    I agree, as a retired ex bricks'n'mortar bookseller, me thinks this is just another marketing manoeuvrer.

    The reality is that this period leading into Christmas is a very heavily contested market, though highly profitable many of their direct online competitors will be offering free shipping. regardless of their decision. It is also a time of year that attracts once-a-year book-buyers who will gravitate towards lowest-price/availability/free-shipping.

    Personally, I use a good price aggregation/comparison web-site like booko.com.au (others are available). Just like Static Ice for computer technology.
