  • I rang UTAS today. I've applied for the Undergrad and Diploma of Sustainability. There is only a fee of $47 per unit you need to pay that covers student fees like materials and admin stuff. With the HECS debt being wavered, it starts from the day you start the course. So the Diploma is 1-3 years to complete. As long as the Diploma is completed within the maximum of 3 years there is NO HECS debt.
I'm glad I called them to get the right info. He told me that I better get the application in ASAP as it takes them five week to review the applications. By then they will be almost ready to start the first semester.

    • +1

      FAQ says:
"Do I have to pay a Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF)?"
No. We are also waiving the Student Services & Amenities Fee (SSAF) for units studied in Undergraduate Certificates in 2022.

So maybe only diplomas charge it.

    • +1

      I think that's wrong

2020 and 2021 intake there was no SSAF

This is dependent on the subjects.

  • I intend to do a Jobtrainer certificate at my local tafe this year, can I do this simultaneously without jeopardising the free Jobtrainer course/funding?

  • +1

It appears that the Diploma of Dementia Care is 8 units but still 100% HECS Free

  • In order to get the HECS waiver are we e supposed to sign up for the scholarships/financial aid section in the application? Or is the HECS waiver separate

    • +4

The HECS waiver will be automatically applied for you - you won't need to complete that additional section :)

      • thank you! saved me and UTas a phone call

      • I just received my offer of Diploma of Sustainable Living for a CSP.

The enrollment page ask for HELP form to be completed in estudent. But this is not necessary for HECS waiver? Thanks for confirming this based on my offer type.

        • +4

Yes, you do need to complete the HECS-HELP form because your offer is for a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) which, as someone else mentioned earlier, is where the Government subsidises part of your course fees. The amount remaining is called the Student Contribution amount (the amount you would normally either need to pay up front or defer to HECS) and this is what the 100% HECS fee waiver is applied to.

Completing the Commonwealth Assistance/HELP form (eCAF, as it is commonly referred to) is a condition of your enrolment in the course and MUST be completed (again, this form is not related to the fee waiver on offer). As there will be no fees to defer/pay, you do not need to put your tax file number on the form, you can just tick the box that says you do not want a HECS-HELP loan. See this article on the UTAS website: https://askus.utas.edu.au/app/answers/detail/a_id/1788/kw/fe…

          • @SimbaGirl: Do I have to do this for the undergrad certificate or is this only for the diploma. Nowhere during the enrolment process did this come up so thank you for sharing that

            • +2

@[Deactivated]: You have to do an eCAF for every course, regardless of level - it used to be a step in the enrolment process that you needed to complete the eCAF before the system would allow you to enrol via eStudent, but they had some system issues and were also awaiting changes to the eCAF early last year, so they changed it so students could go ahead and enrol, then complete the eCAF later and that's still the case as far as I'm aware.

The eCAF is still a compulsory requirement for CSPs, and if you don't complete it, you will eventually get a reminder (or several) that you must do it by the census date or your enrolment will be cancelled.

              • @SimbaGirl: Thanks for the tip, I was having trouble understanding what needs to be done to ensure that my course fee will be 100% waived. I assume the form you mentioned is the "Request for a Commonwealth supported place and a HECS-HELP loan"?

On the form, it asks for Unique Student Identifier (USI) which seems to be different than student identification number, which already pre-filled in the form. Do I need to go to https://portal.usi.gov.au/student and create my USI or is it already created for me?

                Thanks

                • +2

@Blackcat2: yes, that’s the form I’m referring to. Again, just to confirm, this form does NOT relate directly to the 100% fee waiver, it is for the CSP and the accompanying partial Government of the course fees. The HECS fee waiver is something that will be applied separately on your student record by the Fees team at UTAS, you don’t need to apply for/fill out a form for this.

And yes, you will need to obtain a USI. These have existed for a while, and students who have studied at TAFE or done other courses at training institutions over the past few years will probably have one already. The Government introduced the USI requirement for all students commencing a uni course from the start of 2021 onwards, so you need to go to the website you’ve mentioned and create your USI. The intention is that all students will eventually have a USI which they will use with any training institution, university etc that they study at. I think continuing students already in a course (i.e. had commenced the course prior to January 2021) need to have one by 2023 or thereabouts. It is NOT the same as your student ID number with UTAS, that is generated by the university and will usually appear on correspondence such as offer letters etc (it’s a 6 digit number).

