Acer Nitro 5 15.6-Inch i5-11400H/8GB/512GB SSD/RTX3060 6GB Gaming Laptop $1198 + Delivery ($0 C&C) @ Harvey Norman

1250

$97 cheaper than the previous deal for this model.

Only 8GB but can be upgraded to 16GB quite easily.

At $1198 this seems like a bargain for this particular model.

Why are people comparing a GPU to a laptop GPU? 😂
Seriously, their world's apart in performance from what everyone says.

Shopback still do 3-5% discounted gift cards? More savings!

    • Why are people comparing a GPU to a laptop GPU? 😂
Seriously, their world's apart in performance from what everyone says.

From benchmarks i've watched they're about 20% apart. Given the shortage at the moment you're basically comparing a GPU vs Laptop for that reason alone. If you can somehow find a GPU to buy you still need a computer to install it into. It's a good starting point for people that don't have an established PC to build into. In addition it's debatable whether the 20% is worlds apart if you compare it to not being able to play games at all :)

For those looking to buy this one or the i7 version here are my thoughts. I have the i7 version bought on Tuesday. Added 32gb ram plus 1tb data ssd and 1tb nvme ssd. Total 48gb ram.

The laptop quality is quite good and not cheap at all for the price.

Internal cooling system is quite beefy and has great upgradability.

Please buy a X8 dual rank memory even if it's 2666mhz. Single rank 3200 x16 can be 20 to 30% slower. (Very tricky to buy online as even if the photos are dual rank, lots of users are reporting to receive single rank, I bought mine from centrecom specifically mentioning x8 dualrank)

I have been playing csgo at 300+ fps and for other productivity tasks it's great. I use SketchUp.
Temps are around 70c when heavily loaded.

NVIDIA driver was too old have to update it to latest version. No gsync option

Lots of bloat apps can be uninstalled quickly.

Have to change a setting in windows to set hardware based refresh rate when connecting external monitor otherwise you will get choppy refresh rate even though it shows 300+fps

    • How much for the upgrades you bought?

      • 109 Intel nvme ssd Amazon.
        169 32gb dual rank x8 2666 MHz centrecom
89 bx500 ssd bought a few months ago.
~1440 for the laptop bought gift cards for 5% off through health provider.

Total ~1800 plus some change. Sold my old PC for 900.

Can't fault it. So far love the portability and performance.

        • I spose if you buy this one for $1200, it's still $1600
Not that bad for the specs!

        • 89 bx500 ssd bought a few months ago.

Did you have any issues with the BX500?

I had super annoying issues with the MX500. I have to disabled WMD controller in the BIOS in order for the laptop to even POST!

          • @CVonC: No issues. I have kept the Acer drive as the main boot drive.

            • @Godgodgod: Just wondering, did you install the Intel SSD & BX500 at the same time?

    • 48GB RAM seems like a bit much. Why do you think 48GB at 2666mhz is better than 32GB at 3200mhz? I would have thought 32GB is plenty so the higher speed is better

      • I compared by adding a 16gb single rank x16 3200. And then adding a x16 dual rank 2666. The performance difference was 20%. Even though on paper 2666 is slower a dual rank ram performs a lot faster. On eBay or Amazon there is no visibility on what you gonna get. So I bought the 32gb from centrecom which clearly said dual rank x8 memory on 32gb crucial listing. For apple to Apple comparison, i.e. 3200 dual rank x8 vs 2666 dual rank x8 you are only looking at 1% performance difference

  • How will this go with my Dell 27" 1440p 165hz monitor via the HDMI port? Will I be able to run at 1080p/1440p @120-165hz?

Any refresh sync like G or free sync?

I play old games, so I'm not worried about fps (will get 1000+ in the games I play)…

    • It works fine on my cell 1440p ultra wide screen. Initially I noticed a lot of lag even though I was getting 300+ fps on CS go. Turns out there is a setting on windows to change it to "hardware" based refresh rate and it now works great.

      • Turns out there is a setting on windows to change it to "hardware" based refresh rate and it now works great.

        I don't think that's g-sync though?

You need to check the nvidia control panel to see if g-sync is actually enabled and supported.

      • I have a gsync monitor but the NVIDIA control panel doesn't show that setting. I can se the screen to 144hz from the control panel. Same 144 Hz from windows and hardware based refresh rate enabled does the trick for me.

        • Yeah that's just setting the refresh rate to be locked at 144Hz (good for vsync). G-Sync = variable/adaptive refresh rate though.

