Acer Nitro 5 15.6-Inch i5-11400H/8GB/512GB SSD/RTX3060 6GB Gaming Laptop $1198 + Delivery ($0 C&C) @ Harvey Norman

1250

$97 cheaper than the previous deal for this model.

Only 8GB but can be upgraded to 16GB quite easily.

At $1198 this seems like a bargain for this particular model.

fantastic bang for your buck model

    • good plastic build (much better than flimsy nitro 5 of the past)
    • usable keyboard
    • 95w 3060 kicks ass at this price point
    • 11400H is a fantastic CPU with 10nm process and 6C/12T
    • solid upgrade options for ram and storage

    a couple cons:
    - screen is not the best. slow response, low colour gamut
    - no mux switch, you're stuck in Optimus mode

but show me a laptop in this price range without flaws

fantastic option if you can live with the above

    • +1

Have one for work but hook it up to 27" monitor and mech keyboard at home, runs games quite well

      • +2

I had a lot of fun with mine (I had 10300H model) it is plenty powerful for all modern games

but I sold mine on because I need to edit videos and photos on the go, and color accurate screen was a must. and because once again I found that 15.6" is a bit too small for me haha and I went 17.3" again

        • how much did you get for it?

            • @shabaka: i just had some clown offer me $800 for 1 month old laptop.

              • @Jugganautx: yeah, joys of selling. usually I price mine 40% above what I plan to sell it for, and either wait for a suitable offer, or send offers to interested buyers, getting the price I wanted

buyer thinks he's getting a bargain, I get my money, everyone happy burrito

don't pay attention to low ball offers, counter offer to what you really want + 10%

        • What did you get instead if you don't mind me asking? I'm almost in the same boat

          • +1

@masya: found a good deal on Razer Blade 17

apart from last year's base 15 (1660ti, 120hz), all of them have great screens

    • +1

Nah acer uses the fact that it is a budget laptop to make it rubbish compared to its competitors

      • I had one, it's perfectly usable. competitors don't have a 3060 in this price range

        • -1

nah but its no where near the performance of the laptops in the similar price range

    • Is optimus something you can just disable manually though?

      • as far as I know it depends on the model, I don't have this one any more so I can't confirm

      • You can only disable optimus if there is a mux switch. This doesn't have a mux switch so you can't disable optimus.

  • +8

This is like literally buying a desktop 3060 card by itself (with the current climate GPU pricing).

    • obviously you cant compare the 3060 mobile (especially the one that is in here, which is rubbish making it worse than the previous years 1660ti) to the actual 3060

  • +1

This is a great deal, even with having to deal with Harvey Norman.

  • +2

I bought this as a work and after shift laptop. Also uses igpu when not needed for dgpu.

Havnt found anything I hate about it, screen is useable, keyboard can sometimes be a little press heavy but I press heavy so no issue for me.

    • What does igpu and dgpu mean?

      • Integrated vs dedicated card.

  • +1

Can I upgrade this to 32 gbs ram with these ram sticks, if anyone knows?

    https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/memory/sodimm/86178-ct16…

  • I wonder when this will fall under 1k.

    • +1

Never. It will be superceded before it drops in price.

  • Wow. Legion 5P tho is 3070 but dang … With ram and SSD upgrade, it's still considerably cheaper for those not needed the QHD, 3070 and gaming ryzen specs.

  • +3

I bought this last week and despite my soul being destroyed by having to walk into a Harvey Norman store to collect, I'm extremely happy with it.

After all the relatively negative comments from the previous deal, I honestly wasn't expecting a whole lot but at this price, it's awesome IMO. Quite a different comparison I know but I have an older 5K 27" iMac and yeah the screen on this is a little dim and yeah the speakers could be a little louder but all in all, it's a great little machine - I have no complaints so far.

    • How is the battery life on this unit? And is it heavy?

      • Battery life probably isn't the greatest but around 3-4.5 hours is what I've been getting after running the battery calibration tool in the Care Centre app. I've mainly kept it plugged in and have limited the battery to stop charging at 80%.

It's got some weight but don't think it's overly heavy for the size. I think you'd certainly feel it if you're carrying it around all day in your backpack though.

        • Price seems to be good and I am thinking of buying this for my daughter who will be in year 11 next year. Will take her there to see the laptop and let her decide.

Edit: Will it charge via USB-C with a powerbank?

          Thanks

          • +1

@Tam: If she doesn’t games then there might be cheaper options with much better battery life out there

          • @Tam: For a school laptop, I'd be prioritising battery life.

