they can stop the buy/sell button if it goes against their best interest

    • +5

Actually DriveWealth is who did that, their broker.

They have also imposed SELL limits totalling 1.5 mill USD for certain stocks (AMC) ….

  • +7

Tempting but selfwealth has free brokerage on ETFs atm lol

    • Selfwealth doesn't allow DRS. Stake allows transfer to DRS. Still good to spread the eggs around.

      • What is DRS?

      • Does it cost anything?

      • Selfwealth is CHESS sponsored for ASX traded stuff which, as far as I can tell, is the Australian equivalent of the American DRS.

        • +1

Stake ASX is also CHESS. DRS-ing refers to US stonks

  • Do you go on a waitlist, or is this an active account?
What is the difference between the two referral links for skate? and is this deal better than either of those?

    • The first one is for the wall st stocks. The second one is for the beta programme that Stake will be starting soon for ASX trades (free brokerage for few months?).

  • +3

Stake's Market buy is totally Fraud, If you do not use Market buy/sell then aka use LIMIT buy/sell then Stake is okay. If you use Stake's Market buy, they'll charge you like 10-20% more than actual share price for your order.

Also there platform is not the best atm, e.g. WESTPAC today in morning was showing at like 26 AUD when other brokers had it for like ~23 AUD.

I had issue on my order being frozen and had to contact their support (so annoying) just for sake of having my pending order cancelled because i could not cancel it myself.

But generally speaking $0 brokerage is way better than $0 brokerage on ETF's only.

    • +5

$0 brokerage isn't the best when they route through Payment For Order Flow and your shares never hit the exchange. You need to do your DD on the brokers to ensure that the shares you're purchasing are yours.

Drivewealth, Stakes broker does use PFOF https://legal.drivewealth.com/sec-rule-606

I would rather pay a cost to know the shares are going straight to the exchange vs PFOF where they can attempt to get it at a lower cost and still charge you the same.

      • You speak very technical so could you please explain Little bit more clearly for naive investor?

I just opened stake account and transferring all ASX stock to stake.

I may buy some US stocks as well.

        • Unsure about ASX and how they deal with that sorry.

Honestly Drivewealth isn’t that bad Re PFOF compared to some.

To be honest, do your due diligence to make sure that the switch is right for you.

      • -1

PFOF has nothing to do with shares being "yours"

    • How do you contact them?

    • +1

Did you place a market buy outside of US trading hours?

      • -1

Yes i placed order around 3-4pm AEST, or earlier DURING ASX trading times

Main problem was cased by this thing ORDER STATUS - PENDING AMEND

        https://i.imgur.com/SsDzFyw.png

        • +2

It's normal for this to happen. You should be placing limit orders outside of market hours

          • -2

            @sanur:

It's normal for this to happen

No it's not all orders are generally only meant to be placed when market is open on that Platform (so ASX in this case)

    • Regarding Westpac issue, I can say that this morning same happened on selfwealth as well.

I also noticed that selfwealth price are may be half second behind in update compare to stake. I never knew stake has live price trading.

One negative I see with stake is that they don't give market depth.

      • Stake has live pricing?

    • Stake is routing to Chi-X so prices can be different

Just a warning the ATO will harass you regularly about foreign income as soon as they find out you have foreign stock.

    • +2

Scare campaign? Why would they harass if you just report your foreign income?

      • -6

Didn't meant to be a scare campaign. Just a PIA that they request you to fill out forms annually on it.

They love to get their grubby hands on anything you make.

        • +5

It's really not that hard. Just fill in on My Gov prefill.

        • +7

Yeah, you probably learn about ATO from the same school that teaches that don’t do two jobs otherwise you will end up paying more tax. Slow claps!!

          • @IMadeYouReadThis: yes technically if you do 2 jobs (and claim tax free threshold on both) you can very easily offset money that you would have had earned from single job.
            How?

Pay taxes with your own money AFTER salary INSTEAD of employer's money aka BEFORE salary. - SO you can use CC points, discounted GC etc.

But of course you still gotta pay taxes as required by law.

        • +9

they request you to fill out forms annually on it.

They do that for domestic income as well. Those bastards /s

  • +6

Atlassian is around AUD$600/share … So you finish up with 1/30th of a share. Might as well be 0.

There's easier ways to make $20 for giving away your person details.

    • +1

Mixing AUD and USD??? Does it matter what proportion of a share it is if you don't care about voting rights? Do you also think 4 apple slices is more than an apple?

      • No one I’ve ever seen slice a apple into a quarter, so 4 slices is probably not more than a apple.

      • Mixing AUD and USD???

        I misread the post, sorry - it's US$20/450 = 1/22nd of a share. Much better than 1/30th.

Does it matter what proportion of a share it is if you don't care about voting rights?

Probably not, but selling your personal info for $20 (US or AUD) is a crappy deal.

        • +2

          Probably not

So why do you keep calculating the proportion?

    • I still remember in 2018 when atlassian was < $100 p share. I was interested in the company but never made the jump to buy.

      • I tend of think if software companies as a "no brainer". No one ever changes software vendors.

    • Also keep in mind that you can't transfer fractional shares from Stake and there are huge fees associated.

      • Why are there huge fees, if you can't transfer them? Are the fees only when you transfer a whole share?

  • +1

Probably ozbargained, it takes forever to sign up, still waiting the site to load to the next screen after I entered the required details.

