    • If you have a knack for tinkering. I highly recommend the Gaggia Classic Pro. Its a machine and not an appliance. Any issues with the machine you have a pretty large community of reference, and parts are readily available should components fail.

When you understand the limitations of the machine. You can go down the modification world. Most people go through the PID, OPV adjustment, and light dimmer mod route. (See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SR1_cgUR9ks). Shades of Coffee UK has a simple kit, but if you're frugal and resourceful you can source most things from AliExpress.

If you're looking for a challenge. Join the Gagguino crew (https://github.com/Zer0-bit/gaggiuino). They're adding lots of features using microcontrollers. (https://github.com/Zer0-bit/gaggiuino#features--completeness)

If you've gotten this far, maybe you should've purchased the BDB. However, you'll have a machine that will last and story to tell.

Gosh darn it! I paid $1050 from good guys less than a month ago. Anything I can do? Didn’t get the blasted concierge deal! Grumble.

        I’ve had too many!!!

    • Nothing you can do now. But depending on your spending patterns and requirements I'd recommend you look at getting a credit card with price protection that gives you a refund for price changes within a certain period for purchases made on the card.

I used to travel overseas frequently and found the 28 Degrees Credit Card brilliant for my needs for overseas travel. The benefits for overseas travel such as fee free ATM withdrawals are long gone but the card still works well for overseas purchases. The price protection insurance is the thing I find most valuable in these covid times.

Purchased a new Breville Dual Boiler earlier this year and put in 2 separate refund claims as the price dropped on subsequent deals.

If you put your major purchases through the card and are able to pay off your credit card debt each month (the interest charge if you don't is exorbitant) it works out pretty well.

      YMMV of course

They haven't offered price protection for many many years on new cards

I paid 790 for this including the smart grinder back in 2019, money well spent.

  • This and the slayer mod with a half decent grinder like the DF64 and it's a great setup for the money

    • Funny I have the df64 on order and just bought this…..just about to google slayer mod…thx

Awesome. Yeah basically a variable flow rate control which uses the water tap. Poor man's slayer. Downside is you lose hot water capacity but just use the kettle for long blacks

        • hey do you have any more info or links?
basically use the kettle anyway for long blacks so that is fine…..can't seem to find any detailed mod info for this machine but this seems like the way to go

Will check out the forums if you don't have any links on hand

Once you get your Dual Boiler remember to check out the Coffee Snobs Dual Boiler Owners Thread. Lots of great advice and tips on how to make the most of your new machine:

  • Ok just pulled the trigger. What do I need to do to prepare the machine for Adelaide tap water? (which I understand to be on the ‘hard’ side).

    • Most people recommend getting your water tested and then investing in an understink filtration system.

      • Actually our house has an old filtered water tap - perhaps that is enough? I might get the water out of it tested just in case.

        • Yep get it tested
