$119 standard price for this. They are garbage. Save up and get a Global knife set instead

Every time these are on ozb people seem to take the bait. The top comments are full of excited buyers/suckers.

  • i checked its website but it does not mention what steel they use….

    VG10 or VGmax?

    • +2

neither, someone on reddit and on other posts here they are HRC52.
Waaaay too soft. You'll need to hone and sharpen often.

      • Get an IKEA sharpener.

        • Ikea?

  • Lots of mixed reviews on these ones. Are they even better than Ikea 365+ knives?

    • I don't think so.

    • If you use a good sharpner, Ikea knives would be better bet. These have odd balance, heavy and slippery from handle. They won't slide through when chopping and slicing.

      • The ikea 3 stages sharpener is good enough.

  • I don't want to be devils advocate, but how good could they be if they're discounted by $200?

    Legitimate question.
If you own this brand of knives please advise.

  • Bought from the last deal and they still have not arrived. Doesn't help that both Myer and AusPost have subpar service. Ridiculous

Ignore the knife snobs, these are great for all but the most extreme amateur chefs. I've got a Global set which has been fantastic for over 20 years now but bought this set last time just for the cleaver which I love, its super sharp.
The other 2 knives are in the camper as I was reluctant to take the globals on the road as nice things tend to disappear from communal kitchens.

    • ignore me, i read ur post wrong…

    • Agreed 100%, we're happy with Furi knives we've bought in the past and especially at this price point, it's a damn good deal imo.

  • Bought the Pro set when this set was OOS during the last deal, haven't tried since I only just received it not long ago (VIC to VIC in transit for over a month).

These knives are reasonably good. They will sharpen up brilliantly but not the greatest edge retention.
Just means you may have to sharpen them a little more often than more expensive/harder metal based knives.
Personally I'd give them about a 7.5-8 out of 10. This is a 'good' deal IMO.
(I'm in the specific industry and not affiliated with the poster of this deal or Myer).

I would put Furi knives on par with Mundial or the higher end Wiltshire or Scanpan knives.
Subnote to all: NEVER buy the cheap Wiltshire or Scanpan knives as they are truly garbage.
OTOH… as per above, the higher end ones are 'ok'.

    • Can you recommend a 9-10 out of 10 brand?

      • +1

Sorry for late response - I'm currently running a busy schedule due to post lockdown matters.

That's a good question and somewhat subjective.
9/10… hmmm. Firstly I'm more the practical type so spending serious amounts of $$$ on say expensive 'Japanese' knives could be suggested but IMX they don't typically hold and edge (given same workloads) much longer than many knives that cost 1/3 the amount. Shun' are very good but I prefer the thinner bladed variety, however with most Japanese knives and indeed others, sharpening them requires above average skills IMO. Some rant that Global knives are great… well… they certainly sharpen up well but I truly believe that if you asked 500 Gbl' knife owners what they thought of the edge retention after having owned for a few years, most would report back with relatively unimpressed opinions. Having said that most people have unrealistic ideas of how long a knife should or could stay sharp for. A $50 Mundial knife will become relatively dull after a few short months given an average workload, but so will most Jap' knives.

Opinions vary widely on knives with many being biased for one reason or another. What I can say is that I have truly seen them all. The good, the bad and the ugly. Again given that I am more the practical type and not a huge believer in spending crazy amounts of $$$ on a knife/knives I believe that the German knives are quite good. Wusthoff' for example. They are not ridiculously expensive but very robust and have very good handles/weights. There are knives with harder metals but if used under the same conditions a more expensive knife will also become pretty much just as dull after a time. Expensive knives 'can' be better, but not by a long shot unless compared to super cheap knives. And it should be remembered that knives with harder metals are also harder to sharpen. Indeed a 'softer' Knife is more practical for the average to 'pro' user because and by virtue of the 'softer' metal, they are easier to 'steel' in between times when they are proffesionaly sharpened.

So… to your question. Perhaps the Wusthoff's or (cheaper budget) Mundials. Globals sharpen up well if you know what you are doing but the edge retention IMO is surprisingly average. Many report that sharpening them is a PITA. Not sure of the spelling but Miessermiester' make a very good knife as do Zwilling'. Yaxell (spelling?) are good, but like so many… too expensive. Victorinox are quite good. Very hard for me personally to give just about any knife a '9/10' but these ones I've mentioned I'd give a good 7-8 out of 10. My standards are high and I'm not sure I'm ready to give virtually 'any' of the thousands of knives I"ve seen a '10' let alone a '9'. Point being many will sharpen up well but most will become dull even with the best of users given a reasonably high workload and within a 2 week to 2 month time frame. It is of course a VERY subjective matter.

