Is this meant to be a selling point?

    • Well, it is rather impressive for a child size sim enabled watch.

Regardless, if your child is young enough to need this, you'd be hoping they'd be home within 24 hours anyway.

just fyi, you need to pay for the app $6 monthly, useless without it.

Also different watches only work with certain networks — not sure what network this one will be on.

    • You also need to pay for a sim card. Our son has one and we pay $10 per month with Belong (I think).
Without the sim and the monthly subscription ($16 p/m total), it is just a watch. Put that is the price for peace of mind.

Hmm, so after 10 months (plus purchase cost etc) you're better off with an LTE enabled samsung watch.

I plan to keep my kid longer than 10 months; I think ill go that route.

oh and you cant turn off the SOS button - which will physically call you or 000 when pressed.

These watches actually got banned at my sons school because he's left-handed and wears the watch on his right hand. Since the SOS button is on the right side of the watch - it can get triggered when he leans on his hand. So, even though I had school mode enabled, he leaned on the button during class and it called me which obviously spooked the teachers. The watches were banned school-wide the next day.

I actually sent an email to Spacetalk to complain/ask them to allow the button to be disabled. Just got a generic thanks for feedback response and nothing happened in the 10 months since.

Thank you! Saved me getting one for my 9yo.

    • Likewise glad and thank you for the feedback. Saved me too :)

For the same reasons (school ban and accidental sos button) , I put the watch inside a container and put it in the school bag, a bit derail from its purpose, but hey it works. At least I can see where my kid is, although paying $16pm for subs and telco. There are cheaper gps trackers out there lol.

Yeah, any $25 'locked' android phone, with parental mode turned on so they cant add or run apps.

Grab a locked phone, and a 365day expiry sim. You'll come out worlds ahead.

You realise being children most need to be micro managed, yes? Or do you let yours live on the street?

      • +1

With the obesity epidemic not that many are micro anymore

      • I doubt @caramellokoala is even a parent

  • When is the sale end?

    3G ……. ouch

  • You can get a used Series 3 cellular Apple Watch for around this price, certainly less than this plus a years subscription fee.
    And so much better.

eSIM plan is $99/year and no other fee.
    https://www3.truphone.com/consumer/esim-for-watch/#plans

This is great for kids, works standalone, no iphone.
( Does anyone know of a cheap eSIM for Samsung or WearOS watches?)

    • I think if you are a non tech savvy parent the spacewalk might be simpler to get working and child secure. but agree, a second had apple watch is a much better option. I also imagine the space talk is probably more robust.

      • I thought Apple was idiot-proof. If parent already has an iPhone or iPad, it is easy to add a family setup. Would be harder for people not already in the ecosystem.

          I thought Apple was idiot-proof.

Work 1 day at. A 'genius bar' and bring some super glue; because your world is about to be shattered :p

Bought a TCL familymovetime, that has a good enough App and no subscription. Match it with an Aldi $5 sim, you're good to go.

    • apparently there is a new model coming out too (overseas only atm)

  • Any recommendations on the best place to find a 2nd hand Apple watch?

    • Cash converters; or apples own refurbished program (not always listed, but keep checking back).

    • eBay

  • For what its worth I was looking into these watches about 12 months ago. Not sure if the spacetalk one has improved but from all accounts is very fragile, easily broken and not waterproof.

We ended up going the ticktalk. https://www.myticktalk.com/

Been quite happy with it. App can be a bit glitchy but does what we need and no ongoing fees bar your sim provider costs.

  • Perhaps im showing my age; but i recon if a kid is old enough to have this, they're old enough to have their own "empty prepaid" (recieve calls only) phone.

They can always 000, and you can call them any time.

In the case of child safety, people like telstra just 'throw credit on' in case you need to GPS track in emergency.

A tough case, and an extendable belt clip, and the kids set.
