Own these and this is a great price! If you can get the digital inputs into these, they sound incredible for the money.

    • Would these sound OK if hooked up to a bedroom TV via optical? No sub, just the speakers? Cheers

      • +3

Yup, I got these hooked up via optical to the main living room tv. Sound great imo. Also works great as a music system. They can go pretty loud too.

They come up with all different cables too, ready to go out of the box.

        • I've got two Google Home Max speakers set up for music, so this will be just for the TV :-) Thanks for the insight!

      • I'm not sure what it's like on newer TVs but my old LG 42LA6230 had terrible sound sync issues over optical. I tried using my s1000db as tv speakers and it was just too out if sync to live with (the 'sound sync' setting didn't have a wide enough range to get it corrected)

    • I have them too, incredible for the price.

Is there any reason why using optical/coax would be better quality than RCA for uncompressed stereo audio on these?

      • +1

Using a digital connector would in theory make sure you have the best signal reaching them as you can. RCA is analogue and susceptible to interference, noise and some degredation of signal.

Thing is the sound is only as good as the weakest link, so for stereo sound on $150 speakers you might see some improvement but not as much as using those connecters on $1000 speakers. Push comes to shove I'd always suggest using the best connection available as long as it's not ridiculous money for no gain, if you just need a $5 optical cable knock yourself out, if you're upgrading to a new piece of hardware just to use it I wouldn't spend the money just for that unless you were upgrading anyway.

        No.

      • I noticed an improvement with the optical/coax over the RCA using Apple lossless. Just sounded fuller and richer to me.

        • That's because RCA only transmits non-digital signals. Optical is digital.

          • @KangaDrew: You're never going to guess what happens when it gets to the speaker.

        • fuller and richer

The way confirmation bias works is sound equipment sounds better or worse, when you expect it to sound better or worse, when there's actually been no change.

Your brain is hopeless at measuring anything.

This is why double blind testing exists.

      • Optical definitely immune to power cable interferences, added benefit for me. I have a lot of devices on my desk and sometimes the power coil (from speakers or wireless charging pads) can interfere with signal.

I picked up these a while back and honestly for the money can't fault them for daily use on a computer and Chromecast audio. They seem to be a rebranded bestisan SR01 based on the style and the fact they have SR01 written on the back which gets well reviewed at a much higher price.

They are definitely not the same.

      • -1

Definitely not at that price, they aren't bad for less than half the price though for anyone after pc speakers or a set with optical/Bluetooth as an input and not wanting to spend $150.

  • Do I need amp for this +

  • Is it better than the R1700BT for TV usage? Ordered them yesterday :(

    • you will be happy with the 1700's, they are very well regarded and even recommended in the audiophile forums

      • -1

This makes no sense what so ever, a true audiophile would scoff at $150 speakers, the moniker audiophile is an elitist term for people who basically are clueless about sound reproduction, they're the same people who buy snake oil and think it does wonders.

        • +2

          Holy generalisation Batman!

  • Anyone able to comment, if these sound good at low volume listening (live in an apartment)? Be mainly used for outputting audio from the tv.

    • +2

Yeah these would be great for that, I use them plugged into my laptop. Powerful speakers but great at low volume too. They come with a remote too, which is handy

  • If I were to connect these to the TV via optical does the volume get controlled by the TV remote? Or does that only work for HDMI connections eg to a soundbar or amp?

Looking to replace my older soundbar but I want volume control by the TV remote…

    • +1

Only works via hdmi arc. You could just do 3.5mm

    • +2

Maybe not helpful, but I have them plugged into my TV via the headphone aux port. They are controlled by the tv sound that way. Still sound great too. Replaced the soundbar I had to do the same because I didn't want to muck around with two remotes.

    • +2

I'm not sure but I have these connected through rca and they can be adjusted by TV remote.

    • +1

The TV remote wouldn't control volume for either.
Using analogue out would result in loss of quality, and you may not get sound if the source is an HDMI device unless you use optical. Need to configure your tv to decode to PCM, as these speakers probably can't decode Dolby.

  • Yes these are great, better than 1700 and great for tv and multiple uses. Solid purchase.

  • Recommend these for anyone looking for something to use with their tv/pc. Has bluetooth if you want to use them while doing something in the other room & separate adjustable treble/bass controls. Also has a subwoofer-out if needed which I haven't tried, think they are fine without it.

  • -1

These may be too large for computer speakers particularly in small rooms.

Ideally you want to avoid reflection from close walls as this interferes with accuracy so 4" to 6" drivers may be more suitable.

    • -1

This is totally incorrect, these are a 4 inch driver, if anything they might not have enough bass range for some who want that extra bottom end,

  • Cant add this to cart or buy, anyone else facing the same issue?

  • The subwoofer-out isn't perfect on these although it does work. Definitely add one if you can to get a richer bass response (if that's what you want). Not the greatest test but you can view the differences here.

  • Same price on catch - with free click and collect @ Kmart and Target. Have also stacked with the following $15 off shopback detail: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/662861
    fingers crossed this is tracked.

Actually just purchased a pair from Centre Com for $169 and they are great - hooked up to PC right now. Purchasing second pair for second lounge TV.

    • They have gone up to $199 on Catch as well now. :-(

  • The deal is showing $199

    • yes, out of stock of the sale items already

  • What’s the difference between these and the 1850DB?

    • +1

BT 5.0, better remote and supposedly better audio quality.

  • Damn out of stock

  • Anyone seen anything for the s350db or s3000s?

  • Didn't get around to buying these earlier today for $153 and when I went to buy them tonight they are now $139. Cheapest price ever I believe (someone else can post it as a new deal if it deserves that).
