Safest Way to Eat Cake Mix?

So if someone rather eat cake mix (raw) without it being mixed- you know the pre packaged mixes that you can buy in woolies without the eggs- is that safe

Simply looking online says it can contain e coli. Should one then just heat the pre mix in the oven to eat it safely?

You mean cookie dough or boxed cake mix? People eat cookie dough raw all the time.

      • Have no idea why you would want to eat that raw but yes, it's fine.

There was an alleged issue with some cake mixes in USA that seemed to contain E. coli but was never confirmed and only 16 people were affected. The investigation was closed last month as no longer needing to be looked at further.

Have no idea why you would want to eat that raw

who has time to bake the cake
it all comes out the same

          • @crentist: Comes out the same but I bet you wouldn't it what like that…

    • +1

I got this so so wrong, I thought OP was asking whether it was safe to just the eat the cake mix powder straight from the box and I was trying to work out why you'd want to 😂😂

      • +2

Still seems that is what they are asking.. Isnt it?

        • +1

🥶 By the looks of all the comments about raw egg, I assumed they meant they were just not putting it in the oven…

  • +2

Just eat it and let us know how you go

Wouldn't do this, raw eggs not safe to consume.

I’ve been making a variety of chocolate Mousse, that uses raw eggs, for over 30 years. I’ve yet to poison anyone yet.

        • +1

you mean you haven't had complaints…

          • +2

@funnysht: I mean I’ve had people asking me to make it again. If I’d caused any issues someone would’ve mentioned it. However, I do, immediately, refrigerate the mousse when I’ve made it and I use the freshest eggs I can get.

I, also, store my eggs in the fridge.

I might look into the pasturization.

        • It’s usually fine, but every now and then it goes wrong. Like this time
          https://www1.health.gov.au/internet/main/publishing.nsf/Cont…
From my studies I remember a case study where someone accidentally poisoned their colleagues with tiramisu made with raw home laid eggs at the work Christmas party, with several colleagues hospitalised.

I’m not saying I wouldn’t do though, my brother and I would battle it out ‘lick the spoon/bowl’ after mum had made a cake growing up. My mum also used to make mayonnaise from scratch with raw eggs (I can’t be bothered with the effort myself).

          Some tips to reduce risk
          https://www.abc.net.au/health/thepulse/stories/2013/12/19/39…

          • @morse: Thanks for the link. I, basically, follow this. I usually buy the eggs the day before I use them and I store my eggs in the fridge.

      • +5

Nothing wrong with raw eggs in this country. Make real mayonnaise all the time for years. Never an issue

        • There's been outbreaks, but I think improper storage is usually a factor.

In saying that I still don't get why some supermarkets refuse to keep the eggs refrigerated

  • +4

It's really difficult not to kinkshame…

  • +2

The only reason it is advised not to eat raw cake batter is because the eggs may contain Salmonella.

Don't overthink it. Egg-less batter is fine.

  • Hi, I am a baker by trade and have been commercially baking for many years. Eating cake mix is fine as long as you don't eat it by the bowl. Maybe a little lick here and there. As the cake mix contains raw egg, this can pose some risk. A good way to mitigate this risk is to scramble or fry your eggs before mixing it in with the batter as this ensures that it is cooked and the raw egg won't give you any king of disease. Thanks.

    • +5

good way to mitigate this risk is to scramble or fry your eggs before mixing it in with the batter

      That sounds disgusting :)

A better way would be sous vide the eggs at pasteurisation temperature(57c) so it's still a raw egg and able to be mixed through the cake mix.
Then you can eat that cake mix as much as you want ;)

      • Much easier to microwave them for pasteurization

        • +1

You need to not cook it, which means you need to control the temperature

        • +2

Sous vide means you can do large patches, eggs remain in shell, and can then be stored in fridge for extended period.
          Also more controlled.

But still, anything's better than being recommended to mix fried or scrambled eggs through cake mix :)

@SBOB: I'm pretty sure Rocky ate/drank raw eggs everyday and he's still alive

            • +1

              @TEER3X: So did Apollo Creed.
Raw eggs didn't seem to work out for him.

    • +4

this this guy is a troll LOLOL

      • +2

Agree. No one should ever put scrambled or fried eggs into cake mix. It's not like the egg will magically incorporate through and the cooked egg taste will disappear… Just no, you'll end up throwing the whole batch out.

      • +3

youre the only one that got it

    • thanks
waht about a table spoon here and there

and scrambled egg mixed with cake mix…yeh doesnt sound nice

    • +3

I would not recommend eating cooked eggs in the raw batter.

As a baker myself, you should know NOT to include cooked eggs in traditional cake batter or even bake it……..

