Battery Mower and Line Trimmer

Moved into a new home with a fairly small yard and looking to purchase a battery powered mower and line trimmer.

It's about 10 square metres in the front and 60 square metres out the back. I'm on a budget and the Ozito products seem to get positive mentions in these forums.

Am considering the following:

Line trimmer

Mower 1

Mower 2

The line trimmer doesn't come with a battery but I figured I could use the batteries from either mower with it - is this correct?

Also the differences between the mowers. Mower 1 seems to be brushless but only comes with one battery while Mower 2 has 2 batteries.

Is Mower 1 the better mower because it is brushless or are there other things I should consider?

Appreciate any advice.

    Yeh, good choices.

Yes, you can use the batteries from the mower in the line trimmer.

Mower 2 is the better mower as it has double the voltage (adds 100%), whereas brushless adds 10%. Go for mower 2.

      Voltage≠power

The mower uses 2 batteries. They should be both charged (not mismatched) therefore I'd suggest to keep two batteries for the mower exclusively.

Sometimes there is the deal where you get mower + trimmer and 2 batteries (2.5ah) for like $200 recent deal

Then pick up a 4ah battery for $48 recent deal

  • Thank you for the advice.

If I grab the mower that uses 2 batteries could I mow the lawn first then use one of the batteries in the line trimmer - then fully charge them both and next mow use the other battery in the line trimmer so they degrade at the same rate?

Like the mower, the line trimmer needs 2 batteries to work.

      • Very good - thanks for pointing that out.

If you go this route you CAN actually use the two half-used batteries in the trimmer - since they'd both have exactly the same level of discharge, there's no issue.

@Switchblade88: Yes this. I regularly do this, between the mower mentioned and a dual battery blower. I have a similar size lawn to the op, and there is heaps of power (2 bars) left to run down in the blower.

Depending on what you need it for, the cheaper blade style trimmer is also pretty good IMO.

Many people seem to dislike it, but I have used one for over a year now every time I mow with zero issues. I have not even gone through the blades it came with yet.

People say the blades come off, but that very very rarely happens to me. I think it might be just that people use it like a line trimmer, where you just move it along close to a hard object like a fence or wall, and the line bends where it hits. Whereas with the blade style trimmer, you need to be a big more precise in not pushing too hard against solid objects.

Of course, depending on your setup a line trimmer might be much more useful.

I have both the line trimmer and the similar 2 battery mower and they both do a pretty good job of a small/medium lawn had for over 12mnths and never missed a beat yet you may need more than the 2 4amp batteries though I’ve got 4 4amps 👌

I have the same trimmer and it's plenty of power for all jobs plus can double as a light edger, although having to hold it at an angle (vs some trimmers that has a rotatable head)

On that note, it is rather heavy, so make sure you adjust the strap correctly, add a padding to it if you can and most importantly, do not twist your body when using it.

Highly recommend brushless mower as these can automatically adjust the power to match the grass resistance. Am using the double battery steel deck brushless and it easily covers 100sqm on 2 X 4ah batteries.

  • There was a deal 2x 4Aah including charger for $99.00 dollars before xmas.

which one is a better mower?
    a) Ozito PXC 2 X 18V Cordless Lawn Mower Kit $279
    b) Ozito PXC 18V Brushless Lawn Mower Kit

    • Not sure if this a rhetorical question but that's basically the last question I'd like answered.

      • i'm shopping for a mower. just need to know if the extra $80 is worth it. not convinced with an electric mower due to the electrical cable.

Ozito doesn't publish torque and power outputs for these 2 models.

your sentence comes across as passive-aggressive. chill mate. you are not the only one shopping for a suitable lawn mower on a budget.

        • Depends on the size of your lawn and how often you mow. If you mow frequently (i.e. weekly) and/or have a small lawn (< 60sqm), the 18V brushless will work.

        • Sorry - didn't mean to sound passive-aggressive. I honestly thought by your comment that you might have been implying one was obviously better than the other (which I now know you weren't).

          Cheers.

Do you have plans for other cordless power tools, or have any already? I’ve found ozito power tools OK, but Ryobi better and makita better again. I’d spring for Ryobi mower/trimmer if planning on getting more tools and use the batteries in both.

    • Don't think we'll need anything else at this stage. Maybe a blower down the track but the paved area is so small I could just sweep it.

      • Was thinking more along the lines of drill, saw etc.

I find the blower really handy, takes seconds to blow clippings off the path back into the grass.

        I was the same..

        Now I have a
        mower
        line trimmer
        Blower
        Drill
        Reciprocal saw
        Pole pruner
        Grass shears
        Hedge trimmer
        Inflator
        Glue gun
        Edger
        Circular saw
        Sander.

  • The line trimmer doesn't come with a battery but I figured I could use the batteries from either mower with it - is this correct?

Have you read some of the 1-star reviews on the line trimmer?

Here is one comment that is somewhat consistent:

This machine has a major issue with the spool. Unless you want to stop and refeed the line through the head every minute or so, buy a different machine. Tried multiple different lines with no success. Will throw this machine in the bin where it belongs.

Maybe Erin doesn't know what the hell she is doing, but Toby above her mentions the same issue.

    • It's true. The bump spool doesn't work. Might be because there is too much friction on the plastic spool or the line is wound too tightly. The line doesn't break that easily tho, so I am ok with manually feeding. Still a great line trimmer.

I have the Ozito lawn mower - I live in a small house on a small-ish block (400sqm) and if I'm quick I can do it in one go. My partner is a lot slower so he ends up splitting up the front yard and backyard. They charge relatively quickly - you can start in the morning, charge them, then finish the rest off in the arvo.

I also have the Ozito line trimmer + all my power tools -> they are cheap and do the job for a very amateur "handywoman" like me, but probably unsuitable for a tradie lol

edit: I got the Mower 2 and yes - the batteries are compatible with the line trimmer. I think there was a package deal with a leaf blower as well if that interests you (it didn't for me lol)

It's about 10 square metres in the front and 60 square metres out the back.

Just get a sheep or a goat instead…

  • I wanted the 2x 18V brushless steel deck mower by Ozito but it seems they've withdrawn it? It's still on the Ozito website but not Bunnings…

Aldi have deals coming up for their Ferrex 2 x 20V mower on the 8th Jan. Watch Bunnings for a price drop, may be in store, and not online.
