Nice find, though it should be noted that the OS is still fairly immature and the app ecosystem is quite sparse.

One thing that's cool about the Blackberry tablet? It's possible to convert Android APK (apps) into an app that can run on the PlayBook. All you need is this Repackaging tool that will do your software conversions.

This public Google Docs Spreadsheet shows a listing of convertible and tested software.

  • preorder? if this is the new model the fair enough, by the specs its the same.

  • scrimshaw's icon says it all… Why would anyone buy a Playbook?

    • Because they are a solid unit, that plays most things very smoothly thanks to qnx os. It does lose major appeal without a blackberry phone though.

      • How so? The biggest disadvantage of the Playbook (the inability to receive email) was rectified with Playbook OS 2.0. Frankly this seems like an interesting deal, and I'm seriously inclined to research the Playbook and see if it's a good deal for an IT technician.

        • Pairing with a Blackberry phone enables the interface between the two, ie viewing whats on your blackberry etc.

I am an IT tech and its a great tool to play with and practice developing apps.

        • played with it for a few weeks to assess it for work. its a solid unit, however the citrix client available at the time wasn't very usable. lack of a skype client also forced you to use the BB app and so could only use it with other BB users.
i had to upgrade the bridging software on my BB9800 before i could actually tether the PB (after our exchange admin changed the security policy on BES).

    • You could hedge on cyanogenmod like the HP touchpad

  • can you hook up an external hdd to this? i bout the MSI windpad that was on here before, but that couldnt, maybe this can?

    • +2

      no it cant

you need to look toshiba and acer.

        Or Lenovo

Get Acer Iconia A500/1 - great for hooking up external HDD.

      • yeah , I used to hook up 1 TB portable to it Full of movies and that showed no problems at all…

That was the only good thing About it ..

    • I read that you CAN hook up a USB device to the Windpad.
all you need is a "mini-USB On The Go" cable.
Recommended it to a friend who was looking for a cheap tablet with that feature

      • no you cant, at least i couldnt. i bought a mini usb on the go cable on ebay, and tried it with at least 7 different hdds and flash drives, just couldnt get it working, so i sent that windpad back to big w.

        • it works fine with the 32gb sandisk cards from the post a few weeks back. picked up an OTG cable from ebay for 5 bucks delivered as well. as the 10" has two mini sd ports, it was a process of elimination with unmounting and then remounting to get it to detect the cards but it only took a dew minutes so, not sure if it's an issue with the 7"?

still waiting for the $99 mark

Shhh… don't say fire sale. Oh wait. I just did.

  • Can you install android over the top of this? Wipe it clean and do a fresh install?

    • Not so far….

    • Nope.

    • the hardware is almost identical to the amazon fire. which i believe you can do that to. and is a similar price if you import one.

  • When is delivery date? Is there 3g version of the tablet?

  • fyi, MLN sold the SteelSeries 5XB headset for $29.95 on Boxing Day. It's a good headset. However, the headphone amplifier only works through USB power.

  • Not a bad deal. Also, Blackberry has stated that the playbook will recieve the BB 10 OS update.

Wow looks like every RIM employee has logged on just to +ve this one.

But sadly a brick is cheaper and a more effective doorstop.

    • Te new OS fixed a lot of its issues.
The Hardware is good, the software just needs to catch up.

    • $250 for a tablet of this build + headset is still a good deal, even if the OS is a sinking ship. You can still browse, email, play (some) games etc.

  • Is this an Android device? Seems cheap though.

    • not android

      • Than no good for me :(

    • Did you read any of comments before posting? The first comment talks about running Android apps on it, & others ask if Android can be installed yet (nope).

  • playbook is an awesome tablet. qnx OS is great. High quality, full flash (meaning you can watch youtube and those filthy porn streaming sites)… new OS 2.0 update makes the email client work. Not to mention the micro hdmi connector which lets you play full 1080p to your HDTV. I would argue that apps are not really needed for a tablet if you have full web (flash) compatibility like the playbook. in addition if you look hard enough on the net you can find the pirated apps for you cheap bastards. I've used both ipad and playbook. I prefer the playbook due the nice form factor and full flash compatibility.