  • +1

Does anyone know me know if this is the one with the Thunderbolt port? i want to get another screen to work from home as I got 2 screens in the office.

    • -4

No thunderbolt but you has HDMI 2.0 and USB-C so you can hook it up to external monitor.

      • +2

        that's incorrect

    • +3

It should be - the one I bought last week has a Thunderbolt 4 port with the Thunderbolt Control Centre app pre-installed.

    • +1

Does anyone know me know if this is the one with the Thunderbolt port?

this one comes with thunderbolt 4

    • Yes and no.

This model does have thunderbolt symbol beside the USB-C port which supports display and data. However, the USB-C port does NOT support power delivery (charging) which should be part of thunderbolt standard. (You probably should never use PD for a gaming laptop though.)

Besides, the USB-C port is connected directly to the integrated GPU. So, make sure your gaming monitor is connected to the HDMI port.

      • +1

However, the USB-C port does NOT support power delivery (charging) which should be part of thunderbolt standard

this isn't correct, charging via thunderbolt 4 is only a requirement if the laptop consumes less than 100W which this laptop does not fall under.

so under thunderbolt 4 standards it complies with all requirements

  • +5

    Great deal op
Does anyone know if it's worth to get
The Acer Nitro i7 version RTX3060 version ?

    • +1

Yep I would be interested to know to, I'm juggling between this and the i7 version

      • +2

For most I think the additional $300 equating to 25% increase is a big ask for this targeted segment of consumer (maximum bang for buck).

        • +4

Assuming this has 1 * 8gb SODIMM, it'll cost $50 for an extra 8gb stick, meaning you're paying $250 to go from an i5 to an i7. I'd say it's probably not worth it and this is the better deal.

          • -5

            @xyron: not true

            • +5

@T4tech: Which part of what I said was not true? What an unhelpful comment.

              • -2

@xyron: oh, so what part are you confused about

    • +3

6C i5 definitely isn't the bottleneck for gaming in most titles, so unless you really need that extra 2 cores for productivity, I wouldn't bother.

I'd rather spend the difference on RAM and storage upgrades.

    • I got the i7 version last night, and I'm really happy so far. I use After Effects all day so need all the CPU I can get, so for me it's worth it.

    • +1

I bought the i7 version on Tuesday. Would have bought this one if it was 1200 at the time of purchase. Ram on i7 is better. Ram on this one is throwaway. With ram update this one would be 1300. I would say if you can get 5% gift cards go for i7 version, otherwise this is great

    • I just bought the i7 version. Has 1 stick 16gb ram so you only need to buy 1 more to get the 32GB RAM which supposedly works well with this setup. The i5 you'd need to buy 2 x 16GB sticks to maximise the performance

    • grab the amd not intel.

  • Arrrrr, so tempted, only thing putting me off is it's cheap quality parts breaking sometime between 2mins and 2yrs of ownership. Must resist.

  • Shopback gift cards max out at $250. Are you able to use more than one during online checkout?

    • +4

When I got mine a few weeks ago I used all shopback giftcards on HN website no issue…

  • Does anyone know if this comes configured with 2 * 4gb SODIMMS or 1 * 8gb?

    • +3

      1 x 8Gb Kingston

      • Mine had 1 x 8Gb Samsung

        • The ones that came with no Thunderbolt 4 have the Samsung stick. Where as the Thunderbolt 4 variant has the Kingston stick.

  • +1

Bought it last week, screen is very average, but the build quality seems decent. It does come with a lot of preinstalls though. It does have a thunderbolt port but that isn't connected to the gpu. You would have to use the hdmi port for that. Overall I'm really happy with it so far.

    • Except for buying last week I guess. I haven't opened mine yet as presents for my kids.

      • Check the Harvey Norman Price Guarantee. They'll refund the difference within 7 days. They did it for me when I bought a Samsung M7 monitor for $597, then the next day they had it advertised for $548.

Two days later it was $397 elsewhere, then $349, but that's another story. HN said they couldn't match that and refunded me instead.

  • +2

This has the superior 6 core current gen cpu compared to the 4 core last gen from the hugely popular 250 upvoted Nitro deal 2 months ago. Both models are now the same price? Talk about a bargain!

  • +3

    Oh the pain.

I have two new ones in the cupboard waiting as christmas presents for tomorrow.

Paid $1295 each last week at HN, which I thought was a decent deal.

