  • Nice find OP.

Won't the usb3 interface bottleneck the SSD speed? Could anyone advise?

    • +1

      Yes, of course.

    • cannot complain on the price!

    • +1

No, this drive won't threaten usb 3 bandwidth or any where close to it. It's garbage.

      • +3

From this link, https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/613291, obviously the enclosure is bottleneck. Just take SSD out and put into a new enclosure or use it internally. For the price, it's no-brainer.

        • Even if its out of the case, its still 500mb read at the fastest, still not going to threaten usb 3.0 limit of 625. While the write only hovers around 200-300.

Then test sizes of 1gb ain't going to tell you if its qlc or tlc, and if they are hitting the price point, chances are its a qlc drive.

          • @annarchon: The USB2.0 limits is technically 60MB/s but I've never had a USB2.0 HDD go above about 35MB/s. Most normal operations are in the 25-32MB/s range.

I've limited experience with high speed devices in USB3.0 ports/implementations but I'd be astonished if 625MB/s, the full theoretical bandwidth, was even close to the real world application speed it can manage.

            • @DonWilson: Yeah, but 500+ sequential for both read and write is fairly common. This one just scrapped by in the read and awful at write. It also doesn't answer the question on whether the drive is QLC or not, but given the price point there is a good chance it is. So 200-300 write may not even be that.

Samsung 870QVO is only around the 220 range with Farcry 6, and you know exactly what you are getting and no shucking/full warranty

But it won't be at this price point any time soon if I'm not mistaken

Okay let say they're both QLC.
                870QVO: $220 - $20 or $30 (Far Cry 6 - Classified Forum price) = $190 - $200
                WD Go : $157
We're talking about 17% - 21% price difference here. I haven't mentioned about form factor (2.5" vs. M.2) which m.2 is usually more expensive and can be installed everywhere hence the price difference is even higher.
I think you're too quick to judge the drive is "It's garbage"

  • Won't let me buy it.

    • O it let me buy it, fingers crossed it works!

  • Won't add to the cart for me now. Can't buy it now either. Shows the right price on the page but says its updated to other sellers as its unavailable.

    Edit
Just worked that time. After about 8 or 9 attempts.

Was worried I missed out screwing around with payment methods the first time when it vanished from my cart.

Has M.2 SSD inside if you wanted to disassemble and put inside laptop / pc.

    • its shuckable !!

    Doesn't work

  • Got one.Thanks OP.

I have a 500GB version of which the performance is terrible. Write speed is only around 120 MB/s (almost same as HDD).

    • you plugged into USB3 port?

  • -3

    jesus out of stock already.

  • Did any1 experience issues with warranty/returns with an Amazon US or UK purchase? Or does that work as seamlessly as purchasing from Amazon AU?

    • I claimed my Lenovo warranty against Amazon US on September. They opened a case and said someone will contact me. Around one week later I received an email of diagnosing tools. After followed the instructions, it confirmed the issue of USB ports.( Two USB A not working)
I reported back and havnt received any further updates. Now, I used a usb-c hub.

  • I wonder what the drive inside is.

  • damn, missed it

    • Lasted less than 10 min…. I missed it too

Can confirm these are SanDisk drives inside. I’ve put mine in an nvme compatible enclosure and managed 800+/490+ MB/s read/write respectively. The enclosure isn’t worth the silicon and plastic it’s made of!

    • I'm looking to do this since the HDD is slow as paint drying for photo editing. Any advice on recommended enclosure and was it easy enough to take apart?

      • The hardest part was cutting through the double sided tape that they put between the ssd drive and the Wd controller pcb. I soaked it it 95% isopropyl alcohol for 5x5 minutes, gently prying at the drive each time.

As for enclosure, any nvme-compatible external enclosure will do and won’t bottleneck the drive (let the drive be the bottleneck). Check previous OzB deals - I think I got mine for ~$30 back in 2018

        • Awesome. Thanks!
