      It sucks.

    • +5

Last three deals have a lot of testimonials (and puns) about how it's pretty damn good and can hold a lot of water. Looks like it's been about $5 cheaper, but I'm going to buy one now because I'll probably forget later.

Found it leaves a ton of fluff on both glass and the bodywork.
Tried washing and drying it out a few times but still no difference.

Curious if others had the same experience since they seem to be so popular?

      • -1

        Same here
        Better to go with chamois

      • +3

Initially I had this issue but after two wash it went away.

        • Can you just throw it in the washing machine, or hand wash only?

      • +2

Yes similar experience. I have four of these and last two had the same issue. Looking closely new ones look different quality.

      • Have the exact same issue. Kinda wishing I just bought a chamois

      • +1

Yep, same happened to me but as others have mentioned, it stops after a wash or two.

      • Never had this issue, but I do use their Microfibre Wash and dry my cloths in the dryer. In theory the dryer would remove any lint, however there is never anything in the lint catcher.

Wait for a 30-35% off sale though.

      • +1

I use the Mothers Premium Towel and have never had an issue.

As for washing, wash on gentle cycle using sensitive detergent (like baby clothes detergent). Then air dry with NO HEAT in dryer for 30mins to fluff it back up again and then dry it out on the line. Don't use heat in the dryer as that will ruin it.

    • I've got 1 of these. I can dry the whole car without having to squeeze any water out of the cloth

In case it wasn’t clear in the title.

Best towel I've used for a quick clean up. It isn't as streak free as a basic chamois, but in comparison it'll save a lot more time (no need to wring the towel at all. Can easily absorb the post-wash water on a large SUV without any wringing).

Kmart also has a cheaper alternative, which I've found to be slightly less efficient and less durable than Bowden's, but well worth the price:

    • THANK YOU! Not aware that K-mart sold this stuff. I'll have a look at some of their other gear

      • We bought two of the Kmart ones and they work great to dry our whole SUV

    • Thanks for the Kmart review. I'll try their one given the price.

    • Agree/Confirm, my K-Mart drying towel is great for the mid size SUV

    • Yes, maybe similar to double thickness, Sedona branded, green/grey microfibre towels going for about $5 at discount shops (Cheap as Chips in SA).

Couldn't resist the opportunity to compare, so I grabbed Bowdens for $20 recently. While the Sedona towel is not quite as big as Bowdens, sew 2 together and save $30 on the Bowdens (usually $40). Better still, the colours match - no one will know :)

    • The Kmart one, says 'do not tumble dry'…?

      • Just chuck it up on your clothes line?

  • +2

Used it - not had the issue of lint on bodywork or windows. Great towel and would higjly recommend!!

    • +4

      What about highly?

      • +3

        Yes - thagt too….

  • I used these, I actually totally hate it. Prefer a different blend for the microfiber, where waffleweave is probably the easiest.

  • I just use a microfibre cloth which works completely fine (I've found them much better than a chamy). Not sure I would see any benefit in this. Any opinions?

    • I used to do the same and would need about 3 large microfibre towels to dry the car (for scale, I drive a mid size SUV). With this sucky boy, I can do the entire car in one go in addition to most of my missus' car (small hatchback) without swapping towels.

  • +1

Had two of these and at first were great but then started linting and leaving streaks. Cleaned them with microfiber wash separate from all the other cloths.
Went with the Chemical Guys Woolly Mammoth instead. Larger and quality feels a lot better.

    • Which is currently 10 bucks off to 40 bucks from SCA as well.

  • This one really sucks! I notice on my first use, a bit of the green fiber got stuck to the car, but easy clean anyway.

  • +2

    Great product.
BUT: Wash before first use & after each use, and also use with Bowdens Own Boss Gloss for best results.

  • My one leaves lots of lint. Honestly the big softie does a better job.

  • Never left any lint on mine. Few sprays of Boss Gloss as drying aid and no streaks or anything. I used to use the chamois religiously, but really the towel is so much better (whether it's the Bowden's or other brands).

