Description

Before The Matrix, before Star Wars, before Ender's Game and Neuromancer, there was Dune: winner of the prestigious Hugo and Nebula awards, and widely considered one of the greatest science fiction novels ever written.

Melange, or 'spice', is the most valuable - and rarest - element in the universe; a drug that does everything from increasing a person's life-span to making intersteller travel possible. And it can only be found on a single planet: the inhospitable desert world Arrakis.

Whoever controls Arrakis controls the spice. And whoever controls the spice controls the universe.
When the Emperor transfers stewardship of Arrakis from the noble House Harkonnen to House Atreides, the Harkonnens fight back, murdering Duke Leto Atreides. Paul, his son, and Lady Jessica, his concubine, flee into the desert. On the point of death, they are rescued by a band for Fremen, the native people of Arrakis, who control Arrakis' second great resource: the giant worms that burrow beneath the burning desert sands.

In order to avenge his father and retake Arrakis from the Harkonnens, Paul must earn the trust of the Fremen and lead a tiny army against the innumerable forces aligned against them.

And his journey will change the universe.

I just re-read the book (first read in the 90s) and enjoyed it even more than I my first read. Then I made the mistake of reading dune messiah.
My tip: skip Dune Messiah and Children of Dune

    • Are they the next two in the series?

      • +2

Just pretend they don’t exist and the series stopped at dune… you will be happier

        • I enjoyed the prelude to Dune books, and the Butlerian Jihad series as well. They're no Frank Herbert, but you could do worse if you're looking for more
          Dune-iverse

            @sklzthtklz: To be fair they aren’t awful….
It’s not like Orson Scott-Card sequels bad

@[Deactivated]: I actually enjoyed some of the Ender's Game sequels. The Bean one was good and is kinda the basis for a lot of those La femme Nikita type movies.

          • @sklzthtklz: I particularly liked the legends series and prelude series. People seem to hate on Brian's work but they were very interesting reads.

        • I second this. As somebody who read the entire series, I think the trudge of the sequels ended up ruining the original. It's a bit like the matrix - better you just stop at the original and pretend the others don't exist.

I respectfully disagree with your tip on the strongest possible terms. Dune needs its sequels to complete its story, its only through the sequels and the greater picture that you actually understand what Frank Herbert was writing about. And besides imo the next 3 books, dune messiah, children of dune and God emperor of dune are more thrilling and exciting than the original by a country mile.

      • For the completeness of the story, perhaps there Dune Messiah and Children of Dune should be read. if so, why not write about the 12 years of war?

In Dune Messiah, there are only a few major event happening. To fill the events, pages are used to describe the mental anguish and inner turmoil the characters felt. I think there is just too much gnashing of teeth.

BIG SPOILERS: But that is the meat of the books. The books are about the sacrifices that Leto makes that Pauls could not. It is about the Golden Path and the sacrifices that they need to make to put humanity on it. The first time (in the 90s too) I hated the God Emperor of Dune for the same reason (I thought it was boring). That is the best book in fact.

    • Good guy Paul disagrees.

there are 5 books in the series, loved em all

Up there with "Tears of the Anaren"

    • Can't tell if you are being sarcastic or not…

dune 2000 was one of my fav pc games ever

Dune II, was the most addictive game I'd played at the time.

        • i had no idea this was in development. Looks interesting.

I was hoping for an RTS, but the developer that made the games I loved (Dune and C&C) was shut down years ago by EA so we pretty much have no chance of another Dune RTS.

The movie was fantastic! I’ve got this copy at home and love the cover art, great price.

It was actually kinda boring, too many trippy dream sequences.

      • -1

Yeah I had the same vibes.

For me the slow-mo zoomed in face focused scenes were a bit over dramatic.

      • Shits all over the new matrix though

    • +1

Glad you enjoyed it. To be honest it looked a bit too "young adult" for me based on the trailers…

    • The books are much better as it allows for properly development of the characters and the different factions in the dune universe.

  • Waiting for a sale on the kindle version…

You understand that your local library probably has a free digital version that you can borrow to your hearts content?

      • Mine does but it's the Spanish version. :(

  • Nice book. Prefer the better looking hardcover edition though (at around $60 bucks mind you) :D

  • Thanks OP, was looking for this book with this particular cover. Excited to read this after watching the movie.

I do wish they wouldn't slap these "NOW A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE" graphics on nice cover designs.

Dune trilogy was under $5 earlier this year https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/600744

Is this the 4K version? 😁

  • I bought this for $14 over a month ago from amazon. Barely a price drop from that price. Did they just jack the price up after the movie released in Au?

  • Thanks OP, perfect timing: was just talking to my brother about the movie and he mentioned he wanted to read the book.

  • Dune (fantastic book, never touched sequal-mania) is now over 50 years old and should not be under copyright. IMO anything above production cost and you've been ripped off.

    • In Australia, copyright lasts for the lifespan of the author plus 70 years, so it'll be under copyright protection for a while yet.

BigW and Kmart both have the Dune novel for $12. And Target have it for $11.90.

The Dune book I enjoyed the most was the last, Chapterhouse: Dune

  • Very tempted to grab this, especially since I just got a $10 voucher from amazon.

I've had my eye on this copy though because I love the cover art but can't decide if it's worth the extra cost…
