WD TV Live Streaming Media Player $115 at Officeworks

100

Not sure if this is a temporary deal or a new permanent price placement to compete with Apple TV.

Last week Officeworks was the cheapest seller of this unit at $135.
Now you can get it from them online or in store for only $115.

Fantastic little unit, 2xUSB, WiFi, LAN, Optical & HDMI out.

    • Shouldn't you be able to get it for $109.25 (5% lower than JB… given the officeworks policy)?

      • They only pricematch if the competitor's price is lower. In this case, it's the same.

        • That's to stop people trying to get 5% off all the time.

  • lol, I've been thinking about getting one of these lately and found this last night.

  • I bought one early this year and have been using it for a while now. I did come across an issue with playing avi files over the wireless-N from a Windows 7 PC.
The files stutter and lose sound. Happens with a lot of avi files with mpeg sound, AAC encoded sound seems to work fine.
The same files work fine on the same player, when played from a usb HDD.

Keep this in mind if you are buying it mainly for streaming over wifi guys.

Price is good though, I paid about $140 a few months ago.

  • is there an internet browser for this unit yet?

  • I've had problems similar to the commment above me. If you plan to use wireless, then make sure the router is in the same room, otherwise don't bother streaming full HD videos. There will be a lot of stuttering and eventually the video will stop playing. Solution: Use an ethernet cable.

Edit: Emphasis on full HD (ie. 10 GB compressed videos). If the videos are smaller, then it should be fine.

Is your data source on wireless too? If both your source (PC) and wdtve are using wireless then you are at least halving your bandwidth, since there are 2 wireless streaming connections across your wifi.

Does anyone have any reviews from streaming wirelessly, from a NAS cabled to the router? This is the setup I have at home and am interested in the results.

      • My data source is my computer connected to the router via ethernet cable.

The WDTV is nevertheless a great product, just this issue of stuttering when streaming LARGE files over WiFi that you can easily overcome by using an ethernet cable. Small files are fine.

Not sure how other media players compare.

I recommend the ACRYAN over this one at the same price.

You guys might also want to consider using power over ethernet for 720p files.

    http://www.umart.com.au/newindex2.phtml?bid=2

Other options like TPLINK and Aztec

It doesn't work very reliably with 1080p but for 720p it worked fine for me.

  • i went to amazon.com
    http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-Streaming-Media-Player…

calculated my postage and handling, they bet it by 5% and i ended up getting it for $104.
This was at the osborne park WA perth one.
i don't have the docket with me but if you call in advance and speak to a guy in the IT department, he'll say he can.

Good price. The WDTV Live is highly recommended. It plays just about anything you can throw at it.

Last night, my wife, my kids and I were watching three different 1080p movies off the same NAS (100mb i/f on the NAS) on three different devices. One of the sources was to the WDTV live. The WDTV live did not skip a single beat during the entire movie.

If you want a media player, here are some options

    • VLC on a PC - if you're running a PC, it's the bees knees
    • WDTV Live - if you want a stand-alone low power box that does all, this is it. My friends call this "VLC in a box" because it plays just about anything
    • Apple TV - Well, it's Apple .. Not as flexible as WDTV live, but has IOS interoperability. If you only want upto 720p and don't want things like FLAC any many other formats and you love Apple, then buy this product!!

    DeWalt

    • The new Apple TV does 1080p now.

    • I'm interested in the WDTV live, what files does it NOT play? How about .iso files?

      • It plays iso, avchd, mkv. I have not encountered any files it wont play yet. I even tried a 35gb bluray iso of transformers 3 and played without a issue over ethernet. I watch alot of mkv anime and asian films and never had any issues. I cant answer on rm files as I have never tested it with them.

Love the player. Does have some quirks but I eneded up buying two I like it so much. One for the main room and one for the bedroom.

  • anyone had luck with price matching @ OW in Melb. can't even price match amozon. They say
    - amozon doesn't come with aust warrenty so can't price match
    - receipt from competitors Must be "same day"

    • It's up to the store's descretion to pricematch. With online stores especially overseas, it's much harder to do so especially with factors such as parallel import, colour, version, combo, warranty, shipping costs, stock availabiliy, shop credibility etc. With Amazon, I just tried and I got it down to $108.14 and technically you should be able to pricematch. However once again, it is up to the store's discretion.

      • OW @ QV Melb is a real b*tch. Tried to pricematch iTunes giftcards once but they had the same crap about
        1) they needed a printout
        2) then the printout had to be printed out "same day"
        3) then the manager refused to price match

Another time they refused to price match because it was an online store (even though the store was in the same state).

        Grr….

        • Unlucky.

I've had the WDTV Live for a few months now and highly recommend it.

Plays 99% of files I throw at it, however I find perfect performance from just playing files off a USB stick rather than streaming (as I watch 1080p files). There is also a firmware update about once a month so WD are supporting it pretty well adding services/formats/features.

    It's also good for watching YouTube/Twit/Vimeo HD/etc.

  • for those that have it can you tell me what "skip" functions it has. Such as 30sec skip, 3min skip, skip to a particular minute point etc. Also how quickly does it skip and is fast forwarding smooth. I have the original WDTV Live, a PS3, old XBOX with XBMC and the old XBOX/XBMC (only standard def though) is the only one I enjoy using because the rest have crappy skip functions.

    • When the video begins playing, you have the option of skipping. It allows you to skip to any time of the video.

Good unit but bad firmware with random slow down and unable to read movie file that was playing fine prior. Latest firmware has not fixed this. Search with google if you want to find out more.

  • A built-in WebKit web browser or similar would be fantastic. Easier keyboard entry would be nice too, but that's from the superseded version.

  • Is this able to play video on your computer over wifi? Does streaming get included into the ISP data usage? How compatible is this with an iMac?

    • I suggest you learn how to use Google. I am not wanting to sound mean, but I don't think u will get a better answer. :-)
