Going by the list on the below website mentioning some 1660s, 2060 Max-Q models and the link to 'cheap laptops that are VR ready' in the blurb all being 1650/1660, i'd say a 3060, even Max-Q variant, would handle it..

Heyo, I'm currently running a R9 290 in my PC. In conjunction with a AX200 WiFi 6 card I wirelessly stream PCVR games to my Quest 2 at 66% percent resolution at 72hz. This is a very good experience imo. So if my 8 year old GPU that no longer gets drivers can run VR, it is safe to say that you would be able to run PCVR at a better quality, which is going to be a good enough quality. The Acer Nitro 5 also has the AX200 WiFi 6 chipset, which is very good for PCVR streaming to the Quest. What I do is have the PC running the game be a wireless hotspot and connect the headset to that, and then run ALVR. I've heard that AirLink from the company formerly known as Oculus works well, but alas I cannot run it as my GPU is outdated.
it's a good laptop, 3060 has a moderate TGP in these.

where it gets let down is quality of the screen, and battery life sucks. also cooling is not optimal, gets loud

Interesting about the battery, I find mine much better then my old gaming laptop as it uses igpu unless dad is needed.

I use mine 80% work with occasional night game on sleep over. I'm comparing work usage battery life if I game I plug in.
@Slippery Fish: yup, same. I only game plugged in, and do work on battery. and battery life of Acer sucks - I hardly get 1.5, sometimes 2 hours out of it

Razer does about 5 hours, sometimes longer, depends on what I am doing, and screen brightness

I would advise against getting Blade 15, since thermals are worse than 17. if you prefer 15" Lenovo Legion Pro 16 with 3060 130W is a great option. is probably faster than 2080S Max-Q in mine, and should have a good battery life. but it also had 165Hz QHD so I said pass

Ah just realised you were the acer refurb guy! After advertising it so much on all the deals I thought you really liked the laptop - usually a crappy screen is something you would notice immediately.
I had to return my 2021 Blade 15 adv from the eBay deal becuase of the fan whine issue - made it unusable (headache generator) without headphones while gaming. Otherwise the thermals were fine even when pushed. I'm interested in trying again though with Blade 17 or 14 inch though since they both don't have the same whine. Which site had the sale on the 17 inch?

yeah I did like the Acer a lot, but you know I had good screens in laptops for a long time, so I just couldn't get used to it. it's still awesome value for money I think
but I essentially increased my budget and was tossing up between Lenovo legion pro and Omen, both with decent power 3060 and good screens, but the Razers attracted me the most for the build quality, and fantastic screens

Oddly enough, the cheaper one mentions Max-Q where as the one for $10 more does not - probably means nothing, unless they have randomly released a lower wattage variant.
Thanks for the reply. I'm confused now. Max-Q is supported by all 3060 laptop GPU. So the more expensive one must support Max-Q as well. I have ordered the cheaper one. I will ask the staff about the difference when I pick it up. If the cheaper one comes with lower TGP, I will get the other one instead. BTW, the cheaper one cannot be found anywhere else.

According to Intel the 11400H should only go up to 4.5GHz with 12MB cache
I have picked up the cheaper model and checked spec using the S/N. It also comes with 95W TGP. So there is no difference from the more expensive one. However, neither of them has Thunderbolt™ 4.

How did you confirm this? 11th gen intel CPUs should support TB4. i5-11400H specs page states:

Are you talking about this one? If so shouldn't the model variant be NH.QDGSA.001 which is different to the Acer link?

