Not sure if it offers anything more than Gab does, but if it more open to free speech than Facebook and Twitter, then that's a good thing imo.

            Wow so much free speech

              • +86

@ozhunter: Do you realise that free speech in the US is only to protect against the government punishing you for what you say, it has nothing to do with Twitter or Facebook who are private companies who can have whatever rules they want for using the service and disallow whoever they want from using their service?

                  • +39

@ozhunter: And best of all….. no one else will see the "right" leaning messages so the majority of the planet will not care anymore. It is perfect as it removes the tripe that the ultra right spout as "fact" from the mainstream. I hope he is very successful in his ventures and that extremism goes away from mainstream social media.

                    • -3

@mlbrooke: I don't think you had to see them on Facebook or Twitter unless you followed someone who makes those messages. Afaik you can still post links between platforms.

@ozhunter: So what have you said thats been censored?

                    • @Vote for Pedro: Nothing really. I don't even get the (profanity) censor in my comments here because swearing isn't part of my everyday vocabulary.

But have seen others claim their posts are removed from social media when it comes to certain topics such as religion, lgbt issues, covid vaccines etc. I wouldn't really expect it to be more than a right-leaning version of Facebook.

What it will be is a pointless echo chamber. Instead of solving the problem it will be nothing more than a place for ultra right groups to stroke each other while banning or piling on any left or central (or for that matter even moderate right) groups.

                        • -1

@gromit: Solves a huge problem. It provides a platform where Facebook or Twitter don't decide what can be said.

                          • +13

@ozhunter: no it doesn't, it will just be a platform that censors on different topics. They have already banned criticism of the platform and posting in caps so they are obviously not against censorship and will be actively practicing it and have already been caught using software without adhering to the licenses. All this will provide is a giant echo chamber for extremists.

I guess that’s the problem. There’s a lot of crying about being censored but without any real examples. Could it be simply that what was censored was offensive/disgusting/abhorrent?

But you're OK with other (ie trumps) people controlling the conversations? It shows that it's not about censorship, but censorship of conversations you agree with.

                            • @dizzle: More social media networks, the better. Better to have multiple platforms to have conversations with multiple entities controlling what can be said than just one or two.

Australian climatic data show that, for the period 1911-1950, the summer rainfall over much of the southern part of the continent was considerably greater than in the previous 30 years and, for the same season, mean daily maximum temperatures in the interior were appreciably lower. A difference in character of the annual variation of atmospheric pressure between these periods also suggests a shift of mean position of the subtropical high-pressure belt.

@ozhunter: I'm curious, do you think left-leaning voices would be allowed on TRUTH? Would talk of UBI get you banned? Would suggestion of social welfare for immigrants be allowed?

                    • +2

@samyall: I think so. I think it would be very similar to Facebook and Twitter but just less censoring of those right-leaning voices or have those "fact-checking" links attached to users' posts.

                      • +30

@ozhunter: The reason they have those fact checking links attached to users' posts is that misinformation gets shared millions of times without people bothering to find out if there's any basis in truth. There's still plenty of misinformation on Facebook because they can't check everything, but sounds like this new platform will just be full of misinformation.

I tried correcting objectively incorrect information shared by people I was Facebook friends with (these were people I knew outside Facebook) and they just cling to it anyway. Ended up just removing them from my life entirely, it was often racist/xenophobic bullshit from people who claim they're not racist/xenophobic. The people who originally posted the content had to have known it was false because it had no basis in fact (e.g. making up false Centrelink benefit amounts). It was clearly meant to direct anger and hatred towards minority groups and gullible racist morons repost without even checking if it's true.

Part of the problem with Trump is he quite regularly initiated posts of this nature.

@Miss B: Like how the lab leak theory was censored, which now turns out to be just as, if not more, viable than other theories about the cause of the pandemic?

@basilv: Can you provide any primary evidence to support that hypothesis?

@twjr: Nobody can. And you know that.

