  • NB. this is a crossover cable not a straight patch cable

    • +2

yeah i know, but with modern network equipment that doesn't matter anymore.

      • Are you saying you can connect a router, and computer with a crossover cable?

        • +3

          yes

        • +1

no you don't, and no he's not thinking of that at all

    • My understanding was that all Network cards are smart enough to work without crossover cables, making this useless.

(tho i dont know much, they probably have other uses)

      • +3

I don't know about network cards, but the routers have automatic polarity.

This makes crossover cables less necessary, but more useful.

      • +3

its called auto-sensing technology. Check your router first but you can always re-crimp the cable to a straight through just google it. I mean if you're really cheap and don't mind putting in the effort to save a few dollars like a true OZbargainer.

    • +1

      no it's not.

    • +3

It says "patch cable" in the title so pretty sure it is. The description just seems to be a copy & paste generic one describing both types of cable.

      • patch cable merely means its for connecting two devices in close proximity rather than in say seperate rooms or buildings.

    • +2

Connect two 10m crossover cables together with an RJ45 to RJ45 connector to get a 20m straight thru cable.

    • I was thinking there were two types on offer, straight and crossover, but there seems to be no choice of type after putting the item into the cart, so this catalogue item is really strange. Not to mention the 100Mb thingy. But since crossover will work with modern routers, and it's only $1.73, I have placed a backorder and we'll see what happens. Worth it for the entertainment if nothing else.

      • +2

I can confirm it was a pricing error but orders placed at the time will be honoured. Cheers.

  • +2

I thought cat6 was supposed to be capable of 1000Mbps…

    • According to the networks department at my work, Cat5e is capable of 1000Mbps (or 1Gbps) and Cat6 is capable of 10Gbps.

      • Over short distances, yeah…

(thanks for the post - I ordered a few :))

      • Yeah, so I'm just wondering why the product description says:

"Data transmission rated up to 100Mbps."

    • -1

      Yeah I read that too.
Data transmission rated up to 100Mbps.
      I call bs… Cat6 = Gigabit.

  • I'm confused…so is this cable used for connecting a PC to a modem/router?

Also can I buy it in Sydney if I choose pickup? or is this a QLD only thing?

    • +4

yes you can use it for connecting for pc to modem/router/switch or pc to pc… either way you use it, it will work. all network cables do the same unless your using obsolete network equipment that isn't capable of detecting which cable its using.

Edit: its only for QLD delivery as it states on the website.

  • $25.95 delivery for me… out to 4870….
    $5.95 delivery to 4000 as well…

    • its free if you select the pickup from store option.

  • they are coming up as back order when trying to order, any idea of how long they take to get stock?

    • The backorder invoice shows 3 Apr as the expected delivery date. But I'll bet they will not be able to fulfill the order and have to refund my money. If not, I will be pleasantly surprised.

  • +2

bought 10 to pick up at my local officeworks (in VIC) will be interesting to see when they rock up.

    • no idea why someone neg'd your comment.
btw, if you were wiring up a house you'd be able to just cut the crimped ends off and wire this to a socket, couldn't you?
cos this is way cheaper than buying Cat6 by the metre.

      • yes. provided you dont need longer than 10m to connect the socket to the router.

      • yea i don't know why, i have no intention of selling them, i gotta wire up a couple rooms in my house which i have been putting off, this is exactly my plan. Plus there handy to have for LANs

        • just remember that over short distances both cat 5e and cat 6e are capable of doing 1gbps. its only over the long distances that cat 6e will be beneficial. In saying that at this price i say its a no-brainer

      • Normally you'd wire a house in solid conductor, bacause it can be punched down into the sockets.

This will be stranded cable, so you can't get a reliable connection to a normal RJ45 socket.

        • Llama is correct, krone (and imitators) punchdown wall sockets are designed for solid-core cable.

