cracker speakers, horrid colour unless you have an all white setup.

    • +17

I actually emailed them and asked for black at this price and they said no

      • +20

This is why the white one is cheaper lol

      • +5

        we appreciate the effort Mitchell

      • they said no

        Ouch

      • +4

lmao i'm imagining their reply being literally just "no"

      • remember 50 no's and a yes is still a yes, keep trying

    • +2

Horrible would be black set up. Can see the dust on it a mile away

  • +9

Mate of mine vinyl wrapped the white in carbon fiber; these are very good entry level monitors.
I have a set of black, and my personal opinion is that they're a good monitor choice.
While many people seem to suggest 'flat is best', the other thought is that 95% of your audience arent listening through 'flat' tuned systems; ergo, these 'lightly coloured' sound signature monitors are going to create mixes slightly closer to what 95% of your audience is going to hear when playing back.

Loaded topic of discussion though, so ymmv.

    • Hopefully they are fine for listening to YouTube and some gaming, Maybe connect the dj deck in my small room at low levels. I have realistic expectations obviously they wont be like my old krk rokits

      • +2

Honestly, they're more like the Rokits than you'd expect.
Smaller drivers, and lower power amp, so don't expect the same volume, but honestly? They're easily… i dunno… 66%-ish of what the rokits of a similar size can do.

I'm mixing in a 4x6 room, and I can get them loud enough they're uncomfortable. I don't think you'll be disapointed.

    • +1

Oh yeah this is def a loaded topic.

"Flat" is only need for reference sets for mastering purposes.

Anything for the consumer is irrelevant and can be changed with an EQ anyways

      • +1

"Flat" is only need for reference sets for mastering purposes.

Thats the loaded bit right there: Why master something in a way the audience is never going to hear it?
Usually the answer is so the output is as 'pure' as can be, for remixes or further editing.
But… what if you're 'finished' and it's ready to go live?

I'm on the 'give it some flavour' bandwagon (but never used to be, because I was stuck in the "This is correct tuning" rigid mindset).
It happened after I noticed that nobody I knew played music that sounded 'right', after I mixed it flat.
These days, everyone pumps the bass; and your only guesswork is if they scoop or pump the mids.
        Thats my 2c anyway.

        • +1

Flat responses are used for mixing/mastering so you don't end up missing something because it was audibly "tucked away". Most modern stuff removes some mids, if you mixed/mastered on something with less mids there's a chance you wouldn't catch something which shouldn't be there/reduced.

        • +1

Honestly I think its just for uniformity across all media formats - standardise the output so that everything is mastered off the same base

    • Ha yeah - I found my Audioengine A5+s (like decade old now) are pretty… hmm, not flat but also not particularly exciting. Added a SW150 Wharfdale sub years ago but sold it due to renting/making moving easier - now they're hooked up to an Ifi Zen Dac and I've got 'Truebass' punched in so they're just a touch more 'fun' without needing the sub.

I find flat frequencies boring ha. I love my SRH 1840s but damn theyre boring compared to my Hifiman Edition XS.

  • +2

Paired mine with a Presonus Sub.

Couldnt be happier for a desktop setup.

  • Is the MR3 a better one to this? It also has the bluetooth connection.

    • +1

Without hearing either, i done alot of research last night. The general consensus is that the MR3 are better, Newer, equally good sound despite being a bit smaller, bluetooth, can connect to the app for tuning etc. I just decided to get these because they are about $70 cheaper atm

    • +1

I had both MR4 and MR3 at different times. Personally I prefer the MR4, it had a slightly bigger woofer and it sounded better with more bass. Unless you want/need Bluetooth, I’d go for the MR4. I even used the app EQ on the MR3 but you just can’t defy physics. My 2c.

      • +1

Haven’t tried it but u could (probably) use a fiio btr11 for like $15 that can convert 3.5mm to Bluetooth

  • Good speaker for the price, although my right speaker has developed an intermittent crackle at 80% volume. Also they occasionally get a buzz, depending on what else is going on on the same circuit

  • Defo need a sub with these imho. They just don’t go low enough.

    • +1

I think it would imbalance them, would need to be a very small sub. As desktop speakers go, 60cm away from your head, they do great without a sub IMO. I have my ones going through a fosi amp which amps the bass up a bit

  • Edifier S350DB > This

    • +2

over 3x the price i would hope its better

      • They're also not.

They're 'nicer' as a listener, but for a studio monitor they're wildly EQ'd.

  • +2

How do these compare to my r1280db?

    • horses for courses… depends what you want.

  • Was looking at these and even the new mr5s which i am not sure if theyre even coming still to Australia but went all in for a better quality minimal setup so I wouldnt need a sub. In the end, went with Kanto Ora4 lol. Totally different pricepoint I know but I have read too many qc issues with edifier so I upped my budget. Pretty happy. A step down between Ora4 and but better than these edifier ones would be the Fiio SA1. Great reviews too but not feeling the looks of em.

    Not to mention the

4 Wooper Dual Mode RCA Output

    I love a good sounding wooper !
    😊

  • +1

Honestly I went to this deal to check out some cheap speakers that probably won't be used much, but I ended up looking at and purchasing this one on their website:
    https://www.centrecom.com.au/edifier-r1700bt-studio-20-bluet… ($149)

And it came with a free little portable bluetooth speaker, pretty nifty I guess.

    • I love these speakers. For the price, they sound great and very hard to find anything that is better.
I gave mine to my parents as they were too big for my desktop setup. They sound great with their 65-inch TV, even without a sub. I ended up buying the Edifier e25HD, which looks great, but doesn't sound as good as the R1700BT.

      • Would you need a sub for the r1700bt above, for a desktop?
