I still can't believe I am saying this but it is available for delivery from the apple store. The cheapest optical cable by Belkin I came across so far.

Sorry, but all optical audio cables are the same, at least with regard to sound quality. This cable is overpriced and you can pick up cheaper alternatives from just about anywhere. From eBay, you're looking at under $5 delivered for the same cable.

        Yup. Belkin is a ripoff

Belkin is not bad actually, certainly not a valid reason for negging

        • belkin is not a bad brand but with this product it is…. transmission of light is either on or off. More money =/= better quality.

    • Although this post is about the belkin cable not the technology but here you go:

Several types of fiber can be used for TOSLINK: inexpensive 1 mm plastic optical fiber, higher-quality multistrand plastic optical fibers, or quartz glass optical fibers, depending on the desired bandwidth and application. TOSLINK cables are usually limited to 5 meters in length, with a technical maximum[1] of 10 meters, for reliable transmission without the use of a signal booster or a repeater. However, it is very common for interfaces on newer consumer electronics (satellite receivers and PCs with optical outputs) to easily run over 30 meters on even low-cost ($0.75/m) TOSLINK cables. TOSLINK transmitters operate at a nominal optical wavelength of 650 nm(~461.2 THz).

Bandwidth can be 10 MHz with high-purity quartz fiber, but 5 to 6 MHz for a cheaper plastic cable.[5]

Complete ripoff. Don't need to explain why

I just bought one… from ebay…. 2 days ago, $6 delivered from Sydney, 1.5M and that wasn't even the cheapest one available. Its the old debate of Monster vs Generic cable… its like comparing water, which one is wetter they are both water, I would only disagree on HDMI cables as there are different versions, cheaper cables don't do 1080P but an optical cable, nope same thing.

I've bought the cheapest HDMI cables you can find and have always been able to play 1080p content without a glitch. Over longer cable runs the connection can break-up but it's not likely to be a concern at under 5 meters. Understand with HDMI v1.4 there is ARC and Ethernet Channel but even the cheapest cables include these now.

agreed ripoff - never had any issues with any cheap ebay optical cables I have bought.
