Convert AmEx travel credit to Qantas credit

Hi All,
I have the qantas amex with the $450 amex qantas travel credit. Is it possible to convert the amex credit into qantas credit. I see that all fares are flexible, I was thinking, I could book a flight and then cancel it and elect for qantas credit, but not sure if this can be done through qantas website.
I see that if it is cancelled through the amex travel site there is a fee.
Not in the mood to travel atm and want to cancel the card.

  • No, because you have to book through Amex travel to use the credit. I don't believe you get the same cancellation options when you're not booking directly on the Qantas site. Best you can do is make a flexible booking that can be changed down the track.

  • Doesn't work, when you need to cancel, you have to contact AMEX and they just issue you another AMEX Qantas credit.

    • I assume the “new/replacement” credit gets a new expiry date.

Yes when I had to cancel my flight with AMEX travel, they extended the expiry date by 12 months.

There is an Ozbargainer out there for every deal - depending on the margin.
I know that you can't 'sell' travel credits, but maybe you can do a swap.
EG. List under 'wanted to buy' AMEX $400 credit for price 'Qantas $450 credit + $50'.
And so Qantas customer is $100 ahead, and you have $400 flexible travel credit.

I had a friend who had the QF amex. Booked a flight to Melb (we are in Perth), due to covid cant fly there. QF directly credited him value of credit to his bank account as he had closed the Amex already. YMMV.

    • I’m going through the same and was told it takes 8-12 weeks for the credits to go to my bank account. Curious to know if this is similar to your friend?

      • Hey! Just asked my friend, yeah he was told 16 weeks. Hes going to call them again in January.

  • I'm in the same situation as Ozbfan. What did you end up doing in the end?

    • Nothing as of yet :(

Here's what I did in early September since my $450 credit was due to expire in mid Sept and Amex said they were not going to extend it:
    1. Booked fully refundable domestic business class flight for Dec 21 which used up all credit and I had to pay ~$300 more on top.
    2. Downgrade my card from a Qantas Ultimate to a Qantas Discovery so I don't get charged the annual fee (for me it was pointless keeping the card until borders fully reopen).
    3. Cancel the flight 2 weeks later via amex travel chat.
    4. Wait for refund. I was informed this can take up to 6 months due to Qantas refund backlog, though I received a full refund within 2 months as statement credit on my discovery card which then had a surplus balance.
    5. Transfer funds to my bank account.

Note that if you don't downgrade the card they will just reissue you with the same travel credit but with a new extended deadline 12 months out from today.

    Best of luck

    • Awesome that would be perfect! Did you get charged any fees for cancelling?

      • nothing :)

        • Just to confirm I have followed the same process as neilpatrickharris and they have just processed a refund for the full amount of the trip back to my card which they advised will take up to 12 weeks so thanks for the great advice!

Just make sure you book a fully refundable flight and to remember to downgrade your card!

          • @gooner90: What card do we downgrade too?

If I want to apply for Amex again in 18 months, will that be from the downgrade?

I need to downgrade or cancel because I can grow for for my home build soon.
            Thanks

          • @gooner90: So you guys got the refund in full shortly after cancelling? I followed the same method, cancelled it over a month ago and they've only just refunded me the dollar amount, not the travel credit :/

That's not very reassuring, it's also really damn hard to contact them about it!

          • @gooner90: How do I find which flights are fully refundable? I can see some flights say 'flexible ticket' but don't specify that they are refundable.

    • Is this the same for AmEx travel credit or specific to Qantas travel credit?

  • I downgraded to the discovery card. I believe the 18 months starts from the date you close your card completely. You are downgrading not closing your card completely yet.

    • Fair enough.

Basically book refundable hotel, downgrade card. Cancel hotel, wait for refund and shut down card. It seems pretty simple!

    1. If you cancel your booking, the Qantas Travel Credit portion is not
refundable and will be forfeited in the relevant anniversary year.

Curious if this was in place when the refunds were issued or has it been added since?
