  • Futu has slowly become dodgey dudes and dudettes

      They always were

      • Not in the early early days haha

This code also brings the 4TB Ironwolf down to AU $125.71, which isn't bad. The cheapest I saw was mwave.com.au for $119+shipping.

  • NAS newb here.

How is Seagate IronWolf compared to WD ones?

    • +3

Apparently WD Red Plus are quieter.
They're only $7.74 more from Shopping Express or gg.tech

      • Now an extra $10, just went up :(

I have 7 x 10TB ironwolfs in a Synology DS 2415, 3 of them have bad sectors. I also have 6 x 8TB WD reds in a Netgear ReadyNAS 316, they are all older than the ironwolfs. None of them have bad sectors. I personally wont buy Seagate again

      • @Okboomer & @pumpkinspice - just recently purchased a NAS so wondering if can mix and match the HDDs in my NAS? I already have 1 ironwolf, so can I purchase WD Red ones?
        thanx

Mine's a cocktail of Seagate Ironwolves and WD Shucked Whites

        • Only old 4TB drives in an old 4 bad Netgear NAS, but I've got 3x WD Reds (the old CMR ones before the SMR BS happened) and an Ironwolf added 4th drive in there for over a year now no dramas.

Honestly too, the one brand over the other stuff doesn't really matter atm so long as you get CMR and not SMR (and the latter are fine out of arrays for backups or general use PC rather than server/NAS use) - it is more at a given point in time one brand will have a dud model that fails for everyone. I had a bad Seagate run in the 2TB days, but before that had a bad WD run in something like the 500GB days. It is a per model rather than per brand thing, but people stick with what works for them, until eventually they get a dud that brand and switch.

          Yep, mix and match.

I don't know if it's still the case, but when I set up my first RAID (some 10 years ago), consensus was you should at least try to get HDDs from different batches, if not different models or brands.
Reason being, if they're all produced in the same batch, they may fail close together.
Preferably keep them the same (higher) speed though.

My NAS has 5 x 2TB drives and no two are the same models.

Mix and match away. Recently replaced one of the 3 Ironwolfs (the one with the most bad sectors) with a 10TB WD Red Pro, and the synology software took care of the rest. No dramas

        • +1

I try to keep the size of the drive the same at least

      • I've had the complete opposite experience myself. I think it's really just luck of the draw here.

Isn't Harris technology the one that some people reported they cancelled orders with eBay codes ?

    • +2

It was the $15 off promotion which meant to have a $100 min spend but an error was made and it applied to all items.
I don't blame them for canceling the orders, they'd be losing a lot of money and it was a genuine mistake.
However, the way the handled the situation was very poor. They could have just explained the error and canceled the orders and it would have been fine
Instead they lied about it being a coupon for a single member (which it obviously wasn't) and furthermore dressed up a $15 off $100 spend (i.e. the original promotion) as a "good-will gesture" (their exact words) which also looked like unique code but was quickly discovered to be a code anyone could use.

Just sharing my experiences with HT on how they sent their HDD. They all DOA. As the HDD (especially the Ironwolf) only have a anti-static bag without a box. They just packed the HDD in an auspost padded envelope. All the HDD I have order are DOAed.

I will never order from HT again for HDD at least.

    • Yeah that sux the wang.

    • That sucks. Did they send new drives to compensate?

    • +1

Mm. Well that certainly makes me far less likely to jump on this. Was thinking of grabbing 3 of these for a TrueNAS setup.

I think I'd rather spend a little more on properly packed drives, if that's how they're going to send them out.

    • same here - knew they were dead before i tested them but at least they sent replacements packed better without questioning it - they must be fully aware of how shit their fulfilment center is at packing things.

      • How many did you order that were DOA?

  • +2

Was waiting to pickup another to add to Synology 920, thanks!

    • Looking for the 920+ also!

  • Bit the bullet knowing it could be DOA. Paid using 3% cashback $250 ebay giftcard and $4.91. I bought the same drive last August for $285 from Amazon

  • Mind blowing expensive, exact same price I paid for 8TB to my door in early 2019.

    • What ?
This deal is live today - it hasn't been 2019 for 3 years 🤷🏼‍♂️

      • Exactly, embarassing prices have taken 3 years to get back to where they were.

These are also avaliable at Computer Alliance for $259.25, or an extra $4.24. Might be worth considering given others have stated their issues with HT's process of shipping these.