Yeah it looks like unfortunately both the 11400H versions don't have TB4 according to @ruanjiangongren. Such a shame considering 11th gen should support it.
@CVonC: Only the HDMI 2.0 port is connected to the 3060, the USB-c port is connected to the intel graphic. So g-sync is not possible on this laptop as it only works on DP.
@Pewpew2020: Have you tried Type-C charging? According to this review, the Type-C port of AN515-57 does support DP 1.4 but it does NOT support charging, which is part of TB 4 standard. Unfortunately, I don't have a proper Type-C charger to test it.
BTW, the Type-C port directly connects to the Intel GPU.
@ruanjiangongren: i will be testing the laptop for thunderbolt but there is definitely a lightning symbol next to it so i am fairly certain it includes thunderbolt. i opted for the $1297 model as a search of that model i found on other websites referenced thunderbolt 4. i figured for the $10 there's no point risking not having it for the obscure other model that saves $10

There is only a USB (data) symbol beside my Type-C port. It looks like we finally found the difference between the 2 models. I totally agree with you. There is no point losing TB 4 for saving $10. I did ask the shop staff about the difference before I picked up the laptop. He promised that the 2 models are exactly same. I will probably try getting HN to swap it. But I don't expect anything good out of it!
@ruanjiangongren: yeah i did try and ask some sales staff what the differences were and they just referenced the little spec sheet and obviously all those are exactly the same.
if it's the case that it's a difference of thunderbolt vs no thunderbolt, i think for the $10 for future proofing the laptop it's a no brainer. most people probably wouldn't use it but it's just something that's nice to have and guarantees a powerful laptop for many years to come

For reference, these laptops need beefy power supplies man.
The 180w supply it comes with doesn't sustain it under heavy gaming. It actually draws down on the battery % even when plugged in.BTW, the Type-C port directly connects to the Intel GPU.
Such a shame especially since the $1297 model supports TB4 (thanks for figuring that out btw). Basically completely rules out gsync over USC-C DP compatibility. Although gsync can run over HDMI 2.1, the Nitro 5 only has HDMI 2 too -_-

I have returned the $1287 model (AN515-57-55R8) to HN and got the $1297 model (AN515-57-54ZA).
The $1297 model has a Thunderbolt 4 port but it comes with a crap Kingston memory (ACR32D4S2S1ME-8).
The $1287 model has a data only type C port (No Display Port) but it comes with a good Samsung 1Rx8 memory (M471A1K43EB1-CWE).
Thx for confirming differences. That's nice that they let you swap after opening the first item. However, a swap is reasonable considering that the product description on HM's site for the $1,287 item mentions Thunderbolt technology. What magic words did you use to swap it so easily?
I'm curious, could another difference be RTX 3060 Max-Q ($1287) vs Max-P ($1297)? HM's online chat could not advise me of the product difference, however, advised me that the $1297 item is the newer listing of the two. I find it odd that the newer listing has over 10 reviews left by purchasers and the older listing has none.
@unobtanium: The Max-Q reference is the older name for the lower TGP versions. They're no longer referred to in the RTX 30xx series because the power limit is just all over the place depending on what the manufacturer set it to. The Max-Q/P reference is more suitable for the 20xx series as you'd know exactly what the TGP is. Can't see "Max-P" though for the $1297?
Also where does it mention thunderbolt for the $1287 listing?

@unobtanium: Actually I tried mining on both models. No difference at all. Both GPUs runs on 95W and around 35 MH/s (without OC).
I got one of these on the last deal. Rate it. Battery isn't great but I'm not an all day user. You'll want to plug in to game anyway. Make sure you flash the vbios to unlock 95w TGP. Recommend also adding a ram stick so it runs in dual channel.
Recommend a 27" screen, keyboard and mouse, have the 1660ti playing on 1440p apex legends low settings 130fps

If you buy a gaming laptop it’s probably because you want one device to do both gaming duties and portable laptop duties. Why buy a gaming laptop if you also need a MacBook Air so you can work through the day.
it's a laptop you know, the word itself implies a sensible person would also want to use it on their lap, to type a couple of emails on the couch, or to browse ozbargain, or to watch a movie
so people do that, and they complain because battery life does suck in these scenarios. also they complain because gaming laptops with solid battery life actually exist, so there's that, too (not in this price segment though)
however it's ozbargain right? everyone should have like 20 smart devices at home (and a drawer full of eneloops, and a drawer full of crap freebies and SD cards), just check between couch pillows, sure there's an Aliexpress tablet you forgot about? just type emails or watch movies on that haha

Native is 35mh. If plugged with egpu the msi settings do not get u 42 for some reason. Not sure why. Stays at 35.
