  • ALIEN: In space no one can hear you scream. Alien is the first chapter in one of the most popular and terrifying sagas in science fiction history. The nightmare begins when the crew of a spaceship investigate a transmission from a desolate planet, and discover a life form that is perfectly evolved to annihilate mankind. Sigourney Weaver stars as the iron willed Ripley, who is destined to battle the galaxy's ultimate creature.

  • ALIENS: In this action-packed sequel to Alien, Sigourney Weaver returns as Ripley, the only survivor from mankind's first encounter with the monstrous Alien. Her account of the Alien and the fate of her crew are received with scepticism—until the mysterious disappearance of colonists on LV-426 lead her to join a team of high-tech colonial marines sent in to investigate.

  • ALIEN 3: This time it's hiding in the most terrifying place of all Lt Ripley is the lone survivor when her crippled spaceship crash lands on Florina 161, a bleak wasteland inhabited by former inmates of the planet's maximum security prison. Ripley's fears that an alien was on board her craft are confirmed when the mutilated bodies of ex-cons begin to mount. Without weapons or modern technology of any kind, Ripley must lead the men into battle against the terrifying creature. And soon she discovers a horrifying fact about her link with the alien, a realisation that may compel her into a final, desperate act.

  • ALIEN RESSURECTION: 200 years have passed since Ripley made the ultimate sacrifice in Fiorina 161. But over the years, and after seven horrific failures, scientists have finally cloned a perfect replica of Ripley, which includes the alien Queen growing insider her at the time of her death. But this new breed of alien is far more intelligent than its predecessors a fact the scientists don't realise until after The Betty has arrived with additional human hosts.

  • PROMETHEUS: A team of scientists and explorers journey to the darkest corners of the universe searching for the origins of mankind. But what they find could threaten all life on Earth, leading to a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race!

  • ALIEN: COVENANT: Alien: Covenant, the second chapter in a prequel trilogy that began with Prometheus—and connects directly to Ridley Scott's 1979 seminal work of science fiction. Bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, the crew of the colony ship Covenant discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world—whose sole inhabitant is the "synthetic" David (Michael Fassbender), survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition.

6? I thought theres only 2 alien films.

    • How exciting? Now you can watch the rest of movies this Christmas. Yeah all are there on Disney+.

      • +8

Why yes, as long as you pay $11.99 per month (or $120 per year) for the rest of your entire life, you will be able to avoid the outrageous price of $16.49 for this boxset and own it… forever.

PHEW!!! Can't call me stupid, no sir…

        • +4

You sound like me when I bought the Star Wars Special Edition on VHS

          I was wrong as well

          • +4

@GrueHunter: There likely won't be any physical media beyond Blu-Ray, I like having these on the shelves and it's nostalgic putting it in when the NBN is down.

            • +4

@Jimbuscus: Yeah, I agree with you there. There will eventually be 8k players and discs, maybe in the next 4 years or so. Someone will probably tell me that they are out now or later this year but how long will it take for A) the price to be reasonable ? B) the films themselves to be made in 8k ? Added to which - for me at least - you would need at least an 85 inch TV to justify upgrading to an 8k TV.

The ability for current TVs to upgrade Blu-Ray to 4K is sufficient for most people and the price for 4k TVs is about a 1/3 of what it was 4 - 5 years ago, making it even harder to justify upgrading to 8k for the majority of people.

Arguments for 4k discs are more relevant. But technically 4k is still called a Blu-Ray disc. 4k discs are far superior to any streaming services out there due to the limits of bit rates being streamed. This applies to both the picture and the audio quality, even more so if you have a Dolby Atmos / DTS X set up.

              • @omblygombly: Yeah. With the increasing shortage of materials, I don't see physical mediums continuing or increasing in popularity again. Although perhaps it's just our broadband-entitled first worlds who may share this viewpoint.

              • @omblygombly: I have been getting either 4K discs or regular BluRay depending on the price, compression has made regular Blu-Ray's pretty good as well.

          • +2

@GrueHunter: My mum still has VHS tapes, what are you trying to tell me ? ;) At least you didn't buy Betamax.

            • @omblygombly: A good nic VHS of a popular movie would be a nice collectors item now, I've been seeing many PS2 games go for hundreds.

          • @GrueHunter: Funny you mention star wars because buying/streaming star was now is hard to avoid the remastered versions.

        • Wow. I simply meant Disney+ being an alternate provider right now. This deal is a deal. But for those who aren’t purchasing this, Disney+ is an option if they have subscription already. Or maybe get free trial and finish those.

      • Silly question - but would the sound quality (and picture) be better on bluray than Disney+. Assuming you have a decent 5.1 setup.

