at work used to call me that!

Yes, my Dad (born 1929) used to call younger women "dear" but that was "of his time" and a respect thing and because he couldn't remember their names.

                • +2

@brad1-8tsi: No, its a condescending thing.

                  • @Jugganautx:

                    No, its a condescending thing.

When I have to correspond with vendors on AliExpress they use it a lot. It drives me nuts.

I assume they are trying to be respectful and non-binary.

                    • @brad1-8tsi: In my culture…We try to show respect or love with the love " dear".

            • @MeesusEff: Thank you

            • @MeesusEff:

Have a whinge page and centerlink support group

Hardly surprising that poor English is on display in those groups. Facebook is full of utter bogans.

              • @brendanm:

Facebook is full of utter bogans.

                More bogans then OzB?

                • @bobbified: In the right groups on there, yes totally more bogans than on here

Though being from north QLD probably amplifies my bogan exposure on there a lot

Please. Everyone knows that Edu businesses were hit hard because of the pandemic.

The company’s 2020 preliminary results revealed that underlying revenue declined 10%, with total sales dropping 12% to £3,397m (2019: £3,869m) and net cash generated from operations falling from £480m in 2019, to £450m in 2020.

Test centre closures contributed to a 22% fall in total testing volumes, despite “strong growth” in Online Proctoring.

Pearson wants to improve their 2021/22 revenue by failing students for trivial matters like touching the face mask.

      • +2

This does nothing to refute the level of English in the OP.

        • Without even seeing the other skills (reading, speaking and listening), I'll ballpark their score (if they receive it), at 55-60 or IELTS equivalent 5/5.5.

          @OP, prove me wrong. ;-)

        • I contacted the pte customer and I was told that test center said I moved my mask away from covering my nose fully during exam. As a result my result is under investigation

OP has stated that Pearson is using the touching of face mask as an excuse to investigate the test.

My former PTE result was R-84 , W- 76, speaking 81 and listening 70.The grammatical errors was because I was tensed and needed urgent advice.I need to meet up with 17th Oct deadline that was given to me by immigration Western Australia else my application will be declined.

      • R-84 , W- 76, speaking 81 and listening 70
I need to meet up with 17th Oct deadline

what are the target marks for each band? you can try computer based IELTS tomorrow and get results within 2 to 5 days

        • There is no computer based ielts in the region where I live in Australia ( Canberra) except i go to Sydney and I can't travel to Sydney because of covid restriction.

    • You can't mark PTE exams, because they are marked by the computer. Are you a bot?

Don't feel too proud teaching your first language. I feel arrogance in your post & feel sorry for your students.

      • I can mark PTE if I work for a test prep company.

Who said English is my first language?

  • +5

Hello and please meet you sorry yuo encounter why this happen and need my help. Test centre have phone you call and they advice and tell. You do today and tell they do.

moved my mask away from covering my nose fully during exam

So, did you have any answers written on the inside of your mask? 😁

(Don't stress - it's still covid so they're not kicking people out of the country yet!)

    • -1

Not at all, i had pneumonia so once in a while , I will experience shortness of breath and open the tip of the mask to get air.I did not even remove my mask.

    Bliss

Not sure if this is OP's name or they were trying to say Bless

    • +4

      To be Frank

Pretty sure OP's name is Frank

    • Lol😂Bliss is my nickname..This my write up has really been scrutinized properly…..

  • +9

@Oluchi —> I feel bad for Bliss, Frank or whatever your name is.

Look mate, if you don't get the result you need, send me a PM and I'll see if I can help you out with some tips/tricks etc for free. I have been teaching IELTS, PTE and other Cambridge exams for over 15 years, should have some useful stuff in my head… I hope!

    • -2

Ok no problem. I will but I wrote this in a tensed state and I did not proofread it before posting it.

      • +2

Hey OP, I gave my PTE last year and helped a couple of my friends to prepare for the test. If you want any tips, feel free to PM me.

  • +2

Thanks i really appreciate all your contributions .I will contact all those that graded me if eventually my result come out not good.English is not my first language anyway …So i am not angry.I am open to correction.

