    • Hi agree as well…. I've got a Mac Mini M1 and with multiple apps open, 20+ chrome tabs and teams meetings, etc… I've never notice any slow down. For 98% of users, 8gb ram with M1 works fantastically.

98%? Where did you pull that number out from? ;p

    • I've did plenty of video editing in the past on a Thinkpad with 8GB of RAM and thought it was adequate. Then, I decided to upgrade the laptop to 16GB since there was a spare memory slot and I was blown away by how much faster videos encoded and how much smoother playback was. Last year I bought a new Thinkpad with Ryzen 7 and 16GB RAM. I can encode in Premiere while watching YouTube or browsing in Chrome without anything slowing down. No way I could do that with 8GB of RAM, as for me Premiere tends to use around 12GB on its own.

My Thinkpad wouldn't be classed as Pro-level, even though the processor in it is faster than the M1 (except single core speed) and it has twice the RAM.

      • Fair enough - however, I was using a 10700 with 32GB of RAM before this, and I can’t really tell THAT much difference between that and the M1 Air with these sort of tasks. Your Thinkpad with 8GB RAM isn’t particularly comparable with the M1 8GB, which is where this debate gets murky really quickly. The optimisation of Mac OS w/ their hardware, and the sheer speed of tasks with everything on a single chip, is remarkable.

Everybody is waiting for m1x. We need more people to buy the old pro otherwise we will have supply issues with m1x next week.

    • You can lead by example.

A $2k laptop with 8gb ram and half a terrabyte ssd you have to laugh, until you see 69 upvotes, so sad.

I was skeptical as well. As someone who used various Windows machines from 64MB through 32GB of RAM, I relate to what you are saying and understand the difference RAM makes to the system and user experience. At work I had to churn through an HP-AMD-16GB, Dell-Intel-16GB this year due to poor performance and now they have given me a Toshiba with 32GB. Still I have restart once in a week.

Also my personal old MBA 2012 4GB was showing slow response, so I had to replace that with a new M1 MBA for my kid, And I have to say I am impressed with the way Mac handles the memory utilisation. The machine has been restarted only 2-3 times in the past 6 months and is blazing fast regardless of the number of apps open and the I/O operations that simultaneously happen.

I guess what Apple says is true - after all, it’s about the cohesive system and how well you couple hardware and software together.

8GB RAM is enough for general usage. However, ideally, 16GB RAM is better if you really want to push M1 to the limit. I recommended a relative to purchase a MBA last year (when that relative had to get a new laptop), the relative picked 16GB RAM model.

While Apple has done a great job with M1, let's not forget Apple's decision to make RAM not upgradable for many years now. There is a tendency for us Apple users to let Apple off the hook with some of their consumer unfriendly practices. I call my Macbook Pro a Donglebook. The price I now have to pay with going with USB-C port based MBPs early: once I get an M1 or M1X device, I will have to buy a new set of dongles if I want to take advantage of change in USB-C/Alt-mode DP 1.4 support. There are a lot of things with USB-C which most people don't know about. Had I knew all that, I would have got a MBP 15 inch previously to avoid this mess. Also, the expensive Apple dongle vs el-cheap dongle decision. Do I trust feeding 61W through an el cheap dongle?

I know that 8GB RAM is enough for M1 feeling. It is quite tempting to get a Mac M1 device and these discount deals are quite tempting. However, there is a reason pro level (the 14 and 16 inch) MBPs start with 16GB.

  • I want an M1 Air. Does the Apple Education store accept Apple gift cards? The ones you can currently get from Coles.

    • Nvm found out by clicking through. They accept up to 8. Now I'm off to look for gift cards!

      • If you add the cards to your apple balance then you can use as many as you want.
