        • so looking to replace it with a kit of 2x 8gb 1rx8 stick

Have you found one? Not sure if the crucial 8gb sticks are 1rx8

  • Any suggestions on deals with RAM and bigger HDD people would put in this?

  • +2

so ran into an issue that i'll likely get bashed for but hey for some of us its a huge consideration like my father.

As you know bluray is a nightmare on pc, ultrahd blury is the worst nightmare.

You need specific cpu and setup on on it etc. Given my old laptop ran them fine as it was >7th gen and worked fine, his old one didn't.

Grabbed this one going hey, the screen isn't 4k but the cpu is past kaby lake so should be good to go.

    Nope.

Requires SGX to do ultrahd bluray by his external UHD bluray drive that he uses at dialysis.

Nope, no sgx, so no uhd :(

  • it's still not out of stock?? does it mean that this deal is not good enough? lol

    • +1

I assume a lot of people are waiting for other black friday deals to compare to, HN return policy is horrible so once you order this you're commited.

    • Plenty of stock available in SA

  • +1

Is this worth the extra $100 over the Acer Nitro 5 15.6-inch i5-10300H?

    • Yes

      • Well I guess we will see if HN will let me swap it then.

From the 10300 deal comments my understanding was the lower power processor complimented the power draw of the GPU, would that be an issue here or more with the i7 model that goes for around $1600 because that processor draws a lot more power?

Does this also have BIOS update to 95w?

Found this comparison website for anyone interested

  • I picked one up today. For the price, can't really argue against the screen or build quality.. I don't really find either that bad to be honest. Also a nice plus is this has an RGB keyboard!

    • Does it have a Thunderbolt port?

      • According to my serial number on the Acer website, this is a AN515-57 model, which only has USB-C (Gen 2) according to the manual. The AN515-56 and AN517-53 models have Thunderbolt.

      • +1

Just to test, I tried to plug in my Dell display with Thunderbolt connector and it did not work.

        • +2

out of interest, does your port have a lightning bolt near it?

mine definitely does and i can open the intel thunderbolt control centre. i won't be able to test it until later today but i am pretty certain mine has thunderbolt. for reference i bought the 54ZA variant, for $1297

          • @peter05: No lightning bolt on mine! Damn, maybe I should have got the 1297 one haha.

  • Can someone help me understand the difference between the model in this deal and Acer Nitro 5 15.6-inch i5-11400H/8GB/512GB SSD/RTX3060 6GB Gaming Laptop?

They seem identical in spec but the above one is $10 cheaper BUT the “retail” price is only save $300 instead of $500 on this deal?

The reason I ask is because in store the laptop I linked seems to be a 11800H on the box (probably not a huge difference but if its identical $10 cheaper and a better processor, shouldn’t that be the deal everyone is going for?)

    • +5

they should both have the same CPU but the one that costs 1297 has thunderbolt

strongly encouraged to splurge the $10 for thunderbolt as it will mean your laptop stays relevant for far longer than without (imho)

      • +1

Wow that would suck to miss, Thunderbolt is definitely worth +$10.

    • The reason I ask is because in store the laptop I linked seems to be a 11800H on the box (probably not a huge difference but if its identical $10 cheaper and a better processor, shouldn’t that be the deal everyone is going for?)

The 11800H one is $1737 but was previously $1598

      • That is an i7 processor (didn’t’ the realise last night) so it is a bit of a bigger deal but from all the comments it looks like that is just a typo on the HN box, everyone is saying it is an i5.

Anyone who bought it and knows the processor could confirm, especially if they still have the box and can check the HN sticker as well.

      • The box says i5-11800H (which is incorrect, 11800H is an i7 CPU) but if you look up the actual model numbers on the box online, it's supposed to be 11400H which is what I expect. (Mine was DOA, did not charge, and needs to be replaced so haven't run HWInfo on it yet).

        • +1

Okay so I bought one ($1297 model) today…

And yeah the HN sticker on the outer box is wrong. It actually says "I7-11800H" on mine. i5-11400H on the Acer sticker on the inner box.

    • I was about to buy this then saw this video… Should I not buy this and opt for an upgrade?

      • for the price you're going to find it hard to beat this laptop. it's more a desktop replacement than a laptop so should probably be split say 50/50 at most desk/portable. you don't want to be lugging this one around but its great to move from one room to another and continue to game etc.

upgrading the ram is all it takes to unlock the laptop and at 8gb you have a good excuse to do so anyway

        • Hi Peter,

I ended up buying this laptop on the weekend, after seeing Jarrod's videos on improvements with external screens and dual ram upgrade?

Since you seem to be quite knowledge regarding this laptop, would you suggest that I grab an identical 8gb stick of RAM to upgrade the Nitro 5 or 2 x 8gb new sticks?

          Cheers,

          Dan

          • @shogun10: Should always go for 2x new sticks. Besides you don't want to buy another stick of the Kingston (if you got the $1297 model) as it's x16 chips (slower configuration). If you got the $1287 model you would've gotten the Samsung stick with faster x8 configuration. But even then it'd be a little bit difficult to source the exact same stick.