        • Ahh, thanks.
So when you buy it by the metre from Jaycar, Middy's or whoever, they sell you solid core, but when you buy patch cables they're (always?) stranded core?
Sorry if this is a dumb question.

        • multi stranded cable is more flexible so you will find it in patch cables. solid core is normally used in fixed installations.

        • legiong, cable bought by the meter from an electronics store or electrical wholesaler is USUALLY solid core, but some suppliers have both. Jaycar have both for cat5e - WB2020 is stranded, WB2022 is solid.

The cable where each wire has stranded cores is generally referred to as "patch" cable, because it is only used for patch leads, i.e. the lead between your PC and the wall socket. You can get RJ45 connectors to suit either stranded or solid core cable, make sure you get the right type, and also make sure you aren't buying an RJ45 connector for flat 8-core telephone cable (the cable clamp will look different).

Patch cable is generally much harder to find than solid core cable, and usually more expensive. Cat6 patch cable is particularly rare.

Pre-made patch leads are almost always made from the stranded wire. If you look at the end of the RJ45 connector with a magnifying glass, you should be able to see whether the cable used has stranded or solid core wires.

    • LOL, good one!

  • Thanks OP, will be great if it works out. I've placed an order which also came up as on backorder - so I'm expecting an email saying sorry they are sold out and no more, but will be happily surprised if I do get them.

  • only available on back order. they aren't going to be able to supply them.

    $6 each at msy

Ordered 20 for instore pickup NSW, Thanks OP

    • i just bit confuse it said online only, but you have the option to pick up from your local store that outside Queensland.

      • I'm confused too.

"Online Only" probably refers to the price and/or not being stocked in stores.

"Stock only available for delivery in Queensland" can be interpreted a number of ways.

I've placed an order for in-store pickup outside QLD, let's hope for the best.

  • So this can't be used to connect my ps3 Xbox bluray player etc to my network??

    • -1

if its cross over then probably not. unless u decide to cut the cable and re crimp it

      • I don't think it's a cross-over cable. The description describes both patch and cross-over for clarity but just makes it more confusing. The item description says patch cable.

      • +1

        Who negs this stuff?

  • Take that Staples! QLD wins this time!

  • Is the speed rating of "up to 100mbps" correct? I thought cat6 cables were supposed to be capable of 1000mbps for gigabit connections.

    • +1

I think even 5e is capable of gigabit. But 6 is a higher spec when it comes to shielding etc, so even on a short 100mbps link inevitably winding past power cables etc it may be beneficial.

      • Loopylou is right, here's some more detailed info. There are two limitations to ethernet cables:
        - how quickly the signal is attenuated
        - how much signal gets coupled from one pair to the next

Signal attenuation is mainly down to the plastic the insulation is made from, and what is within a few millimeters of the cable. For example, a clip-on ferrite bead will probably wreck the data transmission capability of the cable.

How much signal gets coupled from one pair to the next is mostly affected by the separation of the cables (the twist ratio plays a part too). In cat6 cables, there is a cross-shaped plastic separator inside the cable, to ensure the pairs stay at least 1mm apart.

Cat5e cable is capable of gigabit, and cat 6 cable can do 10 gigabit. The maximum run length for either type of cable is considered to be about 100 meters, but you may be able to get more distance if you run 1 gigabit over cat6 cable compared to cat5e cable.

In general, it's just like Loopylou said: cat 6 is better quality than cat5 or cat 5e. However cat6 gives you the option of upgrading to 10 gigabit when the equipment becomes more affordable, which is an important consideration if you are wiring a building.

        • I was just wondering why the product description (which is no longer available) said that the data transmission was rated "up to 100mbps". Shouldn't it be capable of more than that?

  • Pure win - thanks OP

  • Sounds like yet another 'no longer stocked' deal - appears on OW system at crazy price, you pay but get back-order email, and it never arrives… still I backordered some.

