  • Is this better than Arctic Silver 5?

    • Quick google says so.

I would recommend the MX-4. No cure time, non conductive, and slightly (<2C) better performing.

    • different company and yes.

  • +1

This ensures you put the correct amount of thermal paste.

    • ? what ensures the correct amount?

      • +10

Half the tube should be enough.

        • +1

it depend on the die size. ie. if I were to apply to a mobile phone CPU it would still be too much. of I were applying to a rack server CPU it would not be enough.

        • +5

half tube on each side of the CPU

          • +2

@BargainKen: It works best if you liberally apply on the socket first

            • @100001: you guys are so going to cause some grief…. LOL

            • @100001: Nah, this is hopeless for that - use liquid metal instead.

  • good reminder just used up the last of my noctua paste and always good to have some around

  • I swear this was $6 recently, might have been the non-2019 version. Any major differences?

    • +4

      That was 4 grams.

      • yes, $6-7/4g tube was pretty ok price. got a tube, performance seems OK, no complaint at all after 2 years on R 2600

  • +1

Cannot add to cart so I assume OOS

  • +1

Think its OOS, lowest price is $18.99

  • what's the use of it ?

    • +4

Transfers heat from a cpu or gpu, to a heat sink

    • +6

If you have to ask you don't need it.

      • +1

Ironically you might not know that you need it, so many old laptops with super crusted thermal paste running at a chill 70 degrees idle :'(

        • Yes, maybe should have said: If you have to ask you you can't use it.

    • +1

you jab it in your arm

  • This or the Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut?

    • +2

      kryonaut is better

    • Kryonaut is also multiples of times more expensive than this. If you are only after thermal conductivity then Kryonaut hands down, great if you are using top end (or bottom end) CPUs, GPUs etc. that runs hot.

If you are using an average computer or laptop…MX4 is plenty good enough. It is also safer as it is not conductive, so won't cause issues if you make mistake applying it, where as I think Kryonaut is conductive so u would need to be more careful.

      • +1

Kryonaut is non-conductive too. It is the best in terms of performance, bar none. The cost argument against it makes absolutely no sense for personal use because it costs $9 for 1gram (which is cheaper than literally anything else PC related when building a system). The 1 gram is enough for TWO application, that's basically 4 years if you change thermal paste once every 2 years. For personal use, it is absolutely ridiculous to hear the cost argument when they sell it in 1gram. It was argument made by PC builders, because they want to cut saving (which absolutely makes sense for them) but they passed it down to the users as if it's the holy word.

Sorry for the heated tone of the comment, it is not directed at you personally, I just see it a lot every time Kryonaut is brought up when people easily spend $2000+ on PC's these days and then don't want to pay $9 for the best thermal paste in the market.

        • +1

no offense taken mate. completely agree. It makes sense if you have spent hundreds and thousands on a new PC, to use something that is suitable for it's purpose, giving the other parts the best chance at returning the best value possible.

it depends on the usage scenario, for me, I use them to replace my entry-mid tier laptop paste after first year on all home computers, so I just need average grade stuff.

thanks for input Kryonaut is also non-conductive.

    • kryonaut is said to need repasting more often. One of mine was due as it started to creep up but I no longer do heavy cpu work on it and never bothered to check. Noticed it at 6 months, CBF repasting so just dropped my all core to 4.8 from 5.

Thought it was just because of summer so when winter rolled around loaded my old bios profile and kept getting random BSOD so put back the 4.8 bios

Note, this was pinned at 80+ deg for 8-16 hours a day so you might need to repaste more/less/same.

  • +1

worth replacing the thermal compound and pads on your gpu, i just swapped out fresh ones on my msi 3090 and the temps dropped by about 10-15c under full synthetic load, much lower fan speed and sound

    • What was load before and after?

      • +1

on stock pads and compound i was getting around mid-high 70s, now im sitting at around the 66-68 mark depending on ambient temp

  • Used this on my PS3 after a delid, it's cool and almost silent now.

    • +1

      You've got balls of steel.

      • +3

It's a ps3, they're probably worth about as much as a tube of mx4 these days.

    • What did you use to delid it?

  • +1

Sold out? Showing $18.99 for me

  • +2

Does this work on Omicron or do I have to wait for the next booster?

    • +3

If injected this will definitely kill omicron… and the host.

  • +1

I like it when OzB teaches me something - have never heard of this product

  • Just make your own, much cheaper! Better performance.

  • Only required after 3 years of non stop usage.

    • +2

      There's heaps of other scenarios.

Like if you are building a new system…at 0 minutes of usage.

or if you remove/replace the heatsink on any part, you should replace it as squishing previously applied goo together will most likely sandwich air bubbles.

or if you buy 'value' parts that it would be peace of mind to replace with something you DIY.

      or if you mod stuff…

  • Shin etsu is the best among thermal pastes

    • +4

and … you do know that stuff is multiple of multiples more expensive than MX-4.

      2.5g for $25
      8g for $10
      on Amazon prices.

This statement is like going to a Toyota dealer and tell the salesman, but a Ferrari is a faster car.

      • Haha😂
        Just sharing my info

        • yeah, I know, please don't take offense to my comment too. I am an entry to average tier computer user, so this high end stuff makes no sense to me.

if I was building a top spec pc, then yes go for better compound m

  • I thought it was another Parker pen post

  • Nerd heaven right here…use Hair wax or toothpaste

  • Oooh this was a better deal than the 4g for $6 I paid a few weeks back