                  Hope this helps :)

                  • +1

@SimbaGirl: Thanks so much for the help :)

                    • +1

@Blackcat2: Just realised in my post above it should say "accompanying partial Government SUBSIDY of the course fees" - missed a word out LOL

                      And you're most welcome :)

                      • @SimbaGirl: Do you know when the fee waiver is applied? I done all HECS-Help form but still showing that I owe $3600 in fees including some for SSAF. I presume it'll take some time but before course start? I feel I've done everything that's needed

                        • +3

@[Deactivated]: The fee waiver will be applied before the census date of the first study period you're enrolled in. For example, if you're enrolled in a Semester 1 unit, the census date is 22 March. See this link for an explanation re census dates https://askus.utas.edu.au/app/answers/detail/a_id/1517/~/wha…. Keep in mind there are usually a LOT of these fee waivers which need to be applied, so it can take some time. If your student record is still showing fees about a week before the census date, get in touch with UTAS so they can follow up. Once the waiver is attached to your student record, it will apply automatically to any further units you enrol in for 2022.

Disclaimer: I used to be associated with UTAS, but am not any more, however the OzB system will now not allow me to post here (and, I assume, in any other deals related to UTAS) unless I tick the "I am associated …" box. I was going to refrain from commenting because of this, but didn't want to ignore your question :). I note it has now marked all my posts as "Associated".

                        • @[Deactivated]: Has your waiver been applied? Mine still hasn't

                          • +2

                            @tikei: No, still not waived.
I did get 2 calls from utas student support and they've reassured me that it will be, but wait until closer to census date in March.

                          • @tikei: It is now waived. Hope yours too.

      • I'm confused as this advice looks like it contradicts SimbaGirl advice? or is there a difference in getting the HECS waiver for Undergrad certs vs Diplomas?

        My scenario is:
        - AU permanent resident
        - Applied and was accepted for Undergrad Cert in Applied Technology
        - Enrolled into the units, and on eStudent it's showing I own ~$4k

Do I need to do anything else?

        • +3

See this page on the UTAS website re eligibility for the 100% HECS fee waivers for these job-ready certificates, and permanent residents are included if they will be resident in Australia during their course - https://www.utas.edu.au/study/certificates/faqs/considering-…

Again - if you are in a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP), which will be stated on your offer letter, you MUST complete the
“Request for a Commonwealth supported place and a HECS-HELP loan” (eCAF). There are multiple links and articles on the UTAS website on how to complete the form, depending on your circumstances.
          - the eCAF is NOT related to the 100% HECS fee waiver on offer, the waiver is a separate thing and if you are eligible will be applied to your student record by the Fees Team. Your eligibility for the waiver was assessed during your application for the course, you do NOT need to apply for it separately.
          - Due to the sheer volume of waivers that need to be put on to the system, this may not happen until closer to the census date so yes, it is likely that fees for the enrolled units will appear on eStudent for a while until the waiver is added to the student record.

          • @SimbaGirl: Thanks this helped a lot! First time studying at a uni in Australia so lots of new stuff navigate.

            • @Steve-o: You're welcome :)

  • Any ozBargainers signed up for Undergrade Certificate of Applied Technologies and get accepted?

Wanted to start have a chat with fellow students! Trying to work out whether 2 units per semester can be done?

    • Hi there! Yep enrolled in applied technologies and planning to do 2 units per sem as well. Just a question, are all your units showing up for you (3 core - 1 elective) as the core ZAT111Computer Networks isn't showing up for me?

      • +1

Computer Networks weren't showing for me either a couple of days ago but logged in this morning and it was there.

    • Enrolled for cert of applied tech as well. I know nothing about computers!
Does this give u any credentials or just looks good on the resume?

  • +1

I got my offer for Diploma of Sustainable Living today as well. Looks like many classmates here :) Maybe worth create a OZ-UTAS group somewhere?

    • I got my offer yesterday. Just picking out the units today

  • just got my offer today. 5 day turnaround, not too bad

  • +1

Applied for the Diploma of Sustainable Living on the 5th and got an offer today. I confirmed with admin that the whole course is 100% HECS waived.