          • @CVonC: But there is no option for gsync on this laptop

            • @Godgodgod: G-sync will automatically be enabled if the monitor supports it and over the correct output. Usually G-sync is DP only, but the DP is directly connected to the iGPU on this laptop which obviously doesn't support G-sync. However, G-sync can work over HDMI (which the 3060 is connected to) but both ends have to be HDMI 2.1. It has been confirmed that G-sync is detected over the laptop's HDMI 2.1 port and connected to a HDMI 2.1 G-sync monitor (Gigabyte FV34U). It definitely will not work over HDMI 1.4. But what is not confirmed, if G-sync will work when connected to a HDMI 2.0 G-sync (or even Freesync but G-sync compatible) monitor. What monitor do you have?

              • @CVonC: AOC 27g2 gsync
                And
                Dell ultra wide freesync 165hz

AOC always worked on gsync over DP so your theory makes sense. This laptop doesn't have a DP out.

                  @Godgodgod:

                  AOC 27g2 gsync

This is HDMI 1.4 so definitely not possible with g-sync over HDMI with this laptop

                  Dell ultra wide freesync 165hz

Which one specifically? Have you tried? Some of the Dell freesyncs have HDMI 2.0.

This laptop doesn't have a DP out.

It does have DP out via USB-C. You should be able to have a triple monitor setup through HDMI (3060) + DP via USB-C (iGPU) + laptop screen.

                  • @CVonC: I am gonna order a type C to DP to remove any ambiguity. Has anyone tested this?

                  • @CVonC: i got a type c to dispaly port hub, dosent work with this laptop, hub works with my brothers dell. noit sure whats wrong. cant find any info re. my laptop having thunderbolt. i7 version.

      • Ok nice, but on the HN specs page the HDMI out on this laptop is only 2.0 right? How are you getting 2.1 out of the laptop?

Will a type C to DP cable be the best option for 1440p@120+hz?

Edit: NVM I read your link and it seems the HN spec page is most likely wrong given someone has confirmed 2.1 functionality.

        • i can confirm type c to display port dosent work. the i7 with 3060 dosent have thunderbolt? cant say i have been tearing my hairs since this evening

  • Got this exact model for an early xmas present just today. Waiting for it to set up and update right now.

  • Does it have a RGB keyboard, like the Acer Nitro 5 i5-10300H version?

    • Yes.

  • Is there that much difference between this and the 3050 GPU?

  • Could anyone comment on the VR performance using Oculus Link with an Oculus Quest 2? I have a desktop computer with an RTX 2080 TI and Ryzen 9 5950X which I primarily use, but a more portable solution for around the house would be good. Just wondering whether the money would be better spent on this laptop or upgrading the network to AX and using remote desktop.

Thinking of replacing the OEM RAM with 2 of those 3200mhz RAM sticks. Any concerns on compatibility?

Both look x8 dual rank so you are good. I would personally go with crucial. Also the price is a little high. You can get 32gb 2666 at centrecom for $169

      • Cheers mate

    • Sorry to ask this. Are you replacing RAM yourself? Is it easy? I have asked HV to add 8gb RAM cost $150. Thanks.

      • It's easy as. Unscrew the screws on the base. Unclip the base. Remove the ram. Replace the ram. You can't put it the wrong way around either. And don't believe whatever HN tells you, it does not ever void warranty.

        • My concern is snapping the clips, I've ordered an ebay mobilephone/laptop opening kit that has those prying tools…

          • @R3XNebular: Nah the clips on the nitro 5 are not easy to break. And you don't even need a pry tool. Just pull from the vents at the back. The vents are part of the bottom panel. I've been detaching and attaching the nitro 5 bottom panel heaps (when I was doing my extensive combo SSD testing). I don't even leave the screws on. Am also running 2x32gb Crucial Vengeance 2666MHz 2rx8 18-18-18-43 sticks.

Guys, I so strongly recommend this model. I had one with the 10300h processor and rtx3060 laptop GPU and it performed amazingly well. I caved, and sold it for a desktop rtx 3060 thinking I was missing out on performance. It is almost identical to my desktop performance on battlefield V and The Witcher 3. There's at most 20% difference but the vast majority of the time it's about 10% in fps performance. Make sure to update your GPU bios to get 95W and to get 16gb dual channel ram.

The only major difference was that I paid $1440 for the desktop PC. I personally don't regret my decision though

  • Just purchased. My sticker from Harvey Norman says a 11800H for $1799. Potentially wrong sticker? Anyway to find out the CPU without opening it

    • You bought it for $1198?

    • Potentially wrong sticker?

Yep that's just typically HN having nfi.

Same thing when I bought mine during black friday.

      • Yea exactly the same. Lol. Wish I I had the 11800H

  • Is replacing the ram for these difficult. Would hate to snap a clip

    • Sounds easy from what most people say
