Alternatives to PayPal for Online Sellers?

I am a private seller wanting to sell an item to a buyer in Canada for $200 AUD.

The buyer paid via PayPal but much to my dismay PayPal put the funds on hold. They said this can be up to 21 days or until buyer confirms delivery of the item.

I don't want to risk using PayPal because my funds could be on hold indefinitely or the buyer could raise a dispute which means I would be out of pocket $200 + item value + O/S shipping costs!

I really don't trust eBay and PayPal's business models. I have already closed my eBay account last year, and only use PayPal for small value items when buyers don't want to pay via bank transfer. I sell mostly on FB market and gumtree.

I have looked into some international payment facilitators such as PaySend but they are not available in Australia.

Are there any viable alternatives to consider?

TIA :)

So you closed your PP account but buyer paid via PP. How does this work?

      Closed eBay account.

Pretty sure that's simply a scam, and you've not actually received any money via PayPal.

No, that's actually a feature of PayPal. If you're a first time seller or whatever the case may be the funds will be in your account but it'll be held until the buyer confirms delivery.

      • How times change. Not something I would be doing for a low value item to Canada.

Yeah, as long as you have provided PayPal with a tracking number the buyer generally can't dispute it. Once it is delivered just message PayPal saying it has been delivered and they'll generally process it for you.

  • Hmm. No use suggested that could be scam anyway?

    • sounds pretty scammy

You also need to bear in mind the only airmail parcel/package service that AusPost offer for Canada is via Courier, which starts at $99 for 500gm
They do offer a sea mail service but that will take 2-3 months for delivery

Oh wow, postage to Canada is exorbitant! I will need to cancel the sale now.

EDIT: I'm looking at Sendle and they can post to Canada for $26.95. That might be worthwhile. I don't know how they can be so much cheaper than AP though.

      • You probably should have researched postage cost before accepting the sale with a postage cost.

Op, so let me get this straight.

1 You sell something internationally without doing your research regarding freight costs and thus want to ask for more money after a buyer has accepted your offer of sale.

2 Provide a payment method you will not accept once a buyer has committed to buy, after you have an agreement for sale.

I feel sorry for anybody purchasing from you.
What would you think if someone pulled this kind of rubbish on you?