Picking my electives now and looking forward to it!.

    • So no additional forms to complete aside from accepting the offer?

    • Do you know how much time we have to complete the diploma? Thought I could finish it in 1 year. Currently doing 3 units concurrently and it's a bit too much.

  • +1

Received my offer today too. Applied for both UG Cert and Diploma Sustainable Living, prefer UG Cert which I’ve been offered. Can anyone advise, is it possible to upgrade to Diploma in future if I enjoy the UG course? Don’t want to overcommit.

Thanks OP. My dad is in TAS and has been struggling to find work (Qualified carpenter and was in a high position with one of Australia largest building firms, before leaving sydney). I've been trying to motivate him to do an adult IT course as he struggles with computer, and therefore he having issuing getting work. He's great with construction and we have a small farm, where he hopes to one day live off the grid. The Certificate in Sustainable Living sounds like gold and will require him to improve his IT skill (he has people around to help) and looking at aspects of housing, Gardening and Fishing (he loves all these things), this deal is likely to change his life for the better.

He hasn't worked much in the last 7 years (since moving to Tas, due to lack of computer skills / unwilling to do an adult IT course) and this may very well completely change his life.

Thank you, from my heart OP.

  • Hi guys, im looking to enrol in undergraduate certificate of applied design,
has anyone studied this before how was it?
when you have completed applied design certificate , will you have skills to get a job in graphic design or similar, or even a junior position job,
im not planning to do a degree,
haveing hard time chooseing to study this or applied technologies as i do like to get into coding also, what would be better to enrol in

  • Hmmm thinking about the Diploma of Sustainable Living, I have an Environmental Engineering degree from 15 years ago and work in a more straight forward environmental management role. Everything seems to be going down the sustainability path lately and probably not the worst thing to add to my CV.

  • Has anyone studied “ Antarctic and Climate Science”? Interested in any feedback on the units :)

  • Has anyone tried to install Office for Windows or Mac with your UTAS student account? Apparently there’s no license for Office for desktop apps so you could only use the mobile versions.

    • +2

I was able to get it on my Mac.

  • +1

Thanks OP just applied to Diploma of Sustainable Living - fingers crossed I'll get an offer soon.

  • After enrolling, are there any other steps to get the 100% HECS Waiver? Looked around but wasn't able to find any concrete information

    • Have a look at SimbaGirl's comment above. I believe you need to fill out the eCAF form

  • Diploma of Sustainable Living. Trying to enroll courses now. Can I enroll 1 core and 4 units for this year first and leave the remaining core and electives later to next year, since the course is 1.5years ? Currently can’t enroll for 2023.

    • That's what I did online. Some units are only offered at certain times. I only enrolled in three units to start with. Two are in semester one and one starts in April for 11 Weeks. Just want to see what the work load is around my one year old before I over commit. You have three years to finish it at least

      • My concern is about the 100% HECS waiver, which says is waived for 2022. Then how about the units enrolled in 2023/2024, are they free or need to pay?

        • -1

why dont you just do it all in 2022?

          • @Big Lenny: There are 8 units in total, i think that'll be too much while I'm still working full time.

            • @juntz: I did it.

Works out to 2 units a semester. There are also some early and later starts too. Like October courses.

            • @juntz: Do you know how much time we have to complete the diploma and still get the fee waiver? Thought I could finish it in 1 year. Currently doing 3 units concurrently and it's a bit too much.

  • +1

Got my offer today and accepted it!

    • how long did you wait for the offer? Mine has been a week

      • +1

        Applied on 4/1, accepted 14/1.

      • Have you got your offer yet?

  • Spoke to someone at the University about the Diploma of Sustainable Living as I wasn't sure if I should commit to the Diploma or just do the Undergraduate Certificate. I know some others have commented that the fee waiver applies to the whole course and not just the units completed in 2022. I can confirm that this is also what I was also told. I also asked if you met the requirements of the Undergrad Cert can you drop out of the Diploma and just be awarded the Certificate, the answer was yes.

    • +1

So… I received a reply from an email I sent last week (I called this morning because I hadn't heard back). The email says the fee waiver is only for the units studied in 2022. Now I am not really sure what is covered and what is not.

