is humble bundle still going strong? there's only 1 game bundle on at the moment… normally they have 4 or 5 concurrent ones going… hope they drop a good bundle soon….

    • +12

IMO they have really gone to shit since IGN bought them out.

    • +2

normally they have 4 or 5 concurrent ones going

That's not a normal occurrence, they have 1-2 going at once and then there's sometimes a couple more but 4-5 was never the norm.

      • +1

fair enough… the last time i checked the site (probably a month or 2 ago) they had 3 or 4 concurrent deal going, so thought that was the norm…. there's only a fishing bundle atm…. guess i'll check again next week…

        • Usually a book bundle, and sometimes training or similar as well.

          • +2

@mskeggs: If you're counting the book bundles, those are very common, often 2 a week or more and they last at least 2 weeks generally more. Then with the 'software' bundles which includes a variety or things from normal application software to content creation assets to training videos, those generally have 1-2 a week too and again last at least 2 weeks often more. Over the past 1-2 years, they've also had the tendency to "extend" them at least once, sometimes more then once. Sometimes this is a few minutes before the bundle ends, sometimes a few days before. Sometime they actually end the bundle then reopen it and extend it.

If you're only speaking of games, I don't know if I'd entirely agree with Kozhutki, I think 1 at once is somewhat rare. Most of the time they have at least one a week and they last 2 weeks. Sometimes more than 2 weeks but a loss less often it's more than 2 or extend than with games or software. Net result being I'd say it's far close to 2 or 2+ ongoing at one time. But I do agree 4-5 at one time is rare.

However the current lull isn't unexpected either. They always do that during the major Steam sales especially the end of year Steam sales. Occasionally even no bundles ongoing. There are also occasionally lulls at other times too. People tend to say it's dying or are surprised then this happens but I'd say it's been like this for at least 5 years, before IGN. Really lulls during the major Steam sales aren't particularly surprising.

            • @Nil Einne: that's a fair point…. i guess it's harder for a bundle to compete with the steam/epic sales (in terms of value and being able to choose the exact games you want)….

Humble is, in my opinion, still pretty solid. Focus is more on indie games with the monthly choice these days, and is worth the purchase more often than not. They still do good bundles every month or two and I regularly buy from there.

However it does seem to be popular practice to claim it's not very good anymore.

      • +1

I think it's still a good value proposition too but everyone does love to poop on it. To be fair the bundles were spectacular when Humble was first starting out so it's having to live in a shadow of its former self, and with Game Pass taking a lot of the games and offering them for free (if you have Game Pass) we don't get as many AAA titles or new releases.

I still regularly buy bundles too but IGN does piss me off and I don't trust them now that they've cucked the charity sliders

        • +1

Yeah the sliders business didn't sit well with me. I always set them back so charity gets the lion's share.

      • this month HC is a BANGER tho. I went through the games, and I was interested in all of them. Does not happen often. Midnight Protocol in particular has me interested, as it reminds me of the Spybot game from the Lego site back in the day.

  • +3

Yeah last month was just barely worth it, I went to pause and saved 2USD by retaining it that month.
Not sure if there’s a limit on that trick but the last two months prior I just paused straight up… it’s gone downhill from the days we’d get Spyro, Tomb Raider, and possibly even human fall flat… I forget.

The point I’m making is it mostly sucks these days

    • I forgot to pause last month, but i didnt make that mistake this time.

      • +1

I've done this before, they will refund you pretty quickly if you haven't revealed any steam keys

        • thanks, ill give it a try

        • damn really, I didnt realise and just would go through getting the keys even though i didnt want that bundle.

    • +1

Yeah last month was just barely worth it

Always laugh when this is said. Last months for me was significantly better than this one.

and possibly even human fall flat… I forget.

An indie game, which there's always plenty in the bundles, so, what's the issue?

    • I got offered $4USD off to not pause my sub this month… still not worth it. Only thing keeping me from cancelling completely is the grandfathered plan I'm on

      • I read that if you pause a month and go to pause a second month you'll always recieve the $4 off offer

        • I read that if you pause a month and go to pause a second month you'll always recieve the $4 off offer

That's probably right… I've taken up like one bundle in the last two dozen so I do two months in a row quite often hah

      • I'm on the same plan. It used to be that the games were announced, then maybe a week later you were billed giving plenty of time to decide to pause / skip. Now it seems like they bill you and announce the games.. making it a gamble to pause since you don't knwo what you are skipping… or am I missing where they give notice on the upcoming games?

        • AFAIK there's no gamble under Humble Choice. You have about 20 days from today to pause before you're billed. Most likely, if you've already been billed something went wrong. Perhaps you accidentally "bought" the bundle early. Once you choose games, you "buy" the bundle and can no longer pause. Also if you intentionally buy the bundle to take advantage of some special offer, including a yearly subscription offer, well you've bought for this month and you can't pause. Some people have had luck asking Humble to let them pause in these circumstances but it doesn't always work.

In the past under Humble Monthly it was a partial gamble. They had one or more games they would announce at the beginning but the rest were a loot box and you didn't know what was going to be in it until it was announced.

It's possible some of the special offers mean they force you to buy early but I've never hard of it just that with some of the special offers are invalidated if you pause. I.E. You can still pause but you no longer get the offer price in the future. Well that is until they offer it again which they always seem to do :-p

P.S. By no gamble I mean you know what the games are before buying the specific bundle. Of course if you choose a yearly subscription perhaps you'll hate the games for the next 5 years and while you can pause every month it was probably a mistake to buy it for a year.

        • It's been a while since I've been billed, but I think what Nil Einne says is accurate. You've got the best part of the month to decide if you want that month's announced games. If you do nothing, they'll charge you. If you pause (and make sure you click all the pause 'options',) you don't get charged that month

Been sticking with the humble monthly for a while…every month I am disappointed - not sure why I even bother anymore when amazon prime offers great games and epic just give them away for free!

      ^ this

Prime gaming has been absolutely (profanity) crushing it recently

    • +2

not sure why I even bother anymore when amazon prime offers great games and epic just give them away for free!

Because most people still want Steam keys.

      • +4

I must be one of those strange people who just dont care what key i get (Uplay/Steam/Epic/Origin). if its free thats the right price for me

  • Garbage has became the norm with humble nowadays. I'm ready to cancel, I've been saying I'll pause another month because they might get their stuff together again but it's just rinse and repeat.

  • Havent seen a decent bundle since Call of Duty:WWII

Ive just been going through my humble order, and i bourght 12 months of the classic plan (before they switched over to 'choice' at the special price) back in october of 2019, and i still have 4 months left.

    • Hahaha, yeah, I have 3 months left now - I unpaused for this month. Even though I know that Iron Harvest is on Gamepass, and that Mafia will definitely be now in the next few months, this is still the best bundle for me they've had in awhile so I figured I might as well grab it. I won't be renewing once I eventually get through my 3 remaining months of credit in 2038 though.

  • I only return to Choice when they offer it to me (yes, it's targeted) for AUD $8 for all 12 games.

  • For under $2 a game it's a lot better than some other gaming purchases I have made in my life.

This month was 8/10 for me.. Gave the other 2 I already had away make someone else happy.

  • +1

I wonder if people pay for this each month but don't get the XBox Ultimate Pass? It seems like so much better value to get the Microsoft option first.

  • don't like how (since IGN takeover?) you can't lower the custom amount given to the site. Do they really need such a big cut?

  • im just frustrated i forgot to cancel my 6 month $6US deal last month and got charged $30 for bloody Maneater. No more HC for me