    ⛔️ caution ⚠️

When you sign up and fund your account, we digitally complete the W8-BEN (or W9 if you are a US tax resident) for you.

This reduces any withholding tax on share sales and income (such as dividends) from 30% to 15%.

Stake has automated this process together with our US broker-dealer, so your documentation is complete and the appropriate withholding tax will be applied to your account.

We charge US$5 upon your first funding and you only pay this once. You'll see this fee on your first funding before you decide to transfer your funds. The fee for your first funding was $8.99 USD (Including the $5 USD for the W8-Ben Form).

    • +3

So there is a $14.99 USD fee for signing up/transferring funds?

Other than that any other catches?

      • So really the share just covers the cost. With a extra 5 usd

      • +2

I have $5 USD + $2 USD fees for first Poli deposit

      • No they charge $5usd. Read the terms.

        • Have you checked? It’s $9 or $7 depending on which deposit option you choose.

    • So if I have a US domiciled ETF (VTS) and transfer to Stake, will they automatically fill in this form for me?

  • +1

Always no love from Stake for those who have an existing account but not funded yet :(

    • They're more like you than you realise

      • Yeah, indeed I am finding Stake to be a bit stingy.

        • Lol

          • @congo: Not funny, honestly.

When I withdrew everything from my eToro account, they actually gave me US$100 (probably afraid I was gonna close my account).

This is on top of all the referral bonuses I got with eToro which is worth US$100 a piece:
            https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/600604

Stake, you got to do better if you want people like myself to trade on your platform.

            • @ilovefullprice: How much is the brokerage with etoro?
              Referrals is not that important.
Cheap brokerage makes a huge difference to the bottom line, you are a day trader

              • @congo: Just like Robinhood, there’s no brokerage with eToro, but of course this means fees are incorporated into the spread, which I don’t know how big this is.

I am not a day trader, so for those people like me, Stake needs to do better!

    • I have been with stake for two years. I am on stake black. I like the platform. They have gotten better but more expensive as they add more and more features.

I only had a problem once during the GME / AMC saga, but that was across the board as brokers limited buying of those stocks.

      • +1

It wasn't just limiting stocks. The entire platform turned into a shit pile when you can't even load the latest prices, place buy orders / sell orders, get updated holdings etc.

Their back end was literally garbage. It's one thing to get blocked from buying GME / AMC, but it's another thing for ALL features, including logging in, to completely fail.

  • Trying to sign up but it gets stuck loading on the sign up page

    • I had to switch to Edge (ick) vs Chrome; i assume because of one of my ad blockers

  • +2

Highly recommend anyone with > $10k USD to use IBKR instead FX fees are much lower

    a great Australian company

    As Australian as Rupert Murdoch.

Hard to say who is a bigger ****.

    • Murdoch would have more influence

    • +4

      Really?

At least Michael Cannon-Brookes and Scott Farquhar have been pushing for action on climate change while Murdoch was actively undermining efforts until he recently finished divesting a large part of his fossil fuel investments.

    • +1

Many Atlassian products are quite difficult to use compare to their competitors imo, especially JIRA and Bitbucket

      • -1

And they pulled the rug out from under us at my company when they made "Team Calendars" pro-only after we had migrated to it from outlook on the standard plan. Now we're paying thousands more per year.

  • Thanks, great deal.

  • It's at least US$29 of free shares, go pro and Atlassian. If you get luck you could get US$200 we'll worth it and add your referral to the wiki about and you normally get another free share a year. We'll worth it!

    • The wiki what?

    • +4

      I got a crappy $2 stock

      • The ball drop thing is automated right? I thought I had to play the game 😂.

      • Hmm their referral page is quite misleading. It's almost all balls of gopro/nike/dropbox but they add in a couple of question mark balls to hide the fact they'll give you a $2 stock.

It used to be only gopro/bike/dropbox so they added this 'mystery stock' crap because gopro went from $2 to $10 and they don't want to give out that much.

Can we use a citibank global currency account to transfer USD to stake, so we dont use their conversion and additional charges for currency conversion?

    • Thats a good idea, would be keen to know

    • You can wire USD directly into your account but they charge a flat $5 fee

  • How much to deposit to be eligible?

    • Not mentioned anywhere.

    • +1

50 AUD is the minimum deposit

      • Plus $9 US in fees. Not worth it.

  • the sign up stuck for 10 minutes on Chrome

    • +2

Try the app. I’ve just signed up and done within 2 minutes.

  • Stake vs Pearler ETF investing… Who's better? I believe the MER free ETF options for holding 1 year at a time to be worthwhile, BUT, the options they have for that perk don't look like good value to me.

I'd probably go with Stake for the $3 brokerage fee for anything listed on the ASX

    • +1

Selfwealth has free ETFs at the moment

Pearler free ETFs are only iShare ETFs I'm pretty sure. Personally I prefer some of the Vanguard and Betashares ETFs over iShares.

      • Stake is ETF brokerage fee free until 1 January 2022, Selfwealth copied them. Stake offer is because they're testing the asx ETF purchasing at their end as a kind of promo I guess. As you know, the ETF holding fee waiver deals are something different altogether.

Good to see some real competition in the market, all of these options are chess sponsored too.

  • +2

Not as good as their Airbnb stock promotion. The holding I got for free from that is now $83 USD.

  • Has anyone tried transferring money to Stake US and trading on NYSE using Stake?
How much do you lose in conversion fees on the transfer? Do you pay the full rate US tax?
