When buying hard drives, what do people focus on?

Are you asking what drives them? That's hard to say, everyone has different requirements.

      • +3

Sometimes people want a solid answer.

What drives people to make it so hard to give a solid answer. NVM then.

@Koipanda: All jokes aside, it's impossible to answer your question without context. Are you looking for speed, reliability, best TB/$ value, any brand loyalty, external, internal, USB A or C, shuckable 3.5", 2.5", USB powered, PS5 compatibility…

So what some else looks for in a drive, means nothing if your requirements are different.

            • @PainToad: I have no idea tbh. I want something for internal PC with large storage and wont die on me.

              • @Koipanda: Oh those.. no sorry they don't exist.. these are hard drives.. they all die, just depends on how long they live for inbetween 🤣

A popular option here is buying a big 3.5" external and shucking it (removing it from the shell and making it internal). But not all external drives can have this done.

Keep an eye out for external drive deals and check if they can be shucked.

  • Good drive, chunky though

    • It's bit thicker than my other drives but nothing I would complain about.

  • Can you get a price beat on this with OW?
edit: looks like a (slightly) different product there - OW have 4TB OneTouch, this deal is 4TB Backup Plus
Whilst they appear identical, they will have different model numbers, so no price beat.

  • Weird, tried this the other day, but it didn't say Backup Plus, they must've changed it, will try again today.

Just googled, apparently it's different as the one touch has a fingerprint reader. So different models. ;(

      • Really? I bought a one touch from JB not long ago. I didn't realise it has a fingerprint reader at all.

Confusing as it's, whats the difference between Backup Plus and One touch?

    Ordered thanks