But funny how China has introduced new rules for labs.

Funny how the intermediate host animal to aid in transmission is still unknown.

That it came from a Seafood Wholesale Market (where the majority of species are seafood, not mammals).

or why its spikes binds really well with Humans (perhaps the pategon came from Laos and sent to Wuhan).

or a US intelligence report found that several researchers at China's Wuhan Institute of Virology fell ill in Nov 2019 and had to be hospitalized.

Then of course it gets a little weirder when China bans domestic flights but not international flights.

                              and so on….

Really it comes down to this -
You trust China = Food Market.
You don't trust China = Lab Leak.

Even the NYT admitted 2 weeks ago that there is a strong suggestion that it came from a lab.

Considering how thin skin China seems to be of everything, some people don't trust them.

China itself is pushing the theory that U.S. soldiers brought the virus to Wuhan in October, 2019, during the World Military Games.
Now thats a theory everyone can support!
And I hope you will join me in supporting this theory.

@basilv: Lab Leak theory never censored by anyone and no its not more viable than other theories. Respectable news outlets havent mentioned it much because its a bit dumb.

                    @ozhunter:

Probably a reason why so many here won't like TRUTH Social as it would (hopefully) allow right-leaning people to speak and not be censored on topics that would easily get you banned on other social media.

No, it's great, just deeply hypocritical. In a perfect world, all the scare mongers, conspiracy theorists, paedos, racists, and oddballs who think FACEBOOK is like North Korea, migrate there and it's a win-win for all.

Like the 'bad children' the teacher all put on the same table in the corner, they can safely poison each other in a cosy little echo chamber, while the rest of us can read and have nap time.

And if TRUTH's (lol) apparently hands-off moderation emboldens its users to say what FB wouldn't allow, it means we're going to see some real scumbags say some truly heinous shit and reveal themselves.

                    • @SydStrand: I don't get how this would be different from Parler, except that they might be more protective of their users fomenting Capitol Hill style violence (but hopefully as technically inept)

@Quantumcat: My issue with these big tech companies is that they flip flop in the way they identify themselves whenever it suits them. If they curate their content, they're a media publisher and should be following the same regulations and laws all media companies abide by. If they're a common carrier, then they should be following common carrier rules. Instead they claim they're a common carrier when they curate their own content, banning individuals they don't like (which is fine if they play by a publisher's rules) and when regulations comes after them they cry they're a common carrier when they clearly don't act like one. Pick a side, stop dodging regulations.

ATAGI publishes weekly adverse reactions reports to the vaccines. It’s all in your head. Not actually in the world. How many million dead from Covid (look at excess deaths). How many dead from vaccines? Are you thinking clearly?

If you think ATAGI is lying then does that mean all doctors are lying otherwise wouldn’t they be calling them out? If all doctors are lying then why do they spend 7+ years of education after high school to help people? Why would anybody do that? I’m not sure of your career choice but do you think people become doctors and health care workers to make things up and hurt people. Does that make actually make sense? Why get multiple degrees in order to do that. Just stand on the corner and do it. Do you prefer we close down hospitals and GPs and leave people to their own devices. Home births resulting in higher infant mortality rates, no medicine. Cancer not being detected. Break your arm and it stays broken because no X ray machines or proper casts? Is it really all lies. Is that really what health care is? A big con on people who don’t work there. It must be a sad existence for people who believe these conspiracy theories and misinformation. It must be very lonely and cold if you think the world is against you like that. The world is a warm safe place if you learn to trust authorities and people who want to save lives, increase life expectancy and help people live healthily. Everyone benefits from this but the so called lies just seem to aim to creat division and mistrust.

Why do you think everyone else is wrong and everyone else conspires to lie to you? Why would anyone bother. Trump is typically the person you are afraid of - white, elite, wealthy and a kind of celebrity. Yet you believe his lies over a regular person going about their chosen career path who is trying to help regular people live a healthier life on a daily basis.

