I've been interested in DNA Geneology Tests for a while but Ancestry is $118.99AUD and 23andme is USD$130.89 for their Black Friday Holiday 'Sale'. I just ordered this today as its a bargain less than half of the alternatives.
The cheapest test and you can reupload the data free elsewhere:

    you had me at broden.
I'm thinking I'm a close relative, with similar shopping habits, but I guess this test is the only way to be certain :)
And I don't use bold anywhere near enough to be related to jv

Maybe you have the recessive gene in the family?

Are they gonna sell my data to insurance companies

How can they prohibit law enforcement from getting the info if it’s gone through correct channels (warrant etc).

No idea what they would want it for but I am sure they can’t just refuse.

        • +1

Services like GEDmatch will provide it willingly if just asked.
"We will not provide information to law enforcement unless we are required by a valid court order or subpoena for genetic information."

        • +2

They can't, unless they operate outside the jurisdiction of that police department. Given that this is a Israel company, that hopefully provides some insulation against police pressure. Still a risk though

        • Why you worried

          • -1

@FutureTech: PVA may find himself in a sticky situation in the future…

        • -1

I dunno why people are so worried about dna data collection and law enforcement. If anything it's a bonus.

          1. Do DNA test
          2. Commit crimes
          3. Used a fake name suckers!
          4. Watch your neighbour get arrested
          5. 12 hour headstart until the dumb cops look up from their donuts and notice he's plain white and not a blend of mongol+viking+roman+ottoman+3%african.
          6. Now they have to go back and test the rest of the 7billion (minus one) people on the planet before they find you
    • The companies own the data, say they can do with it what they want.

      • They only use it internally to suggest DNA matches and for internal research that is published anonymised

    • +1

According to a documentary I saw last week, if you submit your genetic data to these companies they are at risk of being hacked and your genetic data stolen by a global criminal group who intends to use the stolen data in a targeted DNA weapon. So be careful.

You've been watching too much Tom Cruise

      • everyone should be trying to minimise the number of databases they're in, DNA related or otherwise.

  • your third cousin is JV

I have more than three cousins…

  • According to my 30 second research on Google, it is recommended to buy 2 kits and get a close family member tested aswell to better triangulate the results for a more accurate reading.

    • +2

Yep, if you buy 2 kits you will get free shipping without a code and qualify for 4.2% Cashrewards cashback

Found out I was 93% horse. By deduction, I figured out any family member after me has to be an ass.

    • I am 35% daffodil!

    • You’re related to TA

    • Let me guess, ivermectin?

  • Have you tried the Animate family photos? Samples look really cool but I am wondering if it’s that good.

    • Great Niche to be in…..

    • Avatarify does the same thing?

      • Premium features cost $50+ a year

        • Screen record the live feature?

    • +1

Be prepared for some photos that turn out some very weird and creepy animations though.

    • +1

When something is free, remember you are the commodity

  • Buying myself and each of my parents one would be overkill right?

Would it be better to just buy myself one, or just get my parents tested and combine the results for myself and sibling's?

    • DNA is not passed equally between siblings, it would make a good gift for them

  • +1

There is a risk of NOT matching family members, which can ruin lives as well. So keep that in mind when gifting. Kind of like the opposite of buying someone a lottery ticket.

    • Wouldn't you want to know you are not genetically related to your family?

  • "MYHERITAGE HAS NEVER SOLD OR LICENSED GENETIC DATA OR HEALTH DATA, AND WILL NEVER DO SO IN THE FUTURE."

    TRUST US… 🙄

  • How many photos can you animate? So if we buy the DNA kit, we also get free photo animations? It looks like you need an ongoing subscription to get photo animations.

    • Oh sorry, its only free for me as I'm on Premium Trial I've removed it only 3 photos are free

  • Looking at the youtube review - it doesn't look very detailed.

    • This test might be more representative of mixed people: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZwkx2Ajq40
The girl in the review only had 2 ethnicities I picked her because she is Asian. It does show what time and generation the different ethnic group was introduced. It can be uploaded onto other databases too like 23mofang and GED match if you want a second opinion, thats the benefit is you can download your raw data.

  • I saw a greentext recently about someone who swabbed their lizard's saliva and it came back predominantly ashenazi jewish, then kenyan & mexican (or some similarly odd combo).

    • Haha had to google what a greentext is: It's a 4chan story

      • so therefore 100% true guaranteed, right ? :)

  • 3% Torres Strait islander!
    Are these legally accepted?

    • +1

One actually needs a DNA test to claim they're InDigEnOuS? to claim gibs?

      • +1

Nope, race is a social construct, therefore if you identify that way…

    • +2

      Name does not check out

  • Did not expire as shown.
It still worked this morning (Sunday 28th Nov) for 2 X $59 kits with free shipping.

  • Did anyone receive their kit yet? I need mine this week for an exchange gift. T.T