  • After trying The Chemical Guys Wooly Mammoth (also available at SCA) I wouldn't go back to Bowdens Big Green sucker.

Use with Boss Gloss to aid drying and as a lubricant to reduce micro scratches

When washing, make sure you wipe out any excess lint from washing machine/dryer and use a dedicated microfibre wash

    • What did you like about the Woolly Mammoth over the Big Green Sucker?

I've been using the BGS but find it starts to leave streaks when I'm about 3/4 through drying

      • +1

Both of similar quality but The Wooly Mammoth is huge - allows you to drape it over the car and dry in big sections
I find i need two BGS or I get streaking like you described once it gets a bit saturated

        • Wooly Mammoth on special at SCA at the moment

  • I just use a blower and drag cloths over the paint as little as possible. This holds a bit of water but sheds lint.

    • I've been wanting to so this too. Do you use an actual leaf blower or have got a specific car drying blower?

      • +1

I just use a leaf blower, i have a black car i bought new plus a classic car with original paint and find the less you have to contact the paint and rub cloths on them the better.

        • I have a leaf blower but recently also bought a Big Boi Jnr car blower from Repco. I can honestly say the Big Boi is much more efficient. It has a smaller nozzle, so you can really get in between bootlids, bonnets, door mirrors etc. Well worth the $99. I then use the BGS to wipe any thing leftover.

          • @nafe: It really depends on your leaf blower, i have an 80cc backpack blower that will push bricks along cement. Plus i have an 18v Makita with a small nozzle.

The Makita is ok for doing smaller places, but isn't the greatest doing larger panels. The backpack blower can knock the water off the cars in seconds, but i tend to not use full throttle to prevent forcing water in to places it shouldn't be.

I've heard a few people like the Big Boi blower, so it's a good option for a car specific blower.

  • Love this, have 3 at home! Good price aswell, well worth it. I use cheaper towels to do my door jams, under the bonnet, in the boot and my wheels.

Like their product range and use the Bowdens stuff every wash, with the exception of the wheels… I use armorall gold carwash, leaves a mint smooth shine.

Also saw a few comments complaining of lint, make sure you was the towel before first use!! Made the same mistake the first time :)

  • The Meguiar's Ultimate Wash & Wax 1.42L $18.99 is also a great deal with club specials.

  • +1

I have 3 big green sucker towels. Works incredibly well and it’s true that it doesn’t need wringing out for the drying of standard sized vehicles.

Haven’t had the lint issue, but it’s important to follow the instructions and wash it before use. Then wash it on a gentle cycle each time you’ve used it.

Great product. As others mentioned, coupled with Bowden’s Gloss Boss, it’s even better.

    • What's the Gloss Boss do exactly? I gave really hard water where I live and water stains everywhere

  • Works amazing especially when used as per the directions on the Bowden's Own website.

  • +2

    I have two of these.
They go into the wash with my other microfibers and mits at the end of washing our cars every weekend.
    - Cold wash
    - Spinnfast as possible to dry out as much as possible
    - Little bit of dish washing liquid for cleaning. (ive found it works just as well as microfibre wash without the ridiculous cost)
Have done this for years without issue, no streaking and the sucking/soak power is like new. When I notice one of em is leaving some lint, next wash I chuck all the cloths in the dryer for an hour, fluffs em up and they are excellent again.

Also I picked up one of these Mother's towels last time I was in store.
    https://www.supercheapauto.com.au/p/mothers-mothers-microfib…

It's as good as the Bowdens, but left a tonne of lint until it was washed and put through the dryer twice.

  • Works better than a chamois.

I can dry a medium suv without any trouble in 5 minutes.

  • Incredible clothes. 10/10. Been doing detailing for nearly 10 years.

  • Using the BGS just about every week after washing my car I find that after about 1 year it is starting to get a bit ratty and not as absorbent, and it needs replacing.

Pretty good value if you buy when on special and keep one as a spare.

    • Are you washing it properly? Are you making sure the car is clean before you dry? Have had mine for a few years now and it's still good.
