    Thanks OP

Hope they will send 18TB instead of 10TB this time 🤞
Maybe Amazon US has less issues compared to Amazon UK via Amazon AU

Edit: Has been lower relatively recently $448.78 https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/664336
Holding out for more price drops

    E:
? This first insta-post link is incorrect

The dupe post is also incorrect… https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/11551842/redir

seems to work now + 3camels

    • The $448.78 drive isn't exactly the same part number and is UK rather than USA. But I will add it to my 3Cammels. Gteat prices either way.

      • Your dupe post pointed to Philips Hue lights!

        • Don't know how that happened…. I copy pasted the link when I was on the HDD listing. Had not even looked at Hue lights.

  • Unsure if this drive fits under any of the cashback categories. Wouldn't bet on it working.

  • Surely anybody wanting 18TB needs a RAID? So a NAS with bare 2.5" drives is the way to go.
What is the usage case for this?

    • +4

What ? Use case for this is 18TB of space. If you want to pool multiple together then go ahead 👍

Don't forget to buy two because you'll need a backup.

      • -1

Mirroring is not a backup. I try to tell managers this, but they don't always listen.

But don't be shy, what is the usage case? Pr0n collection?

        • +1

          media

        • Mirroring is not a backup.

          100% this.

But don't be shy, what is the usage case?

Use case is still just 18TB of space as above 🤷🏼‍♂️ You don't need to RAID it or mirror it. It's just storage.

        • +2

Who mentioned mirroring? A second drive can be offsite, it’s not automatically a mirror because there are two.

  • Good to shuck? 7200 Rpm?

    • +1

      5400RPM. WD180EDFZ

      • Do 7200rpm 18TB drives hit this price point?

    • +3

      18Tb for $470ish where?

      • The closest I've seen for an internal drive is the 18TB WD Ultrastar for $550 on Amazon (Deal barely lasted a day)

      • What's a decent enclosure for a single drive?

    • +1

      Wot?

Red internal drives are NOT cheaper! That's the point of buying these (whether shucking or not)

Please show me those cheap 18tb red drives.

        Amazon AU

        WD RED 6TB 7200RPM 256MB Cache 5y warranty for 349
        Two disks, 12TB for 700.
A decent USB-c travel enclosure dual disk for 100

As I said, OP posts are for newbies who just wanna cheap storage no matter if the performance isn't good. 3y warranty, 5400 single disk. Yeah nahhh

        • +4

Branded storage? Most drives are going to be either WD or Seagate.
A lot of people are shucking these and throwing them into Synology/QNAP’s where you would be running RAID. The price is approaching pre-Chia cost which is good.

Your solution above achieves 6Tb mirrored for $700. These disks will provide provide 18Tb mirrored for $1000. 3x the storage for 1.5x the cost… The more disks, the higher the read speed through RAID and larger disks give more room when your NAS has a maximum number of disks you can use.

        • +3

So.. 18tb for $1050 (also requiring three power points) is cheaper than $470?

        • +1

So you're suggesting a 12TB alternative for almost double the cost of this 18TB drive… ?

Are you doing this with a straight face ?

As I said, OP posts are for newbies

I don't think we are the newbs 😎

    • …. wow.

Every single part of this post is wrong with the exception of "you need at least 2 units to have a backup".

Branded storage are for newbies, buy the disks plus a decent enclosure and marry them.

That is precisely what this deal is all about.

  • +1

    Thanks OP, bought one.

  • Now $576

  • Back in stock again 👍

  • So tempting but… do I really need 18TB, and are we headed for cheaper mass storage prices again?

My Synology DS1019 NAS just hit 80% full with it's 3x12TB drives; and my next two drives need to both be the same size to ensure I get best bang for buck with expanding my SHR.

  • Anyone's drives shipped yet?

    • Nope, but my order's delivery date is by 16 Feb, so they've got plenty of time yet.

    • Mine's already in NSW as of 31st December.

Though it says arriving on the 21st of Jan

      • Interesting - mine is still yet to ship and the order says "Arriving 16 February"…

  • Ok mine finally shipped at the start of this week and just now Amazon notified me saying the items are being returned and my money refunded!

I checked the tracking ID, looks like the package was damaged in transit, that sucks! I wonder how long until they drop below $470 again.

    • Mine also just shipped a few days ago, finally 🤞