  • +3

I have called the test center demanding why I was reported , the co-ordinator was very apologetic and told me to call him back while he speak with the head office. He called me back and assured me that I will get my result before Friday 17th Oct, that he has resolved the issue.I believed him.I am hoping that the result will come out to be good.Still thankful to everyone.

    • Good luck, hope you passed:)

      • Tx

    • +3

I have called the test center…

Credit where credit is due - OP has done better than a lot of others by actually calling the place!

      Good luck!

    • +1

This is concerning as the next Friday 17th October is not until 2025!

  • tell whomever saw you fiddle with mask that you were hyperventilating and needed air or you would faint make sure you destroyed mask with answers written on inside in case they check

    • I cannot engage in malpractice, I am very disciplined. Meanwhile which time do you have to do malpractice in PTE exam when u have barely 2mins for one question..thanks 4 your advice.

  • To be honest OP English is not bad but his teacher/tutor is probably William Shakespeare or someone who has been out of touch with the contemporary English speaking community. Just like some Japanese Brazilian or Vietnamese Australian speaking the old language that's been out of touch with the mainstream mother tongue.

    • +1

Lol😁….Igacb08 ……You may not be wrong that is why I want to learn from you the current English.Change they said is constant.

  • +1

I hope that in near future, this discussion will offer solution to another person who may find himself in my present position.

  • +5

Wow the hatred shown here to someone who is trying to improve themselves is unbelievable. Yes, their English may not be perfect but they are trying. If you can't help why does it give you satisfaction to laugh?

    • +1

I can't see a single post with hatred. Just posts with peeps having a laugh.

I mean, if I was in OP's position and had an important and urgent issue with a service provider, signing up to an Australian bargain website and posting in the forums probably isn't my first move lol

      • +1

If you are alone in a strange country you may try to get help wherever you can. And OP has obtained useful advice and several offers of help.

        • Exactly..You're right.

        • +1

a lot of people here don't appreciate all the advice and counselling etc ozbargain provides - and we seem to have knowledgeable people on a wide range of subjects - I encounter different groups of people based on the subject matter

      • +1

Lol😁…..I got a useful advice here anyway and I am grateful to everyone for your contributions .Apart from ur numerous advice, I hard a good laugh , I also learn I should be more careful with my grammar, spelling and punctuation while posting any write up….

        • +1

You have made some errors in this comment while saying you should be more careful. I recommend you try Grammarly. I just use the free features and find it very helpful. It would have picked up 90% of the errors you have made in your posts here. I urge you to try it.

          • @Yola: I know, I think auto correct in my phone contributed to it too for example I wrote" I had a good laugh" and it spelt it " I hard a good laugh"….. Meanwhile what is 'free features' . How do I try it?

    • +2

The problem was, the OP was trying to defend the quality of their English rather than take good advice.
But their attitude turned around at the end so I think this was overall a positive and supportive thread with the potential of a good outcome for OP.

      • You 're right dear.

        • +1

I hope you're a grandma, otherwise my title is "mate" :)

  • +1

Please be nice to OP. I had to learn English many years ago and in total have learned 7 languages. English is quite hard and a lot of things do not have rules behind them and just have to be learned by rote. My advice to OP is that he should associate with native English speakers as this will help immensely.

    • I am the only non aussie where i work. When I speak they hear me correctly and I also hear everything they say.I just need to copy their accent ..I am not interested in learning their slangs , once they can understand my simple English. I am very fine.

  • WRYTA, it all relates to WRYTA, then of corse we have to consider WTF it is all about, but not excluding YRAFW, then wait for RTR, but then you may have ground for AOA.

    GL

  • Do you wear glasses. If you did, maybe explain to them that with the mask on, it was fogging up your lenses. Surely, they can’t fail you for that reason.

    • Ok Tx

  • +2

Good day everyone just an update. The result came out yesterday 17th Oct. The scores are writing 66 , reading 70, speaking 67, reading 64.

    Thanks .

  • I did not pass it.I will resit it.
