These aren't fun to use when writing a lot, but if recording some math or chemistry results are equations, they are decent. They write quite thin and aren't very dark, so for anyone with bad vision, you may wish to consider something else. Applying any real pressure to these will quickly snap the graphite.

yeah hb won't be dark. best bet to find 2b or darker 0.7 leads

100%. I purchased darker "leads" and then also purchased a separate eraser (as the ones of the pens go quickly with extra rubbing). My eyesight is declining, and I made a pretty bad lab error (just expensive), because I couldn't read the light writing, hence just pointing it out. At just over $1 for the plastic pen (even if you don't use the "leads"), it's still worth it. Much nicer to hold than the old school pencils and suits me with occasional use (I'm sure people that use these daily would have a premium option).

Pilot Frixions are also a great alternative to these if you want more of a pen that can be easily rubbed out. Sadly, it's cheaper to replace the entire pen than buy refills. They should be around $1.85 at OW also (I have a 406 error and cannot access their website. Many Colours from Amazon, starting at $1.85. These are great for situations where they consider your university work as a legal log (Like Chemistry Practical Book). I hate crossing shit out and signing my name next to it, so these look like pens, but can be erased.

Sorry I added a lot of info as others are likely to read and Frixions are something worth considering

i was a collector of mechanical pencils when i was a kid (sadly, only the "newsagent" variety…nothing fancy like rotrings). most of them were only available as 0.5s; i would buy 0.7's and even the unicorn 1mms without even thinking. also bought a whole bunch of leads in various sizes and darknesses.

not so much of a stationery geek these days since i don't write as much, but yeah, it's sad that it's now cheaper to replace the whole damn thing than to get refills. i remember asking a newsagent if they sold replacement erasers for the papermate "eracer"…was met with a puzzled look before they checked with their manager and yes, they did sell them after all. refill was only $1.50 or so compared with $4 for a new unit, so obviously any money-savvy kid with limited pocket money was going to buy the refill ;)

  • How does this compare to Rotring?

    • Rotring is slightly smother feel.
      These are lighter.

    • Definitely, not as fancy ;)

These are also available at the same price from Amazon (free prime shipping).

+1 to Pharmacy's comments. I use Kuru Toga mechanical pencils for work, but keep a heap of these in the desk drawer and around the house so there's always something around when I need it.
