Re-Activate Expired Pre-2019 Coles Group & Myer Gift Cards for a Further 3 Months @ Giftcards.com.au via Phone/Email

2581

PSA. If you have old expired gift cards that fall under giftcards.com.au (e.g. coles myer), you can call through to their helpline and they will un-expire your cards for another 3 months.

This can't be done online.

I just did this for three old cards I found.

Cards include:
Coles myer group
Bunnings
Airbnb
Officeworks
Kmart
The Good Guys
And more (see website).

The number to call you'll find via their website. For ease, It is 1300304990. Success has also be found using email, by contacting [email protected].
Warning do not provide PIN via email, just provide card number.

Hope this helps someone else, it was news to me and lovely to resurrect $180.

You have to give them the card number but you don't have to supply the PIN.

    • The responses from ozbargainers is actually quite shocking assuming the rest of the general public is less money savvy.

I’ve never had a giftcard expire and I churn thousands every year, from a variety of companies.

I think a bit trap for many is when they are received as gifts, rather than purchased at a discount with intent to use quite quickly.

When I receive them as gifts I usually forget about them, as they are a very forgettable gift that I didn't plan to buy something with in the first place.

While it seems generous that Coles ressurects dead gift cards, their main competitor Woolies doesn't have expiry dates on their gift cards. (Nor does JB Hifi or Bunnings for that matter). Really should be the way forward.

Woolworths Group’s Bonus Store gift cards expire within three months from the date of issue. However, you’d only get those types of gift cards as a bonus for a promotion (e.g. a Prezzee promotion, signing up to a new utilities account through Econnex).

Woolworths Group’s Refunds cards also expire within 99 years from the date of issue, but I’m really nitpicking at that point lol.

      • What are these Woolworths Group's Refund cards? Are they the normal Woolies gift cards - which they issue as a refund when you pay the initial transaction using a giftcard? Or is it a different type of card?

        • +2

My apologies, they’re actually called Returns cards, not Refunds cards!

Returns cards (with a card number starting with 628000 100 or 628000 110) are purple-coloured physical gift cards Woolworths, Woolworths Metro or BIG W stores may issue to you if you return an item to one of their stores in-person and you either:

          • Return an item with its original purchase receipt and staff notice you used a gift card (or multiple gift cards) as a payment method, or

          • Return an item without its original purchase receipt, but staff are able to find the original transaction on their POS system and notice you used a gift card (or multiple gift cards) as a payment method, or

          • Return an item without its original purchase receipt and staff cannot (or don’t want to) find the original transaction in their POS system.

Returns cards are only redeemable in-store or online at Woolworths (including Woolworths Metro) and BIG W (excluding BIG W Photos).

However, if you’re in the first or second scenario, you’ll actually rarely be given a Returns gift card, as Woolworths Group gift cards are reloadable (for refund purposes only). This means that the refund amount can be returned back onto the gift card used to pay for the purchase (or any Woolworths Group gift card redeemable at the store you’re at, it doesn’t have to be the gift card(s) you used for the original transaction). Staff will usually ask whether you already have a gift card on you and ask you to:

          • Enter the gift card number on the EFTPOS terminal, or

          • Present or scan the gift card barcode, or

          • Swipe the physical gift card on the EFTPOS terminal.

Staff may also return the refund amount onto a new Essentials gift card or WISH gift card, instead of a Returns card. It really depends on the type of gift cards stocked at the service desk of the store in question (as well as what staff have been trained to do).

Side note: because Woolworths Group gift cards are reloadable (for refund purposes), they are technically exempt from the gift card laws mentioned a few times in this post, which means they’re actually not obliged to follow the law and could set a one month expiry date on gift cards in the future or charge ridiculous fees if they wanted to. I guess Woolworths Group is being very consumer-friendly by having no expiry date on nearly all gift cards issued by them.

@WookieMonster: Thanks for the detailed info. I have never seen these Returns cards before and did not know that Wish cards, for example, are reloadable. In the past, for refunds, they always gave me a new Woolies/Wish card with the refund amount. For online Woolies shopping, they will always provide credit vouchers, and if you request, they will send out a new gift card instead.

            • +1

@bluesky: Most staff at Woolworths and BIG W don't actually realise that you can reload an amount onto an existing gift card, because it's not a common scenario and I doubt their training covers that scenario. However, I think the gift card you are using to reload the funds onto must:

              • Have a balance greater than $0, and
              • The available balance on the gift card plus the amount to be reloaded onto the gift card cannot exceed the gift card's opening balance.

I know for a fact that Woolworths' POS system tells staff to load the refund amount onto a gift card if you selected Gift Cards as the payment method at the checkout. I had a staff member say to me a while ago with surprise, "oh, the system is telling me the refund can go back onto a gift card. Do you have a gift card on you?" However, Woolworths staff at their discretion can override this and elect to have this amount refunded onto a debit/credit card or cash (and this happens a lot).

  • I have $100+ Catch giftcards that expired and Catch refuses to extend them. Has anyone else had success with Catch giftcards?