Remember trump thought swallowing bleach might help Covid. He’s clearly not a medical authority. He hasn’t spent years learning about this to be an authority on health care. He’s good at getting attention and appearing wealthy. This is what he has spent most of his life doing He also knows how to be controversial to get in the headlines. He’s well practiced at it. He is an expert at this and looking after number 1. He failed to look after the American people and this resulted in so much division, misinformation, mistrust and ultimately deaths because people are too afraid to take a vaccine that could save their life and the only side effect for the vast majority of people is a sore arm and a headache. I accept the vaccines can cause adverse reactions but more people in the USA have now had vaccines than caught Covid and there are less deaths now once people started taking vaccines. If the vaccines were worse than Covid then deaths would have increased once the vaccines were available. You can’t look on an individual level. Vaccines and contagious viruses affect countries and populations of people. So health responses and policies aim to protect the keep the most people safe. That’s what medicine does. All medicine has side effects but the benefits are expected to outweigh the negatives to make their use worthwhile

@EightImmortals: That's a bullshit argument. Freedom of speech has never been unconditional. There are laws against hate speech, libel, or deliberately causing panic, so you can't shout bomb in an airport, claim your lava lamps cure covid, or that your competitor's vaccine makes men bald and impotent. If your FB group of scare mongers contributes to vaccine hesitancy, then that's a public health issue like the above, and can be moderated as such.

He's right. ATAGI publicly discloses covid deaths, and everyone who has a covid jab basically has to read a ToS about potential adverse effects, and is sent a questionnaire afterwards; this doesn't strike me as conspiracy. Conversely, FB dragged its feet by allowing covid misinformation to flourish. How many of these poor bastards died because of, let's call it: 'high social media engagement?' Seemingly all of them.

              @SydStrand:

There are laws against hate speech

              Not in the USA

            • +1

@SydStrand: So you can't read either?

              Great work, keep it up.

@EightImmortals: Lol. Let's go over this point-to-point to clear up any miscommunication you feel might be going on, or don't want to answer.

                1) 'most people get their information from Facebook' - > yes, and that's a bad thing. If people are getting health information from FB, it should be moderated as such, like the TGA does to the health and medicines market

                2) 'there's rampant censorship of vaccine effects!' -> no, a nurse literally walks you through a list of potential adverse effects when you get the shot. One-by-one. Even the 1 in a million ones. ATAGI has also been disclosing deaths, and there's more-and-more data published on adverse effects. Do you think they're still hiding the fact that the vaccine makes you magnetic or a 5G antenna?

                3) 'but the anti-vaxxer groups were harmless!' -> no, FB groups are a huge contributor to vaccine hesitancy. Just look at all the gullible fools who died because they went down a rabbit hole of misinformation. People are legitimately dying from this, and it's not just the primary consumer of this crap, it's also their friends and family, which means all of us. These 'harmless' groups are a public health hazard and should be moderated, just like hate speech, libel, or public nuisance

You should consider migrating to this service. It'll help keep your Toyota and government phone app from spying on you.

                • -3

                  @SydStrand: OK then.

                  1) 'most people get their information from Facebook' - > yes, and that's a bad thing. " Yes, I agree, if that's the ONLY place people look. I'm not sure if that worse than people who just their information from the TV or not but others can decide for themselves on that point. So to clarify what I meant was that that's just the way a lot of people are these days. I didn't comment at all on whether that was good or bad. As I also said I don't do social media so I don't have and have never had a FB account. But as a whole bunch of people do and have been accustomed to operating in that paradigm it makes sense to give them an opportunity to explore a similar platform that will be (presumably) less censored by 'establishment' interests.

