Great price on a Leatherman surge - seems to be much cheaper than any other retailer with local stock.

Personally prefer the wave series (have one in all black and one in stainless, loved them THAT much) but this is a decent price for surge

    • Had Waves, definitely a good tool but I've become a convert of the OHT in the last five years, spring-loaded pliers and one-handed deployment? Yes thanks!

      • +2

Oh damn must have been a more recent release , only just saw this one. Pretty awesome but hard to justify a third knife…

        • Yeah I know what you mean lol

        • +1

That's is not the ozbargain way

          Buy first. Justify later.

          That is the way

        • Got 4 Leathermans… Now 5

  • Any thoughts if I were to get this as my first leatherman?

    • +2

You'll be set until you lose it, if you do - great multi-tool, great warranty support, great price - buy it.

    • +2

it's a solid choice. personally, i like that it has scissors and two separate blades — straight edge and serrated.

and before too long, you'll be collecting multi-tools like they're eneloops

      • +3

Thank you for the advice! just bought one! Been eyeing a Leatherman for a while.

        • +1

i bought a leatherman free t2 (no, it wasn't "free" as the ozbargainer joke goes) and now i want the whole range lol

        • I bought my first one in 2019 after putting it off for years. I have zero regrets and use it all the time. Grats on the new LM.

      • I never saw the attraction on scissors on a tool. On my charge I swapped the scissors for a second bit driver.

The only thing sheath is not great. Mine desintegrated after a year or so

    • Any suggestions for an alternative? I’ve got a OHT sheath that’s starting to fall apart

      • +3

I have a OHT that I used for work. The sheath disintegrated in 12 months.

Look up Skinth. Very good quality. I've abused mine heavily 5 years and it's still brand new.

I optioned it up to store a proper knife, gloves, a pen and a torch.

        I got this one
        https://skinthsolutions.com/product/the-skinth-og/

Make sure you option the straps on the front flap. Makes life so much easier.

      • Depends on what you want. I got a leather sheath handmade by someone in QLD. It wasn't the cheapest, but I fully expect it to last as long as the Leatherman does.

These make awesome gifts, I gave my groomsmen and father in law engraved waves on my wedding day.

    • +1

      that's a brilliant idea! cheers

    • +2

Any good groom needs to give out molle sheaths to ensure the bridesmaids aren’t impregnated.

  • any recommendations on knife sharpeners?

    • +4

spyderco tri-angle sharpmaker. so quick and easy to use.

      • where did you get yours?

        • +3

knives online ebay shop for about $140, back when they had those regular 20% off selected sellers thing. was either 2020 or late 2019.

edit: just looked through my ebay history, and i bought in sept 2020: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/112005772731. model is called ys20.
if you have ebay plus, best price right now seems to be $174.50 :\

edit #2: $140.40 from globalgear.com.au with free shipping if you sign up as a member for free: https://www.globalgear.com.au/brands/spyderco-tri-angle-shar… they don't tend to have a lot of their items in stock, so it looks like a few weeks of waiting before it gets shipped out.

it comes with a CD of instructions but here's a good how-to video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s2DDpB8Pjho

        Cheers!

Oh cool. Haven't seen a leatherman deal in a long time. Miss those ebay sales way back.

    • +1

haha same. at the time i was so over it because of how regularly it happened. i'm sorry, ebay, i want those 20% off deals back!

  • bought this one in 2016, for the same price, a must have

  • Have had this since 2013 being used almost daily. Only thing that has broken was the (removable) saw attachment when I was over ambitious with a tree branch.

    • They'd probably fix that under warranty if you asked

      • +3

You can also just buy a new set Leatherman saw and file for the same price as postage. Also the bosch t shape saw blades also work as a replacement

        • +1

          Learned something new thanks!

    • Haha was a bit over ambitious with my Wave today and snapped the tip off the blade. I assume they sell blades separate but haven't looked into it.

      • +1

I don't think so. Leather man don't like seeking spare parts it seems. I have a skeletool that would be better with the non serated blade - but you can't buy then and they'll take legal action against people who sell aftermarket spares.

        • +1

Hmmm, this might be a bigger problem than I thought…

          • +2

@BartholemewH: They have excellent warranties. Fill out the online form, pay for postage to send it to them and they will post you a new one.

  • Bought one, thanks OP. Good bit of kit for field

If anyone is looking for a pouch/sheath I highly recommend Skinth Solutions. I've worn mine 5 days a week for 2.5 years so far and it's as good as day 1. Made in Canada. https://skinthsolutions.com/

  • I love leatherman. I have the free set (p4, k4, and t4), wish it was free though :(

i also have the tread tempo watch and tread bracelet for casual wear, since my wife doesn't like me walking around with my bulky sheath on my waist.

  • +3

    It's $244.50 for me

  • Coming up at $244.50

I have the Wave and a Marlboro special from back in the days, but I rarely use them and often wonder do "professionals" use them or more of a hobbyist thing?

You would expect professionals have full sets of dedicated tools for specific tasks, a professional using a multi-tool to get by seems highly unprofessional. :D

The home DIYers are unlikely to spend hundreds on a multi-tool. Then I can only think of tool collectors buying them.

    • +3

I carry a Leatherman on my Belt everyday, i also have a fully kitted out tool trailer with 'professional tools'. i Still use my leatherman all the time for odd bits and pieces when its quicker to just grab it off my belt then go get the proper tool for the job. It might not always be the best tool but it can be the most convenient. Partically when up a Ladder/scaffold/EWP.

      • +2

Fair enough, convenience is probably a common factor. Mine is in the drawer and I use it when I can't be bothered to go get proper tools.

    • +2

I use mine for PC repairs, work, bike riding, skateboard riding, occasional car things. I basically carry one everywhere I go. Being in a non trade field when I pull out a multi tool in IT I actually come across as more of a professional than the other guys who run around looking for a torx or Phillips.

    Hey all,
I own several leathermans and this is by far the best one. If you are comparing it to the OHT or wave then you have to realise the OHT is made for a very different purpose being as sole used in one hand so it doesn’t have as many tools (One Handed Tool). The wave is the old classic model and is smaller and off memory doesn’t have the adjustable bit kit.
I saw another comment about the sheath and I absolutely agree that it sucks but they do sell a leather pouch which has been on my belt as a technician used daily for the last 6 years so I would recommend the upgrade.
I have used or owned most of the main leathermans or have sold them as a retailer and the surge is my absolute go to. Hope this helps my fellow ozbargainers, cheers and happy New Years!

    • +2

      Thanks for the insight giant!

  • I carry an old LM wave on my adventure bike, on the molle panel of the tank bag. Super handy for carrying a multi tool on the bike, before getting the tool kit out.
I definitely would have got this, if not OOS.

    • +1

Funny you mention that, on one of our rides we found a stuffed toy on side of the road, I cable tied it to my top box. While looking for my tool roll, old mate pulled out his multi-tool to cut off the excess. It was done real quick, while I have mine in a drawer at home. :D