      Why?
1 - It changes the dynamics of the batter, the consistency, and the taste
2 - The chemical process will not adhere to the other ingredients in the batter
3 - The egg white acts as a mechanism to fluff up the cake or "leavening" the cake which makes the cake rise.
4 - The cooked egg will result in just pieces in a dense cake just like chocolate chips look like in a cookie batter
5 - The egg needs to be merged with the other ingredients to activate the other molecules in the other ingredients
6 - The yolk holds extra liquid from the other wet ingredients which make the cake a bit more moist and bouncy
7 - The eggs in a traditional cake batter is like the glue for the other ingredients….. water, full cream milk, oil or other liquids will not do a great job being the 'glue' in the batter, not to mention the texture of the cake will be way different.

I don't know why someone would eat cooked eggs in raw batter let alone to be cooked in one.

But in saying that, "The Centers for Disease Control estimates that 1 in every 20,000 eggs are contaminated with Salmonella". If you really want egg in your raw batter, then know the stats.

There are body builders and fitness people drinking 3+ raw eggs each day. I am not saying take the gamble, just know the stats.

Only safe to eat it on Saturday nights while you are on the couch, crying and watching some gawd awful 90’s rom-com…

    • +2

      Thats tonight sorted

I thought that was icecream straight out of the tub with a spoon?

Ya mean I've been doing it wrong all this time?

  • +1

    Are you ok?

  • +5

All these years I’ve never known raw eggs were such a problem. My mother always made us kids a milkshake she called an egg flip because it contained a raw egg. I never got sick from it once. I wonder how common it is.

We also got to finish what ever batter was left on the beaters and bowl when she made cakes (without getting sick) but I doubt a whole packet of cake mix would be appealing.

    • +3

I'd guess very rare in Australia, I think the outside of the shell is the issue anyway

Safest Way to Eat Cake Mix?

    liquefy it after it's baked.

  • "It's not cocaine, Officer! I swear!"

  • COVID cure?

  • +2

It's basically just sugar and flour. It's safe in that you won't get sick or die from it in the short term, but it's not healthy or nutritious in any way.
Eat a tonne of that kind of crap in the long term and it probably will make you sick and eventually kill you. Enjoy.

  • I've seen some pretty strange stuff on OZB over the years, but eating raw cake mix out of the box!! No, just no. Raw flour is gross.

However, I will admit to scraping the bowl and licking the spoon after the cake is mixed. Been doing that since I was about 6 years old and now 71. Never had a problem with the raw egg, but then it is only a miniscule amount in the end.

Have also made mayonaise occasionally and suffered no ill effects. But I don't like Egg Nog made with raw egg! I am fully aware of the risks of raw egg, so I rarely have it, less so now given my age.

  • +1

    it can contain e coli.

Is it the main ingredient though?

If it is, it might taste crap…

  • Just use a dessert spoonful of yoghurt to replace the egg. You wont notice the difference.

  • yeah its fine.
If you want to enjoy the cake mix flavour just whip up butter and sugar. roughly 2.5:1 ratio of sugar to butter for best taste.

Use brown sugar if you want to spice things up.

Merged from How Much Raw Icing Sugar Can You Eat before Getting Sick?

Just following up from the cake mix thread.

So I've eaten my packet of raw cake mix so now I have to do something with the icing sugar i bought.

Just wondering how much is safe to eat in one go?

    • +6

Only one way to find out.

Let us know how you go.

    • Double the inverse amount of butter in your coffee.

    • Icing sugar is just finely ground regular sugar so whatever your diet will tolerate I guess.

      • +1

        its delicious.

you can actually make it yourself if you chuck sugar in a grinder.

      • Tastes like diabetus

If you can eat the baked cake in one sitting (with all the ingredients), then you should be fine, right? Or the ratio you could handle/eat the baked cake :).

    • yes

    • none

    • 89% of your bodyweight in icing sugar before it even remotely becomes an issue.

    • Sounds like OP suffers from a blood sugar imbalance and should see a health care professional.

  • People put raw eggs in smoothies/protein shakes all the time.

I eat the home made batter. I’ve never been sick.

    • Here here. Have eaten it since I was a young child and let our children now do the same.
It’s the best bit. Have never been sick. In saying that, it’s usually just the left over bit in the bowl not eating it by the bowl full.

    • +1

Agree. Raw cake mix including eggs, by the spoonful, licking it off the beater etc.. never a problem.

Raw eggs in smoothies all the time.

Hell, we used to, and still do, eat raw sausage filling from the ends of sausages when they are cooking.

OP ever been to a fancy French restaurant and had the steak tartare? It's literally raw mince and a raw egg.

Everything in moderation people. Including these scraping the bottom of the barrel (pardon the pun) forum posts!

    • +2

Is no one reading the OP properly… They're not talking about it mixed up, just it literally in the powder form

  • This belongs in /r/oddlyspecific

Op is either pregnant and has specific cravings or has been smoking a whole bunch of weed and has the munchies but it’s too lazy to prepare something in advance. Or some combination of the two.
