I’ve been meaning to get on this.

  • +1

Oh man it has a HD remaster? What is it like?

    • +2

      Still square, hopefully.

    • Pretty good, 90s CGI is still 90s CGI, making it HD doesn’t really fix that. But it’s enjoyable to watch again

      • Well - 90's low budget CGI anyway (remembering that the incredible CGI in the original JP and T2 were also early 90's) :)

But yea the show is great, just have to overlook those CGI moments.

        • +5

iirc correctly, B5 CGI was made mostly using Amiga 2000s!

Crazy when you think about it.

            @SupeNintendoChalmers:

            mostly using Amiga 2000s!

Fitted out with NewTek video toasters if I remember correctly.

I had an Opalvision in my A3000T.

Those were the days. We'd have a good old laugh at all the new stuff Windows boasted about, because the Amiga was doing it for years …

Ahhh … the fond memories. Almost as useless as a BSOD 🤣

Short of re-doing all of the CG, it is a really good remaster. It appears they went back to the 35mm film for non-CG scenes, which means they look fantastic in HD. . The CG was not rendered in HD (not surprising for the 90s), and I understand they used some AI upscaling for those scenes. Its far from perfect.

The real abomination was the previously available DVD version (and what was previously available on digital). B5 was filmed in widescreen, for future-proofing. Unfortunately the CG was only ever done in 4:3. When they came to release the DVD, they had widescreen non-CG screens with extra information, but where there was CG, they cut the top and bottom off the CG, and upscaled it to make it widescreen. (They did some other things to make it even worse…). The result is CG scenes were really blurry, and lost information.

I wrote something about the remaster a while ago: https://medium.com/@colinmckellar_8270/babylon-5-remastered-…
I only had access to the SD version of the remaster at the time, and even that version looks much better than the previous digital/DVD version. The HD version looks so much better.

I also understand the sound has been much improved.

  • Does not included the separate TV Movies except the original pilot The Gathering.

  • New to iTunes.
    How do I purchase this?
    Do I receive discs?

    • +3

Streaming. Need an Apple account too.
Amazon only sells DVD's, so this must an iTunes "special" release that should make its way to Blueray.

  • +3

So $39.99 to rent it? I can watch it until such time as Apple tells me no more?

    • +1

Get you Bab5 NFT's at the apple store now.

    • I hear if you sail the seven seas you can find a buried backup copy.

      • I wish I could buy it. I manually ripped and copied the DVDs years ago (it took forever) and the cgi scenese are awful and have been looking to buy the legit version. I dont have itunes though.

    • I have all the DVDs and still bought this. The convenience of iTunes I just can’t match with dvd or digital files and VLC.

I’ve bought digital movies with a number of other providers, Sony and others I don’t recall and they’ve all since shutdown. In terms of companies supporting digital legacy of items I’ve purchased I’d trust apple over everyone - as their whole iTunes business model relies on this. Sonny’s etc where this isn’t core, have cut and run and then your stuffed.

    Want this on bluray

    Great maker

… was killed by the proliferation of shitty reality TV!

B5 was so good because it was written as a complete story. While they did screw it up by shortening it to 4 seasons, it still worked. The 5th season was not as good because it wasn't in the original story line.

TV these days is written for a single season, and then dumped if it doesn't perform well enough.

FYI - J. Michael Straczynski announced a reboot of Babylon 5 in September 2021 for The CW.

    • +1

It'll be interesting to see what they do with the reboot.

It's a shame they didn't decide to run with one of the many hooks we saw in the original, that would have still worked within the B5 universe, but not needed characters from the original show.

      • I agree. Why can’t they continue with the story, maybe 100 years in the future or something. It has so much potential doing an original show. Get a bit sick of Hollywood Continually making reboots.

        • Too many dead B5 cast members I suppose…

        • +1

          J. Michael talks about this at some length in this twitter thread - its a good read!

“You cannot step in the same river twice, for the river has changed, and you have changed.”

        • Yeah but since its the original creator, and this was the first long plot arc shows and he isnt going to tell exactly the same story I think we shouldnt jump to conclusions. He may make the show he always meant to make, sometimes its a matter of the right show / movie at the right time (like Lord of the rings)

        • Problem is they'll probably change the appearance of the Klingons and Romulans to suit what we're seeing in ST discovery etc.
I can't imagine Worf as looking not like Worf.

    Zathras approves of this deal.

    • Which one?

      • +3

Cannot say. Saying, I would know. Do not know, so cannot say.

        • Thought he was the one, but he not the one.

  • If I buy this on an iPhone, will it work on an iPad or an Apple TV? I believe in the past this wasn’t the case.

    • I think it will. There might have been something weird previously about copying it to you AppleTV but it’s all streamed now isn’t it?

    • Yes. Works everywhere you have an apple device. Remembers where your up to and picks up automatically when swapping devices

  • And so it begins.

    • +1

There is a hole in your mind.

  • Just a question, I have an apple id for an Ipad. Is this deal from Itunes itself or part of Apple TV. I do still have 4 mths left on apple tv that came with the device I really don't want to pay 40 bucks to "own" this if it still means a 12 dollar a mth itunes sub just to watch it

    • +1

This is iTunes which is separate from Apple TV.

  • OP is this deal still going? Showing as $89.99 for me now, at $40 I think I would've pulled the trigger.