"If people are getting health information from FB, it should be moderated as such, like the TGA does to the health and medicines market"

And therein lies the problem. 'Who' gets to decide what should be moderated and what shouldn't? And on what topics? As I briefly mentioned, groups or individuals preaching (real) hatred or calling for violence against innocent people need to be kept in check and I don't think there would be too many reasonable people who would disagree with that. But people who are causing no harm to others (like people who have already been harmed and are looking for help) and need the support of people going through similar issues should NEVER be censored. Imagine if they censored a diabetes support group for example? As for the TGA, you do realise that it is totally funded by industry which (IMO) undermines any pretence towards impartiality that they may lay claim to.

2)'there's rampant censorship of vaccine effects!' That's not what I wrote and therefore your comments on that point do not apply.

                  3) 3) 'but the anti-vaxxer groups were harmless!' Again, that's not what I wrote, please stop misquoting me and then replying to your own 'interpretation' of what you think I said.

And thanks for stalking my off-topic previous QUESTIONS about matters that have nothing to do with alternative social media platforms and which were answered in those threads.

        • For Australia -
          528 deaths from vaccine.
          1,448 deaths from Covid.

          • @Other: Source?
There was another thread that got posted but then was removed before I got to have a look at it.

            • @91rs: Only 9 linked to immunisation.

              https://www.tga.gov.au/periodic/covid-19-vaccine-weekly-safe…

"Since the beginning of the vaccine rollout to 24 October 2021, approximately 34.4 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered. The TGA has found 9 reports of death that were linked to immunisation from 629 reports received and reviewed. The overwhelming majority of deaths reported occurred in people aged 65 years and older. The deaths linked to immunisation occurred after the first dose of Vaxzevria (AstraZeneca) – 8 were TTS cases and one was a case of immune thrombocytopenia (ITP)."

Trump does have millions of American and international supporters.

Buidl the network on a decentralised platform using nodes spread around the world. Make it immutable and permissionless with no central point of failure.

Use a DAO to govern the platform and make censorship impossible or by a 9:1 majority.

    This could work.

    • +1

Agreed. It does give it the edge over Gab or Gettr.

    • So you mean Freenet.

    • Work for what exactly?

Except the goal isn’t a service without censorship it’s a service that pushes only political propaganda. Their terms of service explicitly say they can remove you or your content for any reason or no reason. It’s where you go if you don’t want any dissent from the narrative.

      • Does it not depend on enforcement as well? I mean isn't that a rather large part to ignore?

I mean a terms and service could demand your first born son, but if its not enforced in any way, does it matter?

        • +1

Do you honestly think the thinnest skinned political figure in modern history won't censor criticism or dissent?

          • @[Deactivated]: Perhaps it will have an option not to allow comments on an individuals post.

Then you are not censoring anyone.

            We will see.

It will be interesting to see what will happen.

I've got a feeling that people who hate Trump will just spray so much crap that it will be easy to come up with a justifiable reason to ban them.

For example I had someone come after me, posting comments on every public post (swearing/rude) on my page.
            That would fall under harassment.

            • @Other: Oh, they won’t care about censoring people being rude to each other. Just people not being onboard with the narrative, no matter how politely they disagree, it’s in the rules.

Will it fact check all of Trumpz fake news. That would be a test. Can't believe the guy still thinks the last election was rigged. So to make things true. Just keep saying the same lie over and over.

    • Will it fact check all of Trumpz fake news

      Thank you captain obvious :)

    • -7

"Can't believe the guy still thinks the last election was rigged. "

Overwhelming [BUT CENSORED BY BIG TECH] evidence says so.

      For example …
Public Data Shows 432,000 Trump Votes Removed in Pennsylvania Election: Data Scientists
      https://youtu.be/e2mH9X4jQT8

    • Here is a controversial thought.

      It was rigged.

But by negative media coverage which far outstips any other President (Obama had 45% positive / Trump 5%; Bush/Clinton 25% Neg / Trump 60%)

Actually it would be rather easy to test - just look at his first days in office, before any major policies or incidents.

    "Truth" from Trump? The irony!

    • Why was it so wrong, racist, fake news when he said the virus came out of China but it's totally fine that Biden now supports that theory?