    • +2

Spot on mate, error with pricing. But will honour the orders that were placed at the time. Cheers

  • +1

must be removed from site, cant find it now…

  • +2

Mine was on backorder, but it just got delivered to me. Quickest backorder ever!

    • That was quick! My guess is your pickup store has stock.
What time did you order & which store??

      • +1

Sometime on Saturday, closest store probably Lutwyche.

  • anyone received theirs?

    • +1

Still sitting in backorder. In NSW BTW.

    • +1

      still backorder in Brisbane. :((

    • Still waiting

    • i just checked now and my order has gone from 'open' to 'completed' so i assume they are now ready for pickup!

    • Mine still says "Order Received" at Upper MtGravatt

      • don't look at 'check delivery status' - click on the order number. i think it is for delivery only.

        • Thanks for that! Also says "Completed".

    • Got mine last week. Browns Plains QLD

    • Mine says status "Open".

      Wuh?

    • +1

they called me today to pick it up
      oxley QLD

      • just got my call for pick up :D

        • My delivery status just changed to "order received" and the status when you click on the order is "Completed". Hope that means they've got it.

    • Just picked up mine from Taylors Lakes VIC.

      • Picked mine up today as well (VIC).

  • I was on back order and then i chased it up and they say no more stock, i wont get them. so all i can get is a refund.

    what a crock of shit.

  • Has anyone outside of QLD been able to pickup their order?

    • +1

I am in NSW and you will not get your order because these are classed as "End of Line" items and they wont get any more.

So I suggest call them so you can get your refund.

      • Was waiting until the end of the week to chase this up but it seems I might get my order after all. Just got an email of the orders tax invoice which seems to indicate they have shipped it today to my local OW.

        • Mine now says "completed" - what does that mean?

        • Not sure what "completed" means as I checked out with PayPal and not an account. They called me just before I picked my order up so I'm guessing they will do the same for you. This snippet was also on the very bottom of the initial order confirmation I received:

"You have nominated to pick up your order in store; a team member from your nominated store will contact you via telephone when your order is ready to be collected. Please bring a valid photo ID and your order confirmation to collect your order in store."

        • completed + invoice means it got dispatched from supplier or warehouse to your local office works for pick up. it will take a couple of days to arrive at your office works.

        • Mine has been "completed" for 12 days.
Received a posted tax invoice with "Quantity suppled: 2" & "item on Back Order", but no sign of cables???

        • how many did you order? maybe they are still trying to round some up

i ordered 6, order was completed on 13/4 and i got an invoice saying 6 ordered + 6 supplied. i finally got around to picking them up yesterday.

        • Thanks mattgal - ordered 2. Order completed 13/4. But no message to pick up. (Never ordered from OW before.)

        • Best bet is to prob chase it up yourself by calling them. I got my tax invoice by email the day before it was ready to pickup.

Seeing as you're from QLD I would assume your order would have been fulfilled before interstate orders (going by other comments). I'm in VIC and got my order on the 18/4.

        • it might pay to phone mt gravatt office works and check if they are available for pick up.

        • Thanks - will ring tomorrow.

    • Picked up @ regional VIC today 20.04.2012.

  • +1

Picked up Upper Mt Gravatt (Brissie) today 27.04.2012.
They said would notify when ready to pick up, but never happened. So was sitting in the store for 2 weeks.
Pretty good deal considering the 3m is $7 dearer! (same Comsol RJ45 Cat6 patch cable)

    • Thanks for that tip. My order's still "Open" so no point contacting the shop yet (ever?).

      • The same thing happened to me - but they had called the number paypal reported…

Which was a landline I had about 5 years ago!

If you get an email with an invoice, and a dispatch date - your local store should have it in the next day or two.

  • picked up mine today - in Sydney

  • +1

Finally got an invoice in the post, and my Officeworks page shows order Completed so I guess I can go collect tomorrow.

Kudos to Officeworks for honouring the deal, even though they probably lost money shipping the item to the store and posting me an invoice.