        • +2

For sure. The audio tracks come in DTS-HD MA format on the Blu-ray, which is lossless and much higher bitrate than the lossy Dolby Digital Plus used on Disney+ and most other streaming services.

With picture quality, just using the first film as an example the Blu-ray has an average bitrate of about 26Mbps whereas on Disney+ you're looking at something closer to 6Mbps.

Whether you notice the difference or care for it is another matter. For most people the streaming version is good enough, but it doesn't compare what you get on Blu-ray.

          • @lint: assuming you have a LG tv and Sonos, neither of which output DTS-HD/X, what benefit is there?

    • +6

Two films and four drink coasters.

      • Aliens resurrection was decent

    • One of the best duologies in existence.
Shame they never made a follow up.

  • +5

patiently waits for Aliens to be released in 4k

  • +2

    4k or nothing

  • Wow that's incredibly good value for Blu-Ray. I feel like something has shifted this last month. Price floors are 30% lower on a bunch of things, some great deals on sets, but also older films are being re-issued for the first (or second) time after being unavailable for years ,so it's not simply shifting old stock. Prices finally approaching where DVD was in the glory years, though we shan't see its true likeness again.

I've bought literally dozens of films this past month, having struggled to fulfill a "2 for $15" match earlier in the year.

    • +1

And I'm guessing most will sit on a shelf forever and never get watched?

      • Well they'll eventually make their way to my Plex server, but I only buy movies I'd plan on rewatching (or are cheap enough that they come in a bundle where I don't really care - like this). I'll definitely rewatch Alien/Aliens multiple times before I die - the rest might get dug once every five years if I want something dumb on in the background and do a watch-through, like I just did with all the X-Men films.

  • And for the "why would you bother" crowd, Amazon Prime in the US is $US120/year, compared to our $AU60/year. Netflix just bumped its prices - $AU16.99 for 1080 HD ($US13.99 over there - $19.60). We're subsidized as a new market.

If you don't want to pirate, prices will keep going up until they find the market ceiling (which will look like cable I think - bundles up around $80-120/month.)

    • Amazon also provides a substantially larger array of products as well as insane shipping options in the US. Services provided are not comparable to our tiny market.

      • Fair point, but a 200% markup? I don't see any of these launch prices sitting still (especially Disney+). We're seeing the same with Uber.

    • And piracy is on the rise in the US again. Instead of people just being able to pay a subscription for their telly corporations decided to keep splitting their viewing content into smaller and smaller pieces among the channels until finally people are paying 100's of dollars a month for loads of different channels and then think "fk it, I can get a VPN for $3 a month and watch all this stuff for free".

As before the cause of media piracy is corporate greed, not people's unwillingness to pay a fair price.

  • What's the difference between the single blu-ray disc vs the 6 blu-ray disc at $53?

  • +2

Another Alien film was being made, then old mate Ridley decided to veto it. It was already 2 years into production, being made by the guy who did Chappie. Then Ridley comes out with The Last Duel, blames millennials and other media for his movie being so crap. Haha. You dropped the ball Ridley, getting old buddy. Time to retire to the electric scooter and bridge games. Apparently Disney owns Alien franchise now, are gonna make an Alien tv series… sigh.

All that said I'm pretty tempted to buy these disks, freaking love the movies.

    • hearing matt damon scream in the over-advertised trailer over and over for what seemed to be a period english drama just made sure I had zero interest in that movie

      • Yeah it was soooo monotonous. The same movie played back three times in the same screening from three different people's perspectives.

I feel ripped off even pirating it… I want my data back!

  • Aliens is one of the finest movies ever made. Still holds up well today. A rare case of a sequel being arguably better than the original.

  • Some may prefer Alien 40th Anniversary Ed 4K HDR, $8.79 on backorder: https://www.amazon.com.au/Alien-40th-Anniversary-4K-Ultra/dp…

  • I've actually never sat down and fully watched Aliens and all the sequels/prequels lol

    I will watch 1 & 2.

Reading the comments above, should I watch the other 4, or will it ruin it for me?

    • +2

It won't ruin it for you but the first two are definitely the best of the bunch

    • +2

The first two are masterpieces for their genres. The other four, well… they're okay. If it wasn't for the first two films they'd probably be considered good films, but they don't hold up when compared with 1 & 2. You will get a skewed opinion from some of the more hardcore fans, but if you're just looking for some decent films to watch I say go for it.

Probably should avoid the AVP spinoff that's floating around though.

  • Not able to add to cart.

  • For the people that missed out on this, the Alien Anthology set is on sale for $10.99