This is perhaps why Butchers become somewhat proficient at wielding their 'steels' and sharpen their knives many times a day. Most people, including myself have unreal expectations of how long a 'good' knife 'should stay sharp'. I feel despite mankind's relatively impressive improvement of all things knives, there is still a good amount of room for improvement.

Hope that helps. Please add any additional thoughts you have! :O)

    DO NOT RETAIN SHARPNESS.

sharpened to cut a tomato on a plastic chopping board.

could feel it getting blunter by the slice on a single tomato.

    • -1

Yes, but they're DISCOUNTED A LOT!

As I keep saying, and getting downvoted for, they're no good, irrespective of the supposed RRP.

I'm not really a Global fan, but they're VASTLY better than Furi.

      • +1

furi is too look nice on a counter or the in laws to butcher with when they pretend help. we really should get a shun or two for in the drawer

        • I reckon they have a use with the 2 on each end for home protection .

  • I have a set of Furi knives that I must have bought 25 years ago. I lost the small knife and the bread knife, but still have the large chef's knife and the east/west.

I bought a set of two in the last OzBargain Myer deal - same knife combo, which I was planning to give to my son as he has some interest in cooking and will move out of home (at some time).

I will say that from a distance the old and the new knives bear a resemblance. That is about all. The new knives are nowhere near the quality of the old ones. The feel is entirely different, the workmanship and the weight. Put simply, the new knives are nothing like the quality of the originals.

Out of the box the new ones feel like they are fairly sharp, however I do not understand anybody who says a knife isn't sharp. Any knife / every knife can be sharpened. And every knife has to be sharpened. Some are harder than others and will hold an edge for longer - but even if some people prefer this, others would rather a softer blade. The soft blade will require far more frequent sharpening but it these will be much easier to sharpen than a hard blade. If you see a real butcher in action you'd notice how often they run their steel across the blade to shape the edge.

Having said that, Furi claim that their steel is hardened Japanese and can hold a 17 degree edge. Hmmm. Maybe.

The old ones - for sure.

  • Just received shipping confirmation

    • just got mine as well.

      • Got Myer confirmation still waiting to be able to track from Auspost.

        • check back in a month's time :-P

          • @mmcs: Yeah, I was thinking that too. The joke is that the stores will, probably, be reo0ened before I get this delivered.

            • @try2bhelpful: As predicted. My knives haven’t moved post office facilities since Friday. I doubt I will get them this week.

              • @try2bhelpful: Mine got delivered two days ago, it was stuck in a sorting place fir a week then turned up at the PO near by.

  • Just received notification of delay to my order.

  • OP here. Got mine delivered today, no damage to box. Happy with the purchase for the price.

            • @MrPants: Be happy, you all dodged a bullet

              • @mickeyjuiceman: I don’t understand ?

              • @mickeyjuiceman: For the price they aren’t too bad.

                • @try2bhelpful: I'm not really a Global fan, but they're a massive step up from this (having had both, and now having good knives).

                  • +1

@mickeyjuiceman: Me, I’ve got the WÜSTHOF knives and the Furi, certainly, aren’t as good as those but these seem fine. I haven’t tried the Global ones so I will bow to your superior knowledge.

Personally, I would always say people should buy one or two, really, good knives and look after them. The thing I use most is a good cooks knife and a pair of detachable scissors.

I also think you need to hand wash your knives, dry and put them away ASAP after use. The knife should, also, be washed between cutting chicken and vegetables.

                    • @try2bhelpful: Knives are fine, holding an edge well enough thus far, I dont like the bigger one as I haven't got the hang of how to grip and use it. My other Knives are Shun classics, i'm sure the Shuns will last longer but at this price these are great.

Just the usual ozbargain of expectation of getting Dom Perignon at a spumante budget playing out here in the comments as usual..

                      • @mackaxx: I don’t think that’s fair, for $269 which is what they claim rrp is, Spumante shouldn’t be expected

                      • @mackaxx: Nah, it's the people who've got a clue because they know something about knives being blown off by people without a clue who assume they do, Dunning Kruger style. i.e. actual usual OzBargain behaviour.
