digiDIRECT Marketing Team Did Their Job Properly and Got Me to Spend More Money

Totally lost with their tricks: They just offered an extra 5% universal code in addition to their 15% shop promotion while I spent over $8k on boxing day for the gears and equipment, now I am overly paid $400+ for their new promotion. Called and no support, and no return/repurchase scheme. What really pissed me off is they used "Our biggest discount" before this additional code. Id call it misleading as it makes me feel like there wont be any other discounts.

Now with the new code it says "our biggest discount got EVEN bigger". So previously its not "biggest" !!!!!!!! Bunch of idiots from their marketing team only to piss customers off.

Guess I will never buy anything until the last minute of the year in the future or discount below 20%
Seems these retailers make more than 30% on cameras as 20% discount is common.
Hope this helps community by saving more.

Right, so you overpaid for photography equipment because you failed to do your homework, and fell for the usual 'sale' trick?

    Hand in you OZB membership……

    • While I now have trust issue with words

Hard to understand your complaint, but I think you are saying if a shop says this is our biggest discount ever, you never want them to offer a higher one?
That doesn’t seem like a good plan. I’d always be hoping for stores to offer more discounts in future.

I am guessing the rest of the message means you tried a change of mind return to buy a second time with a bigger discount, but the store declined.
They can certainly do that, there is no rule against it. A small number of stores allow it, but you will see they are rarely price leaders, usually service leaders like David Jones.

    • Of course I want bigger discount if I havent purchased yet,

Newsflash! Marketing department made you spend more at a company then you wanted …

Coping Strategy: Research your purchases, watch prices from multiple sites for multiple months … It's not hard to get a "good price" when informed ;)

yeah yeah they did a good job on that but I dont appreciate as a customer lol

  • There was a guy next to me in store who bought $5k roughly. Hope he didnt check his email box

    • Suggest taking this as a learning experience, be happy with what you've bought, and derive enjoyment from their use.

      • Yeah I will, its still better than Jb's price. Was the best price until this code

  • Wait, so you overspent 5% or 20%?

    • 5% on $8k base, I could buy myself a tripod for that saved amount:(

  • So you bought on boxing day and you're mad that things are now cheaper. Just refund and rebuy the items?

This is just how it is, check if they have any price match/price guarantee as it is still within 7 days.

    • nah they dont hope to share this code with community

  • There will always be a bigger discount, just depends when.

I see nothing wrong with the wording - "Our biggest discount" implies they have never had a bigger storewide discount before, not that they won't increase it in the future.
While 20% may be common on cameras, it's not often storewide. They will almost always have exclusions. So unless you have proof they have done a 16% storewide before, they are not false advertising.

More than likely they had a lower sales period than expected over Christmas, so they increase the discount after a lacklustre boxing day to get rid of excess stock and get customers who purchased a camera to come back and get the lens they couldn't afford. They make less profit, but get more purchases.

I still don't understand people that complain something got cheaper after they purchased. If you're unhappy but need it straight away, discounts later wouldn't affect the purchase. If you buy now and didn't need it straight away, then you were obviously happy to pay the price. If you weren't happy with the price you paid, you shouldn't have paid that amount.

If you're upset about them getting a 30% markup, don't even ask about the markup that's on clothing, cosmetics and food/drink.

  • Its just marketing puffery. Like a cafe advertising the best coffee in the world. You cant really take the advertisement to heart.

Can you please change the title to "digiDirect marketing team did their job properly and got me to spend more money"…

  • Similar to when you add something to your cart, but don't checkout. Then a day or 2 later you get a discount voucher as an incentive to complete the sale, has happened to me a few times

I have no idea what your complaint is - you agreed to pay the amount you paid for the goods you received and at the time of purchase, you were happy with the price.

Case closed. How much your goods are the day after is irrelevant. If prices went up, would you pay back Digidirect the difference?

mate I have a big sale code for digi direct i can sell ya
but I'm stuck in an oil rig and trying to get an heritenace

if you send me 1k I'm sure I can clear this up and give u that code where u will save millions

    like ssuper cheap br0
once in a life time super cheap

also while u at it can you take the never ending story to court can't believe it ended. what a rout

  • Sounds like you've got your gear though? That's a win there already - search through their threads and you'll see people get the run around and still not have their order after many months even though it was apparently available and in stock

  • DigiDirect are more like dodgy-direct tbh. Price-jacking before sales, not price-matching because digi-direct has no stock, sending old stock instead of updated new stock.

In any case, what did you buy?

  • Ha mate, I got my entire setup a day before they jacked the Sony Cashback to 10%, from 2%.

I'd done all my research, and bought at historic low prices for the lenses, but failed to account for cashback.

In my case, I also needed the gear ASAP as my previous setup was stolen, so I guess the amount I lost is the cost of renting a camera for 3 weeks.

    C'est la vie.

  • I work for a USA company and have had the odd person complain when we just discounted a product after they purchased it. We just immediately refund them the difference and send them a 10% discount voucher as well. They are only $50 products, but I'm sure all retailers work on similar margins. We usually discount to below cost as well but assume our advertising also results in much increased full price purchases in effect cross subsidising promotions. The extra discount voucher usually results in anther sale… win win for all parties. In short contact them and state your case politely, saying you are disappointed you just missed out…

    • Oh, this is DigiDirect, they don't budge.
