  • R is gone :(

Honestly, no point picking up R. It is currently still being used due to legacy reasons like old academic staff and old phd students who were trained on it.

Python runs much more efficiently overall and is the future. As time goes by, and more and more R libraries are also written in Python, R would just deprecate. Python also has a much much larger community around and supporting it. When it comes to open sourced codes, communities are really important.

      • Have yet to try ggplot2 in Python. But at lot of development in Random Forests is still done in R first. Also, tidyr makes pandas just dumb.

        • RF are really old models hence it’s developed first in older languages like R. As time goes by, more and more models are being written in Python. Newer more modern type models like NN are now meticulously written in Python.

If you want to work for a forward thinking company/institution that would lead rather than follow and inspires to change the world, look for one which is already using Python. Or risk being stuck in time.

          • @ilovefullprice: I think it's good to be flexible with both. It's easily enough to use both, just treat them as tools and use them as necessary. RShiny makes your projects look great, but Jupyter supports both languages anyway.

I find data manipulation and visualisation easier in R. But prefer using Tensorflow in Python for all my models. A fair few mining companies I've worked with predominantly use R, but I get what you're saying with being stuck in time.

            • @karu: It’s good to be flexible but not much longer for R. The Python community is really large and slowly but surely what can be done in R can also be done in Python at the same level or better.

I have not even included in mentioning about newer languages like Ruby, for those who prefer to code less.

Personally, I am using PyTorch. Everyone knows about the well known issues with TF, it’s always better to use a 2nd gen library than the 1st gen and PyTorch’s syntax is more consistent with the Python environment.

Compl…..you get the picture I seem to be addicted to getting these free courses.
But for the the record every course I have done is great.
Ive never had a problem and they seem to offer a lot better information than university courses.
It did make me realise how much of a scam our education system is.
It would be about $14,000 to learn what I have learned off this site. The only down fall is the accreditation.
But I am just doing it for my own knowledge to upskill
