Alright you can give me your email address so that i can write you back once am through at work now Okay ..

Got this email:
Oh am on business trip now i will not be able to come and see it I'm okay with the price, am purchase it as a surprise gift but payment method if you have a PayPal account please get back to me with your PayPal email address so that i can proceed with the payment if you don't have a PayPal account you can get back to me with your BSB and Account Number, as soon as the payment make i will email then you will help me post it through via Australia post, i will also add postage fee to your price…
Awaiting your response…

This feels a lot like a scam, business trip instead of Oil rig…
But how do they scam your money if you are protected by Paypal or Bank Transfer?

maybe for fun, and at a cost of a few dollars.
Mail them something. Give them a tracking number. See what happens next!

What if the cash is fake

    • Possession or use of counterfeit money is a serious crime, the scammer risks a decade in jail if they go down that path.

      • Not unless they manage to pass it on to the seller and disappear.

        • Still a serious risk, 10 years jail is a pretty solid deterrent.

There is basically zero risk with all these online scams, that's why they are so popular with scammers.

  • Meet up face to face is the lowest risk but still need to be cautious if you are selling high value items.

Asking me for "email" and "paypal" on GT = Immediate Block. I used to politely ask to not contact me outside GT but invariably they disappear.

On related topic, I'm selling something on GT for a few hundreds. It's faulty but still valuable enough to be targeted. So I got the following Whatsapp message (first red flag):
They: what is the condition of the item?
(Issue is clearly described in the ad, along with pics and reason for selling. Could be scam, could just be too dumb to read so I replied)

Me: It's described in the ad. Which specific part do you need clarification on?

They: what is reason for selling?
(Made up my mind either tyre kicker or scammer but I'll play along)

Me: What does it say in the ad?

They: OK. I'm ready to arrange courier.
(Facepalm, LOL and block in one second)

  • Funny enough, while I was sleeping I received an SMS with a verification code from PayPal.

I contacted them and they said they never sent anything and no one has tried to log into my account, but the SMS didn't contain any links so I have no idea what kind of systems the scammers have in place. 😬😬😬

Levity, I trust this man, Tightbungholio, with my life. You should definitely sell to him.

  • Will pay 150 to cover shipping cost

    Cash only. Nothing else matters.

    Mail them some dried shit.

    • I doubt it will get that far. They will "accidentally" over pay with a fake PayPal invoice and will ask for a partial refund

  • Gumtree = cash only

    Confiscate OPs ozbargain licence

    • I've sold a few items over $500 to people that do an instant transfer in person and I get the money in my account. I guess I've just been lucky that I haven't been scammed? Although I didn't get any dodgy vibes from these people and I guess it worked out?

      • +1

In person transfer is far less likely to be a scam, but still be cautious for high value items.

  • I get them all the time, my standard answer cash only on pick up no other payment method sorry and they all gone quiet, sometimes I don't bother reply to such message

  • if you are proceeding do bank transfer and wait for funds to be clear.

I have a similar kind of situation both the buyer and Ithe seller were afraid either of us is scammer. So we agreed to list it on ebay and he bid and pay for it. Took a hit for seller fee but at least there is some protection there.

Since Blockchain is so famous now why not just transact by bitcoins? I don't think it can be chargeback.

Yes, xlm or nano are pretty fast and cheap

Just a FYI for next time you can do 2 free listings from Gumtree to eBay per month (30c fee Total) if you haven't already used them ofc.

  • Nah she'll be right.

  • I'm willing to post them stuff if you like via Fedex. Happy to place a letter in there to the woman that lives there also as it's likely she's being scammed.

Cavender, Cynthia Ann was born 19 January 1965, is female, registered as Republican Party of Florida, residing at 251 Patterson Rd, Lot G-20, Haines City, Florida 33844. So it's a legit person might be being used for identity theft.

Scammer created a fake Facebook in the last few weeks also:

It was always going to be a scam it was just a matter of which one. Fake invoice/not as described/stolen Paypal account/every other one or a combination.
Ended up being fake invoice and please send item to a person likely in a romance scam.

As soon as they ask for a contact email address that is when ties should be cut as there is no reason why they should be needed.
Since they wont be getting the phone/item you will likely get fake login pages for Paypal and or your bank if you gave out that info on a regular basis as a thank you note. Which is why if you plan on doing something like this don't give them a regularly used email address. Hopefully you didn't OP? :)
As they don't give up that easily they will try other scams to see if you fall for those.

  • The only safe way is pay ID… there is no processing time the money is in your account right away and the money is sent to an email address.

Also.. the above is a scam. Move on to the next buyer.. Lol.. i sold a phone on guntree i met the person they gave me cash..

Not always. Your bank may put a hold on a new deposit you make. Happened to me with CBA for 24 hours.

  • Business trip? Sure, lots of people are travelling for business a week before Christmas during a pandemic….

  • I am interested in those votes of "not a scam", I think these people are vulnerable of next attack.I hope OZB can notify them and make them aware of it.

    • Some reacted before I confirmed it was a scam, some bank transfer or paypal requests on Gumtree are legit

      • It was clearly a scam though, based on that initial email you posted, no doubt at all.

  • Why has no one suggested?
Ask them to Western Union the $$

  • Now the trick is to email the scammer, tell them you have tried to ship it but are short on cash as PayPal hasn't released the funds, but the dude at the shipping service has told you he can ship it for a $50 apple gift card, and can the scammer help you out with that to get it over the line…

I'd only ever consider trying this if they had none if my details though…
