Stolen Parcel from Apartment, What to Do?

Parcel was delivered at my apartment and 30 minutes later it vanished when I went down to collect it. I saw the delivery man and buzzed him into the lobby myself.

I filed a complaint with the seller and they have escalated to Auspost for an investigation but it has been over a month now and no word from Auspost or the seller. Item value is about $150.

What should I do?

Thanks for the sanity check OzB, I have decided to cop it on the chin.

So parcel was stolen after you knew it was delivered in your building?

It's none of the options, it's a "you" problem, maybe police if you really wanna push it over $150.

    AusPost delivered the parcel.

  • +9

You buzzed them in but didn't go down right away?

Where did the driver leave the parcel before it was "stolen"?

      • +13

Clearly not secure then? Is there CCTV to see who took it? Was it someone in the building? Does the tracking have a photo?

Are you suggesting maybe the delivery person took it?

There's no such thing as a secure lobby.

Your neighbours aren't your friends, for one. They could steal it.

Second of all, most of these have doors that are left ajar or someone can easily follow someone else in.

TBH this is on you, you left it there for half an hour rather than collecting it immediately. I wouldn't be bothering the seller with this, since it's not their fault.

Quit blaming everyone but yourself, you literally saw the post man but decided to wait 30 minutes before getting it that's on you.

    • +3

I have to agree partially. I had a porch pirate rock up at my door within 30 seconds of a parcel being dropped and when asked if he needed help he said 'No, wrong house'….

I wouldn't wait 30 minutes after buzzing him in. If you couldn't get to the parcel right away he would have left a card…

I am struggling to find out how any of those third parties are to blame? The seller isn't to blame, the postman delivered the goods so they're not to blame - you're a junk person if you use credit charge back for this.

        • +7

Charge back will fail as sell can provide proof of delivery

        • +3

Explain how any of this is the sellers or Australia Post's fault?

      • +3

I’m happy to cop it but he left it in the secured lobby

Your issue isn't the sellers or auspost, as they both did their jobs.

It appears your 'secured' lobby isn't that secure after all and should be looking within your building for the solution.

must look into those parcel lockers. Dont need patio pirates

    • +1

      Will look into this, thanks.

    • +1

The worst is sellers that don't deliver to them / the post office.

  • +3

OP's Looking for Good Startup Ideas

How about something that collects and secures your parcel immediately?

    • -1

So a parcel locker or a post office?

  • +12

What kinda poll options are that, none of them put you at fault, which it is. Who leaves a $150 parcel out in the open for 30 mins at an 'easily accessible to many people' area. Nothing to do with Auspost as well. Move to a better place as another option coz you got some sticky fingers neighbours.

    • -7

If someone stole something in your property but left in the open, whose fault is it?

      • +12

The person who stole it, and if I KNEW it was there but was too lazy to get IT for 30 mins, then partly mine too.

So, not the seller, not Auspost.

I bet if the postie carded you because you weren't physically present, this forum post will be "postie took my parcel back to PO even though I beeped him in, OUTRAGEOUS"

        Yours

Left inside the lobby where you need an access key card to get in. People usually leave their parcels here.

    • +5

It is not just residents who gain access to the lobby via their access key card; there are visitors, contractors, tradies, couriers and others who also access the lobby after they have been buzzed in (similar to how you buzzed in your delivery person). Not so secure then, is it? Also, is it possible that a resident from your apartment may have (un)knowingly taken it?

  • +4

For an item of that value i'm watching the tracking like a hawk and picking it up from the front asap.

  • +7

Haha, is this actually serious? This isn't ausposts fault, or the sellers. Item was delivered to you. You didn't get it from inside your building, after it was delivered, and it was stolen. It is your problem.

If its a secure lobby, then there is likely cameras / security.
Check with the building security for footage to see who was in the area at the time.

Otherwise as others have stated, none of the above.

    • -1

Sadly no cameras in the lobby.

      • +8

Well that is not a secured lobby. That is just a lobby.

      • then what is so 'secure' about it if it doesn't even have cameras.

      • If it's an apartment building, then it seems very strange there would not be a camera in the lobby.
It's the route that most people come in / out of the building.

This (getting a security camera installed in the lobby) is something that you should follow up with the Owners Corporation for the apartment building, since there are clearly some security concerns with the building.

You should report it to the police, and that's about all that can be done for it.

where's the option for "cop the loss sweet on the chin", because that's what you're facing

  • +2

    It's definitely someone else's fault.

    ..

No, of course it's not; I just wanted to hear how it would sound saying it out loud. It's all on you, boo.

  • +2

Why didn't you just go down and pick it up from them yourself?

  • Your poll options aren't suitable because there's no option where you take responsibility for your own naivety.

  • +1

Its your fault for leaving it 30 minutes in the lobby, anyone could take it
Take it on the chin its nobody elses fault

  • -3

This poll is like the ones sent by Donald Trump when he was president!

  • I hate these posts. All my negs used up in one single scroll!!!

    Option 4 [#]
    - Work on self awareness
    - Don’t blame others for my mistakes in judgement
    - Apologise to the seller & postie I unfairly harassed
    - Get a parcel box
    - Don’t have parcels sent to “unsecured” lobby
    - Have a nice Christmas

  • Boil an egg.

  • Was the package marked as "Signature Required" or as "can be left unattended"?

    • Correct me if I'm wrong: recently I learnt AusPost standard process on handling parcel unattended is to make sure the place they drop is safe, if it's not safe they will still leave card. Op has removed his or her original story thus I won't know the details. If op didn't get notify via intercom, and driver to drop parcel inside locked lobby it is still counted as not safe.

Recently ihad almost similar situation. A driver drop parcel right there in front of garage where it can be seen from street. I knew he was there from camera but will do half hour later then a lady came and took the big box from big w. I know it's not safe drop, but this driver know where I mostly want the parcel to be dropped thus I didn't claim anything and just absorb the loses. Told the same driver later to not drop it in same spot if he didn't see me when he drop it.
