You can get a comfy and warm jacket without down as the insulation. It's unnecessary, cruel, and unethical. I urge people to avoid it.

    • But if I already am going to eat the chicken I might as well not waste the down

      • -1

Down is its own industry and is full of exploitation. If people knew what was going on, I don't think many would support this. Macpac has the RDS certification for down, which is pretty much just a badge they market to make consumers to feel better about their decisions.

For example article A1 of their 3.0 Responsible Down Standard User Manual states:

"2. Chain of custody of down and feather materials from the source to the final product.
        • Documents track the materials through each stage in the supply chain to make sure that
products with down and feathers from RDS-certified farms can be identified."

        • It doesn't state that RDS certified companies cannot use down from non RDS certified suppliers or that this has to be declared.

Note below from their 2019 RDS Feedback Summary that stated :

“RDS Companies may choose to have their non-RDS sources reviewed for risk of live-plucking
or force-feeding.” There were 16 statements of general support (8 animal welfare groups, 9 brands) for the option
for suppliers to disclose their suppliers as a measure of demonstrating their due diligence to
prevent the purchase of live-plucked down or feather material or material purchased from forcefed birds.

Meaning, you can purchase RDS certified down that was from an animal that was force fed and had its feathers plucked out whilst it was still alive.

It took me two minutes to find this information on their website. There were also many other red flags and inconsistencies.

I just ask that people consider not contributing to this

    • +1

Can you please post a bargain for one of these jackets you mention? I already have 2 down jackets and am about to pull the trigger on this one as well. The clock is ticking…

      • -1

I think if you wanted to avoid suffering you could find a jacket pretty easily, champ

        • +1

Missed your window, champ… maybe next time post an ethically sourced jacket bargain of equivelant warmth and you might save more ducks from the chop

          • @smokenmirraz: I have nothing to do with your purchase decisions, if you want to needlessly hurt animals, that's on you. Atleast now you're willingly complicit, knowing that what you're doing is wrong. I hope that if you're ever on the other end of the stick, someone chooses to be more merciful on you than you are to others. Cheers

            • @UserNotaBotIPromise: Thanks for your concern. I think the forecast is for a wet and cool weekend so at least I'll be warm in my new jacket.

            • +1

@UserNotaBotIPromise: And here we have another internet warrior, perfectly happy to cry and judge others but not actually willing to do anything about it.
You had a REAL chance here to possibly do something and maybe make a real difference but you decided not to.
Instead you prance around on your high horse looking down on @smokenmirraz and offering no solution, only criticism.
You want people to be merciful to animals, but the people doing this stuff are usually in poorer countries and only trying to make a living. Giving a roof and food for their families. So you want us to choose animals over humans and a lot of people dont see it that way. If you really want to make a difference then go preach to the companies and governments that keep these people down so we can have economic slaves. Go and create another industry there so people can work and eat.
Your whinging on the internet serves no one but yourself.

              • @PAEz: Sure, internet warrior/cry baby. But I do actually live by these principles, so I do also do things about it, and asking others to do these things isn't hypocritical. I also posted how this down is also unethical after investigating. No one cared to challenge my claims or look into the company like I did. I presented this information to you all.

I decided not to help? I told you the messed up thing that was happening, it should hardly matter how I presented it.

I don't look down on smokerz. He was obviously baiting me, it wasn't thinly veiled. No one who cares about not hurting animals tells you to fetch him another deal on a jacket and "tic toc", time is running out, otherwise his choice to harm animals will be on me. I'm not as patient as Ghandi, I'm not going to give him the response he wants, I'm going to call him out. Why am I being held to a higher standard of accountability? Because I asked everyone to not hurt animals and presented the facts?

I'm not on a high horse. I'm not better than anyone, but i think I'm living in line with my principles and others are not. I doubt anyone here would hold a bird down and individually pull out their feathers, causing excruciating pain. But if you buy this, then you're paying someone else to do it. I'm not better than what I was before I was doing this and I think everyone else here is able to make decisions to reduce harm too, hence why I am trying to tell people about the exploitation.

People do horrible things all over Australia to animals within the industries. I'm not sure why you think we're so much better. I don't suppose you've seen a slaughter house, it's comparable to a wet market. Animals are killed within months of being born, the vast majority are within their infancy, like cows. RSPCA approves chicks being macertad day 1 of them being hatched. This is all because that's when it's cost effective. A huge number of what people eat anyway is imported too from other countries. These birds used for this jacket are also likely from these other countries.

The argument about jobs makes little sense, throughout history there have been horrible jobs. Just because it's a job now, doesn't mean it's correct or ethical.

Don't assume I put animals over humans. I don't. I think people shouldn't needlessly contribute to their harm. I think what goes on is hidden from most people and if they saw it or knew about it, they would change their minds.

  • Luckily I found a small in Blue as I went in-store to try size and order. Cashier was able to round it to 100 and give 20$ off as club member.

    It's a bargain at 79.99

I take it everyone here is THAT ignorant or just on the bottom spectrum of humanity with 0% care in the world about anything other than themselves??
Who in the right mind would buy any "DOWN" clothing let alone post and and share a link to it. jesus F !

If you want people to listen to what you have to say then dont insult them.

      • Not true, I politely asked people to avoid down and justified why it was unethical. I was mocked and down voted. I don't think your comment is right. People don't like to be reminded of the consequences of their actions, regardless of how it was delivered to them

    • Having roast chicken for dinner

    • Or at least post a bargain for an alternative jacket… let's go you've got till 10pm tonight till I pull the trigger on my third down jacket

    • +2

Lol. This joker—creates an account on a bargain hunting with the sole intent of screaming at randoms on the internet. To top it off, their handle is "BeBetter". Ok, thanks random angry person! I'll promptly change my ways.

    • +1

The fact that you have linked to PETA is enough for me to not take you seriously. Also, looks like you just created this account to post this. I would take you are one of those crazed PETA fanatics.

      • The down here is actually unethical though. Companies pay for the certificate of being ethical, but don't actually have to disclose the supply chain. I.e. these feathers are likely from animals that were force fed and endured live plucking.

        • +1

Zero. That's exactly the number of f**** I give. There are bigger problems in the world than to worry about chickens being plucked for some feathers.

          • @MassEffect: That's the impression I'm getting from this thread. I'm hoping you and others change your mind in the future. If we can reduce harm on others why shouldn't we?
            All the best

  • I know this probably isn’t the right post to be asking, but does anyone else know if the Mens Kathmandu Federate Bomber jacket runs large like the MacPac halo jackets do?

  • Damn even XS might be slightly big for me haha

  • Just got the L. I am a tall guy with long arms and this is one size too big. Should've gotten a M.

    • similar boat as you i got M and should have gotten S. Now have to figure our if they allow exchange/refund for online purchases by going into store