    • +1

Ive emailed them in the same situation seeing if they will offer back the difference. Feel a bit done over as they would have know they were doing this deal then

      • +1

Same, and I have bought 2, one from 2weeks ago and one from last week, feel a bit like got cheated. But anyway, emailed them to see if they are willing to do any refund for the pricing gap.

        • +2

I doubt Hardly Normal will do anything. But do let us know.

      • +2

I would eat my right shoe if HN offered you anything but a middle finger in response.

        • It gets worse than this i've had a response.

So long story short, when the first deal showed up, we went in showed them the ad, told them we wanted this.

The email i've recieved have told me there were two models that were near identical :
          NH.QDGSA.002 and NH.QEUSA.004

They're now telling me that I was sold the NH.QEUSA.004 and not the one we intended.

He doesn't know the difference and is emailing acer to see what was going on.

I've told him that if we've gone in there and been sold the incorrect laptops we'll be very displeased, from the research it seems we've been given a model that doesn't have thunderbolt and has worse ram.

If this is the case i'm going to be telling him we want the laptops we went in and asked for, we'll be bringing in ours, swapping the hard drives and getting a refund on the difference.

          • +1

            @typhoonadventure:

            NH.QDGSA.002 and NH.QEUSA.004

            The NH.QDGSA.002 (54ZA) has TB4, BT5.1 and the worse Kingston 1rx16 8gb stick
            The NH.QEUSA.004 (55R8) has no TB4, BT5.2 and the better Samsung 1rx8 8gb stick

            • @CVonC: They're now claiming that when I went in to buy the 54ZA I was sold the 55R8 instead, so therefore i'm not entitled to anything.

I've stated I went in to buy a 54ZA and if i've been given the 55R8 they've given me the wrong laptop in which case I want the right one and will return both mine my fathers.

              They've come back with offering a $50 giftcard….

Given that it now looks like they sold us the wrong laptop, really not happy about this.

              • @typhoonadventure: It says on the inner Acer box (not the outer one with the HN sticker) which one you got. You should also be able to tell as the USB-C port will have a lightning bolt next to it

    • +1

I just spoke to someone online about this i was in a similar situation and brought one of the acer nitro 5 laptops on sale nearly a month ago and now it's on sale for $200 cheaper. Their price guarantee policy only guaranteed within 7 days of purchase. So hopefully you should get the price difference refunded. https://www.harveynorman.com.au/customer-service/price-match…

      • Yeah I bought mine 27/11 :(

Wouldn't be surprised if they argue that it's not a "competitor" though.

        • Yeah that’s the same date I brought mine. I wasn’t able to get price difference because it was after the 7 day price guarantee :(

          • @Skellingt0n: Don't worry mate, you are not the only one…and I have bought 2…

            • @RooBun: If you haven't opened them yet, could you try and take them back for a refund then re-purchase at the new cheaper price? Tho knowing Harvey Norman you probably won't even be able to refund them.

    • Yep, just an update, I got a middle finger from HN said the purchase is more than 7days…$100 lesson learnt…

      • what you expect from gerry, youre supposed to be a professional

  • +1

Previously got the MSI GF65 1660Ti for under $1K :-)
Now waiting for Nitro 5 3060 to hit $1K :-)

    • I bet they go up considerably after Jan
Almost everything will due to inflation/chip shortages enjoy the low pricing while you can

  • +1

How's this perform on most of the latest AAA titles like Halo Infinite or APEX, smooth enough?

    • I'll reply tonight. Halo is downloading. I got the i7

    • I got the i7 and I tried Halo Infinite on the Ultra preset. GPU runs at 100% while CPU sits around 45%. 99% fps sits around 50. GPU temp sits around 82 degrees. Laptop feels quite warm and fans are going gang busters. You'd have to wear headphones to enjoy graphics intensive games on this laptop.

Overall runs okay, just hot and loud. I also learnt that I suck at the game

      • if your GPU is sitting at 82 then your laptop has probably a similar issue to mine.

crack open the bottom and tighten all the screws in the number shown on the heatsink.

mine were completely undone (not tightened at all) and i was hitting 82 degrees also, which is protective cutoff

  • I got the i7 version of this last night. I'm really happy so far- the screen is probably the weakest part but it really isn't a deal breaker, it still looks pretty good for what it is. I went to see it in stores first (Good Guys had it on display- Harvey Norman didn't). Very happy so far, great price for what you get inside compared to the other laptops.

    • How much for?

  • I want to buy but can a delayed delivery be arranged?

    • Parcel Collect at any Australia Post allow for one month period for collection.

  • wwyd with a computer like this? also, aren't 3060 rtx this price on their own?