      • Do you know how much time we have to complete the diploma and still get the fee waiver? Thought I could finish it in 1 year. Currently doing 3 units concurrently and it's a bit too much.

  • Forgive my ignorance but how is the diploma free? I thought only 4 units are covered in HEC waiver but you need 6(or 8) units to complete the diploma. Which means you need to pay for the one not covered? am I missing anything here?

    • NVM, called UTA today and they confirmed the course is all free.

      • Do you know how much time we have to complete the diploma and still get the fee waiver? Thought I could finish it in 1 year. Currently doing 3 units concurrently and it's a bit too much.

    • Doesn't say that anywhere. Not even in the post.

  • +1

I accidentally signed up for the undergrad, intending it for the Diploma and was accepted.
From what I can read, courses for 2022 are waived. So that means if I do the diploma, i'd probably need to pay for the courses i do next year?

    What i gathered is:
    - Diploma = 2 core subjects + 6 electives (completed in 1-3 years)
    - UG = 1 core subject + 3 electives (completed in 6-12 months)

Maybe its worth completing the UG just to see how I juggle all my commitments….

    • Id go the diploma just in case

      • +1

Not sure why i was downvoted…

I might just go with the diploma like you say - the electives do look interesting.

    • UTAS replied saying it’s unsure yet if units enrolled in 2023 will be 100% waived. HECS waiver is usually confirmed end of each year. So I think there’s a risk that units in next year are not free. But doing all 8 units in this year is too much for me.

  • Just a quick question if anyone has a similar experience, I have enrolled in the Associate Degree in Applied Technologies, according to the CSP waiver, the first 4 subjects should be free. However I have also applied for HECS help, The Uni told me my fee will be deferred. Does that mean I still get the first 4 subjects free or not? Does anyone know ?

  • Fyi, free bunch of 4 to 5 week courses at CSU

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/678491

  • Trying to decide between Applied Technologies or Applied Design… Currently working in Product Mgmt.
Has anyone signed up to either?

  • +2

Does anyone elses showed up as $4100 owed for a certificate? I wouldn't be doing this UG Cert if it wasnt free.

    • +2

Have you submitted the "Request for a Commonwealth supported place and a HECS-HELP loan" form?

I reckon just keep and eye on it as the census date approaches, and withdraw if it turns out you aren't eligible by then.

      • Yeah I did. Will probably do that. Thanks

  • still not approved after applying on the 10/01

    • Similar boat. Hopefully they haven’t hit their cap yet.

      • I applied after that and was accepted the next day.

        • Was this for the undergraduate certificate in sustainability?
I might give them a call on Monday.

  • +1

Thanks for sharing. But i dont quite get it. Does it mean that you get to study Undergrad Certificate Applied Technologies for free? Without any fees?
    Thanks again.

    • seems like it - i've applied

  • Anyone know whether Data and Environmental Management would be available online??

I've emailed the course coordinator Son Tran, but he doesn't reply.

  • I was going to apply for the Undergraduate Certificate in Applied Technologies but will it allow me as I have a degree in Business/IT already? When you click apply it says Apply here if you're a domestic student, haven't studied at university before, or haven't completed a degree.

Associate Degree in Applied Technologies is only the first 4 units covered.

  • My invoice still shows the full amount. Have lodged an enquiry a week ago but no updates on it. Anyone else's invoice shows full amount?

    • did you lodge a hecs form?

    • Yep, after having filled out the HECS form it's still showing the full amount! I guess we've gotta keep a close eye on it and if it doesn't go away before the census date (22nd March) we drop it.

      • I contacted them and they finally updated my invoice after a few prompts.

        • Wow, silly we have to chase up on it. Did you contact them over the phone?

  • +1

Can you do this course "Community Care" by under-loading? I wouldn't mind doing this to improve my general knowledge but 2 subjects per semester seems a bit hectic. I can definitely do 1 subject per semester.

    • you risk it not being free next year

  • For all you new students… I’m currently on an Apple Music free trial and just signed up for $5.99 student rate when that finishes. Didn’t realise that it includes free access to Apple TV+! Apparently you get both for at least a year.

  • Hi does anyone who did the Applied Technologies course know if you have to attend the 6hr workshop? I can't attend during work hours.

  • +1

    financial overview now zero. woo!