  • +2

Coles gift cards always have excellent customer service. I’ve had expired gift cards reactivated by them as well. I’ve also had 2 gift cards I lost replaced, luckily I kept all my receipts. One my toddler pinched and no idea where it disappeared to, another one dropped out of my pocket after shopping.

Should you really be at Ozbargain, If you cannot remember that you had GC's or never felt like using it? but all of sudden after 3 years wanna use it?

    • Yeah I reckon. It is easy to forget GC gifts though, as they are small, easy to misplace, and quite forgettable gifts if you weren't expecting it (and were expecting something physical).

  • I would avoid the Good Food gift card as well. In the middle of lockdown last year, I sent a polite email to them asking if my gift card expiry date could be extended, as it only had a week to go. They asked me to send all the gift card details, but surprisingly then refused my request as " they don't extend expiry dates for gift cards"!

    • :( try again if you still have it?

  • +3

It’s absurd that any gc expires. Pure cash grab, so it’s good to see them being reactivated.

    Thanks for the info OP!

  • Last year I found a expired Target card in this group . After a phone call they gaVe me 1 mth and I don't think its a deA LOR BARGAIN .

    cOMMON SENSE ?

    • It should be common sense, wasn't to me though, I usually assume that an expiry date is final (except for unopened milk these days, usually can get a few more days out of it).

  • +1

NSW law has had this condition since approx April 2018, a lot of these cards being reactivated might be under the fact they don't know place of purchase

  • They couldn't extend a Myer's issued gift card as they don't manage Myer's cards but said to contact the Myer's gift card team on 1300 398 226 which I did who where more than happy to extend the expiry also for another 3 months.

      Win! A nice amount?

      • +1

Enough to buy a new pair of sneakers, was disappointed as thought I had missed out on a deal a few days back trying to use the card which is when I found out the card had expired and was literally about to toss the card when I saw this deal, so indeed a win and happy days :)

    • I just called Myer and they wouldn't reactivate my cards unfortunately. They said that they would only reactivate them if they have just expired within the last 3 months.

    • I just tried to have Myer gift cards reissued on the 1300 398 226. The first agent told me that the gift cards expired in May 2016, and that they can only reactivate them within 6 years of the expiry date. I then spoke to the supervisor who was quite rude, who said there was no 6 year rule and that the first person should not have said that. She then said they were refusing my request to reactivate the cards, that there is no further avenue for me to complain and that I have to contact the "relevant government body" if I want to peruse the matter further.

We lost the gift cards in a move and only just found them recently.

  • Thanks, I just re-activated a $100 gift card I found attached to an old Payslip from Dec 2012. I was tidying up during Lockdown a few months ago and found it. I thought bugger, luckily I held on to it.
    Cheers.

    • Great to hear!

  • "Unfortunately there are not enough funds remaining on this card to be able to replace the card and the card was issued pre-2012."

    • What provider? Someone above had a 1999 card..

  • Still no luck trying to reactivate/replace a Universal Gift Card that expired about 6 months ago (originally tried 1 week after expiry & they said couldn't be done!).
Anyone had any success with Universal Gift Cards?

  • I found 2 RM Williams Gift Cards totalling $536 bought from the last AMEX Vogue credit in 2019 in my drawers that expired March 2021, rang them and she extended it to September 2022 without any issue. Phew!

    • No way! Epic!! That'll get you at least one boot! ;)

  • Tried emailing them about my Good Guys gift card (expired 2017), but they said they don't deal with third party and to contact The Good Guys. I contacted TGG and they said it's expired, then quoted me their terms and conditions.

    • +1

Oh :( I reckon try phone calling, seems to work a lot. Try calling a again if the first is unsuccessful, after a day or so if it's worth it, you may get someone who can reactivate for you. Emails are easier to refuse than a phone call.

      • No luck! The Coles guys seem willing to help for their stuff, but apparently The Good Guys are only available to purchase on their site, and anything regarding the actual use has to go through TGG directly. Checked their website and it says: "Each store credit has a dated period of validity, once this date has expired we are unable to extend these credits"

Thanks OP - just contacted Dymocks via online chat who kindly reactivated a 2018 GC for a year.

    • Awesome :)

Thanks OP - i went down the email route to [email protected] - got a instant reply to say it's been extended by 3 months!

    • Great news!!

Wow still works, had an expired card from October, emailed and given another 3 months to use it.

Thanks for the post, would of just throw it out otherwise.

    • Woo hoo!! Yeah would have been a shame!

  • +1

Hot tip. I got $125 on two cards extended, one 2020, one 2022 expiry. Was about to throw them out. Nearly instant response over email, took a few minutes to take effect.

  • +2

Still works. By email, I had 2x $500 eGift cards that had expired just 2 days ago.
I felt sick when I though that $1000 had slipped through my fingers by 2 days.
    Well done Coles!

    • +1

:O thats a lot of $$$, so glad! Make sure you spend them!

      • +1

I sold them on the Classifieds here (at a small loss) so I was happy.

  • +2

Still works, I just redeemed a $100 gift card that expired in October 2022.

    Thanks
