Fallout: A Post Nuclear Role Playing Game

Note:
Site registration required.
At the moment the site is under heavy traffic.

Gameplay in Fallout centers around the game world, visiting locations and interacting with the local inhabitants. Occasionally, inhabitants will be immersed in dilemmas which the player may choose to solve in order to acquire karma and experience points. Fallout deviates from most role-playing video games in that it often allows for the player to complete tasks in multiple ways, often choosing solutions that are unconventional or even contrary to the original task, in which case the player may still be rewarded. The player's actions may ultimately dictate the ending of the game, or what future story or gameplay opportunities are available. Ultimately, players will encounter hostile opponents (if such encounters are not avoided using stealth or diplomacy), in which case they and the player will engage in combat. Non-combat portions of the game are typically played in real-time.

That was an error. Went to press + and my fat fingers hit -.
How can I retract the vote?

      • Click on votes.. Top left, and a little down

      • Retracted for you. BTW you cant change a vote, you only can retract a vote. AND you did the right thing. Using the report function alerts the mods to your need.

        • My sausage fingers thank you Ozpete. You have saved the day once again.

    Thanks.

For those interested you can find mods at No Mutants Allowed to find fixes to the many bugs in the game. The mods may also optimize the game for modern computers and add in things the original developers missed. Highly worth it.

For those that are interested, the original creators of Fallout are currently raising funds via Kickstarter for a new game called Wasteland 2:
    http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/inxile/wasteland-2

There is talk that Wasteland 2 will be the spiritual successor to Fallout 2 (not the exact same universe as Fallout, but Wasteland 1 inspired the creation of the original Fallout series).

Wasteland 2 is the direct sequel to the first ever post-apocalyptic computer RPG. The original Wasteland was the inspiration for the FALLOUT series of games, and the first RPG to allow players to split parties for tactical considerations, to face players with moral choices, and to make them deal with the consequences of their actions. It was the first to provide far more than the one-key-for-one-lock style of puzzle solving. It was groundbreaking, which is why IGN named it one of the top 25 PC games of all time, Computer Gaming World named it the Adventure Game of the year in 1988, and it was short-listed for inclusion in the Smithsonian Institution’s current “Art of the Computer Game” exhibition.

Game development being headed up by Brian Fargo, one of the original creators of Fallout

    • I loved Wasteland, one of my favourite games on the C64…

  • Great find! Thanks.

I picked this up this morning and didn't even think about posting it here hah! Classic!

  • puts on whingers hat
It was originally released over 15 years ago.
    It is for DOS/Windows ONLY
There are two sequels + expansion packs released already
It wasn't terribly popular in it's day (hence limited nostalgia value)

    BUT
    It's free. Can't argue with that :)

    • It was popular enough to spawn the sequels.
It's requirements are quite low in that most modern OS's can run dosbox and play it smoothly in that environment.
PS. the resolution of the game is limited if you look about I remember a MOD being available to increase the game window size.
I think this was the one I used when I reinstalled it several years ago…
      http://falloutmods.wikia.com/wiki/Fallout1_Resolution_Patch

      • Also it runs flawlessly via WINE on Linux.
        No patching/changes necessary. Download/Install/Win

  • Thanks for posting mate - I've always wanted to play it. Now been playing for an hour in and I'm completely hooked!

  • This doesn't have to be downloaded immediately right?

    • Nope! :)

  • You only have to click on the add to account button, and you get a "your payment has been processed, thanks for your purchase" message. So once you have done so, you have "paid" for the item, and it is added to your account permanently.

  • How did I miss this!? NOOOO

    • Well, you don't mind paying. You can get it as a bonus game (other games, music and content included) for $4.70 USD from IndieGala, at GOG it would cost you $5.99.
And at the moment IndieGala is having a HappyHour sale (3x1 or 4x1 gifts). Read site for details

      • My apologies, got mixed up. My mistake. It's Flatout, not Fallout.