The Crucial DDR3200 sticks that are floating around on Amazon and eBay, while they're good, there's no guarantee that you'll receive x8 chips. But they're usually good value, $40-50 for 1x 8GB, and cheaper to buy 2 lots of those then selecting the "2x8gb kit", on Amazon anyway.

  • Confirming that the 54ZA variant for $1297 is actually i5-11400H as per internal Acer box packing

  • +1

Hi all. New here. Can any of you do me a favour if you have bought either the $1297 or $1287 Nitro 5 from Harveys. Can you check the device details and Id in Device Manager (Monitor) for me please. Just wanting to know what screen is on both of these models. No joy trying to get the info from either Harveys or Acer

      • Thanks, much appreciated. Now just hope to hear from someone regarding the AN515-57-55R8 $1287

        • i highly doubt it would vary as the panels for the previous deals at $1198 are also CMN1521's

    • I bought the AN515-57-55R8, and the screen model is Panda LM156LF-2F01.
      https://www.panelook.com/LM156LF2F01_Panda_15.6_LCM_paramete…

I think both screens are pretty bad for gaming with only 66%srgb coverage and really slow response time, but the panda one has a much slower response time of 25ms, while the other one is 11ms.

Quite disappointed Acer uses crap screens for Australian models, as I found some Asian models with the same processor and graphics card have a quality screen from BOE with a 3ms response time.

      • Was benchmarking the 54ZA with my mate's Dell G7 15 (that's no longer made) side by side. I couldn't keep my eyes off his screen! The CMN1521 panel just has crappy colours and quite lacking in brightness. Sux that we get the shit panels here. Doesn't really bother me too much though as I'll be using an external monitor with it.

        • a current G15 with 3060 in it costs $2600 list price from dell website, it also includes the 11800H and an additional 8gb of ram but i think we can agree that the two laptops are in completely different price segments.

the screen is perfectly serviceable in consideration of where it sets in the price/performance areas.

yes, it would be great to get a better screen but you wouldn't be paying 1200/1300

          • @peter05: Yeah his G7 15 is an i7-9750H with 2070 Max-Q. Was $2079 back in March last year. His 240Hz screen (and battery) was actually replaced a few weeks ago after suddenly not working anymore (has 3 year extended NBD warranty). It's a pity they don't make the G7 15's anymore. Apparently it was taking sales away from the Alienware series.

But yeah don't get me wrong, I'm very happy with the purchase after only outlaying ~$1086 for it (7% HN giftcards paid with the discounted Coles Prepaid Mastercards). I don't care about the screen on laptops at all.

Reminder that this deal finishes on Monday 29th November - the store closest to me has 1 item in stock

  • Can anyone who got this deal run the memory benchmarks and let us know if there is a lower than expected RAM speed (including with upgrades) on this laptop?

I have the same problem when adding the extra RAM, speed dropped to 2933Mhz. The original RAM is Samsung and I added a Kingston one, both can operate at CL22 3200Mhz.
I think it happens when mixing different models of ram, even if they have the same clock sequence and frequency.
So I think the only solution is to have 2 identical RAMs installed unless Acer updates the bios so that we can change the setting manually.

Yeah that's right. Something to do with XMP profiles.

Buying RAM these days is such a lottery too. Sellers can't guarantee if you receive x8, x16 or if you're extremely lucky 2r sticks!

  • Does anyone know if this has HDMI 2.1 or 2.0, Seems online reviews showing 2.1 but Harvey norman saying 2.0?

    • HDMI 2.0

      • According to Jarrod Tech (thanks to @MastaSlayer), Acer (scroll down) and PLE Computers (which matches the HN variant NH.QDGSA.002) it's 2.1. I have the laptop but don't have any 2.1 devices to test it with.

        • +1

True, so the HN website is wrong again. It will be much better if Acer provides more specific information about each model, even when I do a search through Acer support using the SN number, it only shows HDMI for i/o, not event mentioning 2.0 or 2.1.

I think you put the wrong link for the PLE website, I found it here:
          https://www.ple.com.au/Products/647766/Acer-Nitro-5-156-i5-1…

          • @VictorL: do note this is the one that's selling for $1297, not 1287, no idea with the 1287 model what it is. seems to be a HN special only

            • @peter05:

no idea with the 1287 model what it is. seems to be a HN special only

Yeah even HN themselves don't know. But yeah it seems like only HN sells that Thunderboltless variant.

              It's listed on Acer though

Ahh yep didn't copas properly. Thanks for that!

  • Anyone been able to undervolt these?
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/642822?page=1#comment
The above link comments say it's disabled due to Plundervolt but there's no SGX to exploit anyway on the i5-11400H.

    • +1

Throttlestop says it's "Locked" :( Laptop runs pretty cool though

  • Rightio, so big problem here, seems like the Crucial MX500 SATA that I just bought doesn't want to POST with the WD m.2 SSD that the laptop came with. It POSTs and gets detected with the WD disconnected though.

A few other users have reported the same issue.

    :/

    • +2

Fixed by disabling the VMD controller in the BIOS!

  • Im noob.
Does rtx series better than gtx?

    • Yes, it's newer and replaced the GTX 10xx/16xx cards.
