WaniKani is an online Japanese vocab and Kanji learning service which uses spaced repetition. Great for those who are studying Japanese or are aiming to sit the JLPT (WK apparently covers a large amount of the JLPT vocab / Kanji / daily use Kanji).

Have used it for just under a week now and love the interface and find it a fun way to learn. They do a once a year sale - I bought it as it should be a good way to keep my kanji / vocab level up :)

    Just use Anki, it’s free

Once you start using Anki you can use it for so many other things.

  • I use Duolingo + Yomiwa app (excellent btw)

Finished level 60 this year, and made it to 7500 burn items. Took me 5 years. I was paying $45USD a year, so I recommend this lifetime membership. I was doing 10-12 levels per year. After level 30, i started using the scripts.

Now I've moved onto anki. That took about a week to get used to in comparison. I will miss wanikani.

I also recommend Migii JLPT app on android and IOS. Its great for training for JLPT.

    • What scripts did you end up using? I’m only level 12 and am already drowning. I’ve been putting it off for months now and it’s only gotten worse. Think I got an email this morning saying that we don’t instantly fail all the words we mistype so that might help a bit

        pretty much everything here.

And just do it everyday. For the last 5 levels, I was doing my wanikani in the first 30 minutes of my day, going for speed. It became a part of success for studying getting it done, and it freed up so much more time in the rest of the day. I used to spend 2 hours doing 120 reviews getting distracted along the way.

    • How’s your Japanese now after 5yrs? I’ve just passed my 1 year mark myself

      • Im waiting on N3 results at the end of January. I've lived in Japan 6.5 years now. I've got a lot of basics, and none of the complex stuff. Because of study for N3, I am really good at reading now, and Wanikani helped me with the 2000 kanji, but there is a lot they also dont have, which is why anki is great.
easyjapanese.net has all of the NHK news stories, and i recommend you practice listening and shadow reading, and reading aloud. It will get your speed up. I also learned how to work with Japanese friends and family to practice together and learn intonation and new vocabulary.
I can converse fine, but I make a tonne of mistakes. It's all a part of the process and I'll be studying for decades. Stay consistent and just do it.
