  • I hope the current XPS 13 Ultrabook with Sandy Bridge goes on sale once Ivy Bridge comes out :)

The one with London Bridge is going down…

        JV you've done it again!

ugh nvidia gt 525m makes me cringe!! But other than that rest of laptop is good

Goes with the crap screen. Srsly, 15.6" and still only 1366 x 768? :-/

      • +1

I feel like I have to mention it everytime I see someone say that - not everyone wants higher resolution in a 15.6" laptop. The dot pitch is fine at that resolution IMO.

        • Tell me about it. My Vaio Z res is IMO too high and also screws things around for gaming when you are forced to run high res :(

        • +11

Clearly many people agree with you, and that's fine if you don't care, but the choices for people that do want clearer, well-formed text and detailed pictures have been steadily reducing for years, which IMHO sucks.

10 years ago, I could buy a cheap 15" laptop with a choice of 3-4 resolutions from 1280x1024 up to 1920x1200, or even 2048x1536 (and with GPUs a fraction of today's speeds). Now, only a couple of the most expensive 15" laptops might allow 1080p, and the rest have gone backwards.

I get that people don't like small text, but that's what the system DPI setting is for, which is respected by Windows and nearly all commonly-used software (browsers, Office, Adobe stuff etc) these days. 100dpi would be pathetic in any other medium - the print industry sneers at anything under 300dpi. What's wrong with everything looking nicer? Every single aspect of computing has made enormous strides, except for the screen.

I'm with Namarrgon. Screens should have better dpi as they get bigger, esp with a 15.6" screen. With the launch of the Retina display for the iPad and how it is pretty much universally praised, it boggles the mind how people can like (or tolerate) mediocre screens on laptops :/

        • anyway on some of these models (eg xps 15/17) you can get a full HD lcd upgrade for $138 extra which actually seems reasonably priced.

        • +1

I agree with you Namarrgon, my HP 15.6" at 1366x768 looks fine for normal use but in games and with small text you can really see the roughness of it :(

        • Namarrgon: I understand that there are limited options for those wanting higher res, but the comments are almost always made with the assumption that everyone wants higher res (and these are the comments I respond to).

Yes, you can change font settings and such to improve it, but then you're working against the native res and generally it won't be as clear. It also affects games when you're dealing with either a higher native res (sometimes desirable, but can again be small and does affect performance) or scaling (again, looks worse).

        • +1

CarbonTwelve: I do agree with display scaling (running at lower than native resolution) making things look worse, and if your GPU isn't up to playing Skyrim at a high native res then your choices aren't great.

But if you're at native resolution, then fonts at the same physical size will look always sharper and better defined, as more pixels are used to form the characters (we're not dealing with bitmap fonts these days). XP's old normal/large font size settings always went badly, but Vista/Win7/Win8's Display DPI settings render everything at higher density, and do a perfectly good job.

I'm happy for low-end choices too of course (especially if cheaper), but the only reason I can think of for someone to prefer a low-res screen is if they have to use a specific legacy app that is nigh-unusable on hdpi screens.

        • The problem is that not every app supports scaling as well as Windows and Office. Most will have no scaling options at all, meaning running those apps at native res will either leave the fonts too small or they'll be blurred for people preferring the 1366x768 dot pitch. If every single app supported proper scaling, then sure, it wouldn't be a problem.

  • I'd been put off by the graphic card as well since a few sales ago. ;\
Why can't they just have a graphic card that on par with the rest of their specs

    • Best graphics card I've seen under $1000 (with an i7) has been a GT540m/GT555m, anyone seen any better?

      • I know it's not an i7, but my dv6-6134tx has a 6770m with an i5 and it cost me $579 (40% off @ Harvey + extra 2%), I'd say for any decent gaming you want a 555m/6770m minimum.

        • Is this deal still available Redmoon?

        • Sadly no, was a promotion back in late 2011, was pretty big here on OB

Bought an XPS 17 at the last 30% off deal in Jan, came witha beautiful Backlit keyboard,
    its awesome..

    • +2

BACKLIT KEYBOARD!!! WIN!! I can't see it mentioned in the specs of these laptops but if so…

edit; found it, seems only the xps models have it

  • how does this compare with the Lenovo y570MDM?

2Gb GT555M graphics card… for around the 800-900 dollar mark?
    same specs otherwise

    • +1

Better graphics card that is actually capable of playing games, may be important to some (like me). I suspect that the Lenovo actually comes with a smaller HDD(750gb). Personally I would prefer the Lenoveo purely based on GPU and appearance (slightly lighter as well).

Edit; I should add that if you do not require the (higher end) graphics then the Dell Inspiron 15R is pretty hard to beat for value @ $674

    • Is the build quality likely to be superior on the Dell? Seems like the Lenovo is a far better deal.

The whole "40%" seems like a bit of a joke given the list price difference between the 25% off model and the 40% off model is $400, and the only difference is the extra 4GB RAM and 500GB HDD space.

    • Does anyone know if the Lenovo Y570 comes with Optimus technology for switching between dedicated/onboard graphics?

  • +2

You can also use the buckscoop 5% cashback for Dell: http://www.buckscoop.com.au/cashback/dell-consumer/

    More savings to you!

    • And they actually pay. MBC didn't for the $17 from Dell for the 24" monitor deal. And no yearly fee either.

  • is it just me or is that not a bargain on the 15z? I bought one around Xmas time (A week before they went on sale unfortunately) for around 1350. This deal allegedly has 30% off yet it's still more expensive. Perhaps this is one of those JB-style markup-before-sale sales?

    • depends on what differences in specs there are between ur 15z and this one. The currently offered 15z has a i7-2640M and 256GB SSD in it along with other things which usually adds $ to the cost..

  • I would like to buy a Dell Inspiron 15R at $779(2nd Gen Intel Core i7, 8GB of RAM and 1TB HDD). It says its power option is 130W AC Adapter for Australia/New Zealand/Fiji/Papua New Guinea, whereas I will mainly use it in Vietnam after my graduation in one year. Voltage in Australia is 230V whereas in Vietnam is 220V; should this laptop be well adaptable to 220V voltage as I will stay there long? Any advice appreciated.
